Now, I'm not nearly as good of a mapper as most of the people in this thread, but I'd have to disagree with you. Yes, it's nice to see new, fresh textures. Yes, there have been thousands of awful maps made using the default textures. There are also many awful maps made with newer, custom textures. As long as the textures are appropriate for the area, and the geometry, lighting, detailing are done well, you can still get a beautiful, quality map using default textures, IMO.

Very atmospheric though.
Which SDK do you guys use? I want in on the mall map action but I can't tell whether to use the Portal 2 SDK, the Orangebox SDK, go buy CS:GO or what.

Speaking of which, any idea on when Valve is going to finish the damn conversions? I've wanted to map for Episode Two for a while now, but I can't fix it because there's no beta tab under Properties.

I'm sorry about this but I just have gotten sick of people throwing vast quantities of custom content around their maps for what seems to be no reason other than bragging rights. "Oh, there's already a bench prop? Well let's make a new one anyway LOL!", and the result can sometimes look out of place, especially if their own style doesn't fit with default content and they mix it with default content. I'm not saying this is always the case, as many of the users I see here produce actually good custom content, but there are a few times I just see people post maps with custom content in where it seems like it was thrown in just to impress people. If you want to use Mirror's Edge/Metro 2033 other game content, then I say fine because at least that is consistently good quality content. If you want trees that don't look like ass and have leaves on them fine. But there are some times where I think custom textures simply look ugly. Sorry for the rant, this has just been bothering me for a long time
(FYI You can opt out of steampipe ep2 and it fixes the config and keeps vpks because steampipe conversion doesn't delete gcfs)

Maybe beta opts are different? Yeah, this is why I did not opt into any beta. I want my stuff to work for as long as possible. And if everything goes public and things are is still not fixed, hopefully the Steampiping will not delete the main source engine gcfs so at least mods not mounted to HL2 can work.
