Welcome to Map Review. From now on, this account will review mapping releases on Facepunch exclusively, no matter the mapper's skill, the map's use, significance or the amount of time and skill put in to it. This is an experiment. If you have any suggestions, please do state them, otherwise focus on the map in the original post instead of bringing attention to this account.
Comments
Many have attempted, few have succeeded, to port maps from older games into Source. This one is rather abstract as most of the maps ported are from Gold SRC, not something completely different such as this. Nonetheless, it is a very accurate port. The mapper paid very close attention to every aspect from the player scale to making sure it didn't look too new for Sonic Adventure. There really isn't much to criticize on the Source end. Am looking forward to a few more, preferably the same place in present time and Lost World.

Although you attempted to remake the fire sprites from the original, and it didn't go so well. As little a problem as it is, Source fire really stands out from the rest and taking an extra few days to perfect that would have been necessary. This is really all that was bugging, that and the short skybox.
I don’t know; I guess it’s a good idea although we don’t really know who you are, thus your words lack the weight of more established names. Most of the points raised seem valid enough though.
As for map criticism, in my opinion, the biggest problem with the torch sprites is their color. They are too yellowish compared to the original red color. I did try using the source fire sprites in place of the glows over the torches but it just didn’t look close enough to the original and it had a much more noticeable impact on performance than the glows did.
My biggest gripe with the map was the inability to get a denser smoke effect from the fire pits, (where I did in fact use source fire). It’s probably for the best; however, since increasing the particle density of the particle effects there would have again probably had a negative impact on performance.
The top of the sky is a bit low, something I intend to correct in future projects.
Also, out of curiousity, what level do you plan on porting next?
As for other projects, I’ve got some work done on the Emerald Altar and the Mystic Ruins Station area, but I might start something from scratch. Whenever I get around to it I’ll update the OP in the WIP thread with images of all the stuff we’ve been working on.
Oh, cool. Now we get you bugger every time we create a map. This will surely benefit the mapping section as a whole. Thank you for this. :sigh:
Telling someone how they can improve on their map, so horrible right?
Umbreon is currently working on the Egg Carrier. We’ll post more about the EC in the mapping section when we’re ready.
my reaction to this
