The ~Official~ Facepunch Map Pimpage/WIP Thread V15

I was working on a block of main street buildings for a few hours today before I headed out to do fathers day stuff (happy fathers day everyone). I still gotta add more detail to the stores, roofs and do something about the store on the left because after looking at it some more, it looks pretty revolting.

This might be a silly question but I'd really like to start wasting my time mapping some stuff for old time's sake but I completely forgot both my steam account and respective associated email so...what game would you guys recommend me to acquire in order to have access to some decent enough content??? (props/materials/that sort of stuff)
From what I've seen so far I got my eyes on CS:GO but I'd appreciate the opinion from someone that's been around for more then 15 minutes :v:

CSGO doesn't have a lot of content packaged with it. I would get the Orange Box bundle, the summer sale starts on the 19th so I would get it then.

My buddy got me into CS:GO and I can't complain. It's got a lot of good assets, but then again, it all depends on what you're trying to do. Most of what I do is somewhat lifelike but if you want something cartoonish, maybe TF2 has what you're looking for or something along those lines.

I've always used hl2+eps and cs:s content, plus a buttload of custom textures and proppered models. hl2 textures can get boring, but there's a decent enough variety for most map types. Also, the PhilipK. texture packs are pretty good for space-y and miscellaneous applications.
The question megathread might have more ideas.

Brilliant idea man, that just might solve my problem and save me some euros :) and in the meantime I suppose if Team Fortress is still free I could grab it just for practice if I'm able to use it's content with Hammer that is.

SDK 2013 Singleplayer and Multiplayer are free in the tools section of steam and to my knowledge get you access to all HL2 content including the expansions even if you don't own the games.
Alien Swarm is also free and has a lot of stuff in it, just requires some tweaking to get it working in other games.
Portal while a fun game doesn't come with much content and I really can't think of anyone that still plays Portal 1 so mapping for that is kind of pointless.
HL2 is a fun game to play but like I said the free stuff comes with all the content.
Day of Defeat has some nice WW2 props and textures.
Portal 2, L4D2, and CSGO are on different engine branches then Gmod so their content needs tweaking like Alien Swarm to get it working on the older branch.
EYE Divine Cybermancy has some great cyberpunk stuff.
Postal 3 is worth getting when it goes on a deep discount just for the props and textures. Just don't play the game.
If you want most content to use with Gmod CSS is probably the best way to go as every gamemode basically makes use of that.
Edit: Also CSGO is a ton of fun the only issue I take with it is that the community run servers are not very present since the majority of players just click Find Game to get placed in a Valve run server which of course means no one is running very many custom maps :(
Oh and I forgot TF2, that games free go get it now.
Wondering if any of you guys know where i can get some foliage models. ( that work with wind too )
I'm looking for trees, brushes, grass ( tall )
Anything that can make a nice forest look.
I'd like some winter foliage, if anyone know where I can find that, I'd like to know.
Started working again.
Sorry for the fullbright, I didn't have time to compile light properly

If you don't mind the copyright, I'm porting a bunch of Crysis 3 trees.

Kind've come to the conclusion that I'll never finish anything ever.
Still felt like messing about in Hammer:

Aside from the bits obviously intended to be Propper'd, that entire thing is 100% on-grid.

I would kill for some nice trees. Please do share them.

Crysis 3 had pretty lame foliage if you looked closely. I would highly suggest you do crysis 1 trees. They are far better optimized and look better (especially in the source engine.)
How do I know this? I ported a couple of them but I couldn't be bothered to actually make a propper release.
An odd name for a 7/11-esque store, but it's just a placeholder until I get the texture I made ingame. It still needs a lot of details inside and next time I go to the local store, I'll see if there's anything I missed.

Well, here is the current state of my house I'm making. Complete noob so it's a bit tacky ;) Need to improve textures as well but thought I'd post it anyway! Going to try and finish a house as practice in Hammer then try something a bit more open. + everything is a bit blocky.
Ill eventually decorate the walls with picture frames / shelves etc. But any suggestions are welcome as I've just started!

Messing around, Sorry for the bad lighting, No Idea why it's like that.

I would uploaded more pictures of my progress on my l4d2 map, but I am having the hardest time designing a safe room at the end of the map that looks real. Its supposed to be a small room connected to the emergency exit in the flooded tunnel. The emergency exit leads to the small room and the small room leads to the outside surface. I cant find any photo references :l
Would places like that have No Trespassing signs and shit, or do they just not care if people go exploring
Those don't look like the a emergency exit for a modern city traffic tunnel, but I could be wrong :l

Sometimes they will. If it's not in plain sight, then you should be fine, but be wary. The land is almost always owned by someone, whether that be a private ownership or owned by the government of your state.
It's fun trying to copy architect like that in hammer editor though!

It's fun to be a masochist!
making a building based off one I walk past every day.

Shift some of the stair textures left and right a bit so they don't all line up like that.
And then flip a few horizontally.

still trying to make it look decent but i think it's coming along
also orange box rain is awful compared to l4d2's rain

So, I did something with the tower.
I'll refrain from posting again without compiling it.
The central area will have floors within it and a roof on it soon, I tried to design it as one would be built in reality, I wanted the external walls to feel like you were walking around within a stone structure and I want the inner area to feel like it's a timber structure. The two need to feel separate for it to be authentic.
Used surprisingly few brushes since Propper is godly, should have enough space in hammer for a nice big curtain wall and gatehouse.

See if you can find a way to break up that texture repetition. Either use less noisy textures or use lighting to help. I recommend a large detail texture.
You are thoroughly right to call me out on that. I was formerly using the concrete block textures that have the white trims on for doing corners which worked, but I wanted to flare the base of the towers and walls which made using them impossible. I don't have a single texture that's actually decent for what I'm doing, if this ever went to release I think I'd simply add decals such as ivy and such to the larger wall sections. It's possibly worth pointing out the entrance isn't much above ground level in relation to where the ground will be when it's done, so the lower areas which are the worst offenders will be minimised on 3 of the faces at least. Plus I can always add rock models there.
All that said, the thrill for me is the brushwork, everything past that is a chore causing me to quit and go make something else. I'll probably never finish it.
