• What makes Modern Warfare 2 maps so "high detail" to some people compared to source maps?

Source is indoor, close cluttered environments. CryEngine is open spacey environments for huge explosions etc.
Also it`s supported by the best company in the world.
source isn't supported by bioware
To much fucking phong
source isn't supported by bioware
Bioware? Aren't they the ones that release shallow buggy games?
There is also a fair amount of post processing in MW2, much like we have colour correction on Source, but this applies to all maps. I'm sure when you disable the effects the maps look much, much worse. Oh and stick a CoD4 map in fullbright, it shows off just how nasty some of the textures really are without their reflections/ bumpmaps.
source isn't supported by bioware
Oh my god not this... Bioware has twice Valves employees. Yearly revenue: Bioware 14mil, Valve 70mil.
Id is bankrupt... They sold off Duke Nukem to Valve I think too. They are closing down shop this year I heard.
Wasn't it 3D Realms that closed anyway? They made some killer DOS games, Terminal Velocity for example
Oh my god not this... Bioware has twice Valves employees.
yet bioware still makes better games [editline]03:59PM[/editline] lol
No. Their cutscene animations also suck.
those don't suck. the only reason why valve makes so much money compared to other developers is because they have a monopoly over the digital distribution market. [editline]04:27PM[/editline] and that's not a good thing.
Bioware are awful and their games generally lack any immersiveness at all. For me atleast. I've never liked Modern Warfare that much and the maps aren't that impressive when you look at them properly, but I am biased.

[editline]04:27PM[/editline] and that's not a good thing.
Actually they don't. Direct to drive is still going strong, and it has forced valve to make steam far better than any of it's competitors. Now that it is superiour, they can continue to add features to steam that are useful, while keeping it easy to use. Valve has changed the way we see pc gaming, and moved it to a different medium. How is that a bad thing?
How the heck could Id or Bioware be better than Valve? They don`t have THE PURE AWSOMENESS THAT IS GABE NEWELL. :v:
those don't suck. the only reason why valve makes so much money compared to other developers is because they have a monopoly over the digital distribution market. [editline]04:27PM[/editline] and that's not a good thing.
I really doubt just because Valve has a monopoly over the Digital Distribution market doesn't mean they'll start to be dickheads because they rule that market.
looking at those two videos of biowares animations confuses me. how could someone be so deluded to think those are good?
those don't suck. the only reason why valve makes so much money compared to other developers is because they have a monopoly over the digital distribution market.
Oh and stick a CoD4 map in fullbright, it shows off just how nasty some of the textures really are without their reflections/ bumpmaps.
What a idiotic comment, any map in full bright is going to look bad, it is a known fact that current gen graphics rely heavily on normal maps produced by high poly meshes, mapped onto a lower base mesh that real time computations can handle. That is like saying "take all source engine models, and cut them in half and you'll see how shitty they look."
Post-processing and other effects.

Oh my god your retarded... What was HL2 called by almost every video game critic again (even Yahtzee)? "Best game of all-time". Bioware has a great engine, good ideas, shitty team. This is to the guy who thinks ME has good animations.
Isn`t any engine basically just brushes, models, post-processing effects, lighting, particles, and various other entities(enemies etc.) ? Isn`t any game just a certain combination of those things arranged into a wonderful mess of information that gets put on a computer or T.V. screen and is abstractly interpreted by your brain. Afterwards made into an input you you can move a mouse or hit certain keys in a succession in order to recieve more information that can be percieved as good or bad? EDIT: Also, I wish people would stop complaining about source so much. It has alot more good things going for it than bad. My avatar expresses what I think that some of the people on this thread are like. Lol, I bet you didn`t read all of that. :v:
Get off the internet. I'm pretty much exhausted of your blabbering and bold-faced text. At least try to act like you guys know what you are talking about. I speak about only what I have some decent understanding of, and I don't go outside that boundary. In-house game engines serve the company best. Sure, there are some that are more streamlined and some are designed with a certain type of game in mind. In my honest opinion, it's not always about the visual results that prove how great the engine is, it's the quality of the tools and ease of use that make that great game you dreamed about. Level designers of all kinds should really check out the GDC Expo 2010 videos, they give you great insight on what people think who are actually in the industry.
MW2 has better real-time lighting (like when you move from a light to dark area you can see clearly the shadow on the view model) and much more vivid bumpmapping.
I thought MW2 looked really good. The mix of great phong, animations, normal maps and post processing effects just made it look quite stunning. I mean, yeah, it might look awfully plain when studied, but at a glance it really does look pretty. It's not a great engine, but it does well to make it's game look quite cool. And the grass sprites.
Yea pretty much. One of the things they do to allow for more focus on that is they cut down on other animations. For example, after COD 3, players aren't seen holding their guns at their hips when they aren't aiming down their sights. They also have their hands placed in the same positions no matter what two handed weapon is in their hands. But as you said, you're not supposed to notice it because the game is tailored to be fast paced while Valve games are slower paced allowing for the player to just kind of look around at things. I also know a guy (in RL) who was a modeller for the Mechwarrior Living Legends mod for Crysis and he said that the devkit for CE2 was unbelieveably user friendly for an engine of such a high quality which is probably why Crytek has only given their SDKs out to a few people.

holy crap there's a LOT of Valve fanboyism going on in this thread anyway MW2 looks better because of the attention to detail and the nicely done color grading
Then you obviously haven't seen the good looking maps made for the source engine.
Add proper grass sprites to Source and phong map every single model / prop and you have MW2. (In a nutshell) Edit: The Irony because i was just making a good looking outdoor map and it just crashed.

However, it's a very fucking good thing for Consumers like you who have no understanding of how the games industry works. I quite enjoy having all of my games and friends in one place, constantly updated, with dev tools to boot. Going by your "argument", there would be games all over the place, from different platforms, different forms of DRM and patch versions. I suppose Valve do have bad pricing, what with the big sales every week, the cheap game bundles, free-weekends, gift passes etc. I guess you're right.
