Brutalist architecture is fine when used in moderation; it gets boring and overwhelming and depressing and Communist when you have to look at it every day (source: living in Poland for 12 years).
We need soviet themed rp map with only brutalist architechture. Inspiration:

Russia, where the main export is bleakness and apathy. I really do enjoy the idea of brutalism from a functionality / durability standpoint, but obviously the monolithic pillars of concrete aren't the most welcoming or friendly symbols. I don't think anyone would want to actually live in a decaying urban concrete catacomb... but the rustic and depressing atmosphere of vast windowless expanses of concrete do have a certain dark appeal for sinister motifs.
Looks great and very utilitarian, actually. Very Soviet, no fancy postmodern BS.
What are you talking about? Brutalism is all about turning raw concrete into beauty. It was it's own, unique charm. Whereas other styles strive to be refined ladies, brutalism wants to transmit power and strength. [t]http://solucionista.es/wp-content/uploads/Torres-Blancas-1987.jpg[/t] ...the "Pentagonito", the headquarters of the Peruvian military and the Torres Blancas, in Madrid. Really, there's lots of inspiration in brutalism. It doesn't wants to be pretty and shiny, it wants to be strong and last centuries. Pretty cool. [editline]March[/editline] Shit. I got carried away. Sorry. I'll edit this to make it more readable.
Thanks for that. I think I'm going to make something similar to Torres Blancas as a skybox building. I really like the circles at the base of the tower for some reason.
I was a bit bored and decided to mess around trying to get some sort of nice design. [t]http://i.imgur.com/kv4bbgw.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/rF2LgmY.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/I071ynr.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/62zYrRq.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/m7vPxk6.jpg[/t]

But I'd totally love to live in a decaying urban concrete catacomb. [editline]31st March 2014[/editline]
We need soviet themed rp map with only brutalist architechture. And given your track record, if you personally took on this aesthetic and atmosphere for a future project, I would spend hours playing it. [editline]31st March 2014[/editline] The level of exposure and contrast from the camera when he walks in the door and only the orange light is illuminating the stairs and doorway is just perfect.

major overhaul on the city center [t]http://i.imgur.com/armKXAR.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/iW0fApI.jpg[/t] don't know what i was thinking originally with that crossing
I made a Japanese-style railroad viaduct or whatever-you-wanna-call-it [t]http://cloud-4.steampowered.com/ugc/795190793288731202/A7E7E272365AC6350ADE405A8129A7665138B909/[/t] [t]http://cloud-3.steampowered.com/ugc/795190793288733980/886CE69784A0E869805F737826A028C0FD9A4C3E/[/t]

I can't find the Sprop track models anywhere so I can't use them to make my life easier when mapping. That, and there's only one radius, so I can only really make one set of tracks because there's only one radius of curve. And no track switches. RIP

Starting to model all my assets for a big map project. Very very early WIP but i'm liking how it's looking so far.
All this brutalist talk gave me a great idea for a map, I'll try to make something quick and post some screens of it soon :o

I'm working on a middle-eastern themed rp_downtown, with lots of architecture modification and new additions to the map. Heres my progress: [IMG_THUMB]http://cloud-4.steampowered.com/ugc/3296940386213985887/AE2A5A9C9917D83A1CC072ED190833FD5E29B727/[/IMG_THUMB] [IMG_THUMB]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/3296940386274586892/41EA6485EA18B01EA420D2E99745AB22A5B842AD/[/IMG_THUMB] [IMG_THUMB]http://cloud-4.steampowered.com/ugc/3296940386274364192/C409B83884635FA8A1B45F3B7D3E83EEFBC0A0FB/[/IMG_THUMB] [IMG_THUMB]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/3296940386274909358/15B731984C1CE3DC4D38D6CE0090B4B5294EF929/[/IMG_THUMB] There's a built in day/night cycle courtesy of Apoc -- http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=142474598 At night time the street lights will trigger on and I've also set it up to play Islamic calls to prayers over the loudspeakers during certain times of the day.
So if someone faithfully recreated this building in Source you wouldn't be impressed? I wouldn't want to live next to it in real life but designing maps based on real architectural references will usually give better results than just creating a generic modern buildings from imagination or memory.
That would look badass in a game engine but In source I think it would look horrible.
I'm working on a middle-eastern themed rp_downtown, with lots of architecture modification and new additions to the map.
Third screenshot down looks nice. Other than that its all retextures and limited input.
Lua_run in Hammer that checks player's SteamID, and if it matches, opens the door!
Nice had to use a script for the same thing in CSS because it doesnt have lua. Had a VIP room with laser guns and flamethrowers etc. Was sweet.
Those tracks are actually entirely made of brushes, btw. If I actually use them I'll probably use Propper with them.
If it's possible, please be nice and create at least two types of curves, inner and outer. I know the source engine has its limits, but when theres only one type of radius, it is extremely frustrating because we can't use it to save brush spaces. If you want suggestions on types of tracks to make, I would suggest the basics for now; straight (which you've made), two radius of curve, and a left and right hand switch. If you want to go further than that, you can try all types of curves you see nowadays; X curves, 3-way switches, curves that raise upwards slowly, etc.
Something irks me about that curved road. Other than that; I really like the podunk, country style houses. White trash lmao
Probably because there's no curve to be seen, that's a few edges if my eyes don't deceive me.

If it's gmod you don't even need that room, give yourself admin and a way to run lua via a lua trigger and the server/clients are basically yours. Now that I think of the gmod community, it's probably in every popular map already.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/tUD3nq8.jpg[/t] wip hotel revamp are roof windows supposed to look like this?
are roof windows supposed to look like this?
I like how they look, most maps seems to give little attention to making different roof shapes or using them in interesting ways, even this demonstrates a lot of variance that you can do with rooves: [T]http://www.kitchenproject.com/german/recipes/Fasching/Schneeballen/rothenburg-skyline-rothenburg-ob-der-tauber-germany+1152_12814459498-tpfil02aw-8166.jpg[/T] Also, what's with that citizen head watermark in all of your screenshots? It kind of unsettles and distracts me every time I see it just floating there.
