They arent loading :(
[editline]29th November 2010[/editline]
Wait I know why.
[editline]29th November 2010[/editline]
There we go.
make sure displacements are on grid and matching in size where they join, if they dont use your vertex tool to align accordingly then try to sew
never use 255 white. it gives no environment feel, even fluorescents arent 100% 255 white. maybe a blue tint or something
[QUOTE=343N;26379348]Anyone else?[/QUOTE]
<-
I'm going to bed now, I'll see you all tomorrow, and expecting some replies/helpers/ideas.
I live in Australia, so australian mappers are best, due to same timezones.
Add different tunnel systems, leading to different groups of housing sections, etc. Have an industrial district with a large warehouse and such. Add a sewer system, like some one said as well.
Yeah, I will once the main layout of the map is done.
[editline]30th November 2010[/editline]
But I don't want it too downtownish.
rural is a change of pace. most rp maps tend to be in some sort of town setting, guess country people dont have a rp setting lol
Light_Spot + Env_sprite is awesome.
[media]http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/9300/rpawesomecity0028.jpg[/media]
point_spotlight to give it the light ray effect
Maybe not for the houses.
While using Light_spot use Point_spotlight instead of Env_sprite if it's just a lamp.
Also I suggest you doing what I always do while making ground out of displacements, make one brush which is 256x256 (average) or 128x128 (best) then turn it into displacement and you'll get nice, small grid so displacements won't get so sharp and also sewing will be easier !
It'd be good for you also to tone down a bit light_Envirnoment, it's yellowish again :P
@Edit: Also for sew to work, there must be at least one part of grid that goes straight in line with other.
Like that: "- -" not like "- _"
whole ground displacements can post a seeming issue with non displaced ground sections. sometimes
I never get seeming issues, you never do if you do a good job.
me either but for someone who is new they might
ok i lied i have a seeming issue with a displacement around a tunnel entrance. though it looks aligned on the grid it still has a micro gap in it and i dont know what to do to fix it...
Make sure it's sewn, compile test in-game, you'll often find it may look like it has a gap in Hammer but in-game it will not, if the problem persists just fiddle with the displacement to sink it into the tunnel entrance, this has no effect on the map compile process at all.
the gap is in game but not in hammer lol
its a minor thing and you have to know where to look to find it
That's odd I usually get in-hammer gaps but not in-game.
This thread is more a tweet about the OPs life than a WIP thread.
I don't mean to be a douche, but could I suggest you approach this differently by scrapping your map, drawing a plan then making it in hammer. The beauty of that is it really helps you get an idea of what it will looks like.
For instance, I had an idea for a steampunk map, but after several failed attempts at it, I decided to draw a plan. It was an incredibly simple plan, dawn on some grid paper. I then remade it in hammer, in the top view. I made everything 512 units high, added a floor and it looks really good. I plan on detailing the streets a bit then copying each brush that represents a building and making a building with the dimensions of that brush.
It's a good method because you do each building individually so you don't feel bogged down the magnitude of the project and you can get an idea of what it will look like early on.

personally, I look at mapping as a form of art. If you can create a map with a certain emotional atmosphere, you certainly have a skill.
But another thing is, that I personally never plan a map. If I do, I raise my expectations sub-consiously and I am either disapoint with the outcome or get bored and scrap it. The beauty of making maps, In my opinion is improvising. Going with what you feel and what you see. Not to mention It makes the process alot more interesting if you don't have a clue what to build next. Gets you thinking creativly instead of ticking boxes on what you have done and have not done.
:v:
That is why I don't plan Dragon Master, on paper at least.

I totally agree with you, but I think you can plan a map without limiting yourself, like I have, by planning, but planning very loosely. All I've planned is the layout on paper, and as I was making it in hammer, I started improvising and building off of that, but my point is, if you're vague, but you still have an idea of what you're doing, you can have an idea of the magnitude of the project, an idea of what it will look like, but still have no real idea of what it will look like when it's done.
Of course, different things work for different people.
I had no choice but to draw out the track plan on paper but even that was changed from its original design. Then once again I had to write out functions and where they needed to be assigned to for the signals and switches on the map.
I think its a good idea to have some sort of basic plan before you start also its fun to wing it too in some parts.
The brain farts on what to build next has its counterpart too, Sometimes you have a ton of ideas of what to build but it won't all fit on the map and without it the map isnt right.
Is a map every really 100% complete though?
