Does that mean my 4 years experience with hammer was for nothing?
I still don't really get this. Do we have to have Alien Swarm to have/use the SDK update?

I don't think so

Wow, you are a great reader.
Fretta was great and all, but every update seems to break a roleplay script or gamemode out there. And like I mentioned previously, why can't he fix things such as that?
Well excuse Garry for fixing and adding things in Garrysmod to make better. I mean, god forbid Garry from fixing any future lua exploits. Or adding something new the GarrysMod that Lua coders couldn't do before.
Of course things are going to break when he update Garrysmod. Garry doesn;t have any control of what the Lua coders projects. They have to update it themsevles.
roleplay script
Maybe if the authors learnt how to code properly then their gamemodes wouldn't break.
Well, I think the main problem is Lua coders base their scripts off of Sandbox and when Sandbox is modified, it'd be ridiculous to assume it wouldn't break.

It's only ever shit rp gamemodes that break, like dark rp.
Dark RP to be fair is decently coded, or am I wrong? The newer ones at least. Unless... We're talking about edits?
Can't wait to ditch Hammer..
I like Hammer more than other editors, it just needs to be really updated.
I think a lot of you are missing the point here and assuming Hammer is being ditched. By the sounds of it though, they're only adding that tile-based editor strictly for easy creation of custom maps for Alien Swarm. Hammer will most likely still be completely usable for this same purpose and it's not like a tile-based editor will help much for making a Gmod map or something. It will be quite restrictive.
They haven't said anything about removing hammer. They've just told us there's a tile-based map generator which we can randomly generate maps with, and then take into hammer for tweaking.
The only thing I really care about is if the new effects will be available to modders.

And it'd also be nice if they fixed the SDK a bit.
Good, now if I could only figure out how to config hammer for the new css.

I don't want to go too off track in the thread, but yes, despite how much bad talk there is about DRP, the script is stable and pretty much never breaks.
Just in case people are still wondering, the SDK update (Source 2010) will only useful for Alien Swarm until modders decide to update their software builds to the new engine. I personally don't know why everyone is excited for the update more so than the game. Even the more appealing parts of the updated engine like dynamic lights are dumbed down. There is only cone shaped lights and the shadows don't look to wonderful when the light source is at a sharp angle. And like I've said before, they seem to be used sparsely so that only one dynamic light is typically visible, so I suspect that if you used more than 2 or 3 per room, it's going to lag like hell.
Something that some might have not noticed is the fact that they finally added that neat feature that changes the direction of shadow maps depending on a prop/characters position near a light source. It's not true dynamic shadow mapping but it certainly is much more believable than previously.
Of course we don't all the exact features till monday, but I hope their something good!
I cannot wait until this update, the maps will look a lot better now with the new shadows and all.
Is it just me, or does this feel like a mini milestone for source? :iiam:
Awesome stuff.
Is it just me or is this being overhyped?

A little. I'm excited to utilize some of the newer features soon, but Source needs to be updated more than this.

Its a separate SDK, so yes

This includes updates to the Source engine SDK and full Steamworks integration.
Yes, that obviously means that it's a different SDK.
Added proof
[editline]10:57AM[/editline]
its includes its own updated SDK, that does not mean the regular SDK will be updated
Modders can make their own configs seeing as the Source Code will be released.
They're basically just making a tool that generates a vmf/bsp.
JLea told me that there is indeed omni-directional lights in the Source engine update, according HL coders.

Need proof.
