I believe Firegod has many good tutorials, they may not be under 5 minutes but they are pretty detailed and informative
I agree that there are a plethora of amazing and detailed tutorials by users on Facepunch. However, the attention span of the average user is pretty small and they get bored and tend to skip through very important parts of the tutorial.
I *hate* video tutorials because of how lengthy and annoying they tend to be. Stupid intros, stupid intros to the tutorial, lengthy sections I don't care about... I'm really only looking for like one or two things when I'm looking at a tutorial so often times I prefer text to video - but in the event that I'm looking for a visual how-to (i.e. what in the world what menu are they talking about), the shorter and simpler the better.

Don't need voice-overs unless its entirely necessary. 5 second intro, 20 second explanation, 5 second end / show in game. You'll become youtube famous.
What happened to good old written tutorials? :(
Don't need voice-overs unless its entirely necessary.
Voice overs are pretty helpful.
Voice overs are pretty helpful.
So is text on the screen. Typically the video should be self explanatory, about the only thing that needs to be voiced or explained (text pop ups) are the shortcuts / key commands or why you should / shouldn't do a certain thing a certain way. It shouldn't have to be entirely narrated like Bastion.

[sub]other than you know who[/sub]
TopHATTwaffles are pretty short already, trying to stick to under 5 minutes might be cutting it close. But hey go for it, can never have enough tutorials [sub]assuming they aren't teaching bad habits and wrong information like a certain popular tutorial maker[/sub]
do not mention that name
do not mention that name
They're talking about 3kphillips not TopHatt.
Because one bad tutorial makes them all bad... I still don't get why everyone follows that mentality when it comes to 3kliks, and I bet a lot of the newer mappers that say that don't even know why.
I learned a ton of things from his tutorials when I was starting out, only a few of them show bad practices and it's easy to see what they are. But back to pimpage.

One of the corridors in my yacht map, there are some problems pretty visible. Such as the brushes around the windows and the purple reflection coming off from one of the certain textures but despite the flaws I think it looks nice and I'm sure it'll look much better once I fix them. I love the moving sky, is it a scrolling texture on a plane, or an actual sphere?

Some rounded corners in the walls and mirrors would be nice xD [editline]11th July 2013[/editline]
Hi there totay i will show you how to make a map in less than 1 minute. *create a cube brush, hollow it, add a prop in, a light and the player spawn* now compile and you are done [editline]11th July 2013[/editline] Texturing in the next tutorial
It's it, simple and fast. I think good tutorials must focus on the theme of the tutorial, sometimes the video is too long because they explain every single step, if making a brush, explain the brush tool, the texture tool, the hollow tool, how to open hammer, how to compile and time is going.. make it simple, short explaning, get the tools you're using for the tutorial theme, and make short explanations for them, think you're teaching someone who never made maps before.
[sub]hollow is bad[/sub]
[sub][sub]If you don't ungroup afterwards and/or use odd brush sizes[/sub][/sub]
Aw here it goes..

What's with all those freaked-out triangles? I love the moving sky, is it a scrolling texture on a plane, or an actual sphere?
The triangles are space pods that Earth shoots out with prisoners in them to the moon. The sky is produced by 6 different planes all with scrolling textures, they all have different scroll rates, scales, and a slightly different angle value which makes them look seamless/non-looped.

One minute or two are enough depending the complexity of the lesson.
[t]http://i.cubeupload.com/5bKKAv.jpg[/t] The models are bleeding and I think I am going to have a stroke if I don't take a break edit: uploaded the wrong picture, yeah I need a break.
That absolutely blows me away, kick ass job!
Got bored today so I spent a few hours making a nice canal scene.
