And everything is rusty because it is supposed to be a derelict station orbiting saturn/jupiter that has been left alone for probably a couple of hundred years. According to Wikipedia, rust is caused by a combination of oxygen and water. Presuming that the life support systems have failed since the station was abandoned, any air left on the ship would've escaped into space over hundreds of years and not been replenished. In addition, the temperature would fall to ambient space level, which would cause water to immediately sublimate into vapor and eventually work its way out of the ship though the presumable hull breaches that would've appeared in hundreds of years with no maintenance. I'm not trying to shoot your ideas down - I'm really just speculating - but it doesn't make sense to me.

I will probably leave the excuse as something like 'The Life-support system has malfunctioned since its abandonment, causing excess oxygen to get released, hence the rust.' When it is just an excuse to not have to make masses of new assets. Have you seen the E.Y.E assets? literally everything is rusty.

Not a big issue of course if it's not a map with a lot of scripting but if you are mapping for something like TF2 where you already know a good portion of your ent data is going to things just to make the map work for a game mode you need to be careful adding things like this. For a while when I did have some models that needed doing, I was just building them in the 2013 sdk and then loading and compiling them in the broken 2007 hammer.

Maybe get a little more ambient/reflected light going on just to make the mostly unlit areas a bit brighter?
