Well Sega and EA are hardly good examples of developers who are in for the customers, not for the money - So it's obvious they want people who thought it'd help to be the best at things in school (when really it means fuck all to good developers like Valve who ask for no prior qualifications if you can show them you mean business.)
Those two are publishers, not developers. Developers like to have people with experience in testing, a smaller number of people to do targetted testing in specified areas. Having a C in maths and english at a gcse is a base level for most jobs, so it is hardly looking for the best. It is making sure that someone have the base knowledge to do addition and subtraction, and be able to write a bug.

Such as DICE and SEGA Games (or whatever they call it now.)
They both have subsidiary companies which handle internal development. Sega don't hire staff for the companies they own, all that is done on a devhouse level.

I've really been itching to make a series of tutorials for hammer. Firegod's tutorials are great, but I feel like an updated series of videos for people who are completely foreign to mapping are in order, and ones that actually teach some good habits. I didn't feel like this belonged in the mapping question section, thought it would be best posted here. What do you guys think I should include it in? (I have a list of some basics - will definitely any suggestions) My plan was to focus on mapping in general, and more explaining the whole theory of mapping.

If you want to get really good detail, here's how to layout the video: Explain the object Show how to use it Build/do something with it Show an out-of-tutorial example of it.
VertexLitGeneric { $baseTexture "models\props_foliage\Urban_Trees_barks01" $AlphaTest 1 $AlphaTestReference ".3" $nocull 1 $model 1 $FlashlightNoLambert 1 "%compilepassbullets" 1 $vertexfog 1 $treeSway 1 $treeSwayHeight 300 $treeSwayStartHeight ".5" $treeSwayRadius 200 $treeSwayStartRadius "0.0" $treeSwaySpeed ".2" $treeSwayStrength 10 $treeSwayScrumbleSpeed "1.2" $treeSwayScrumbleStrength 4 $treeSwayScrumbleFrequency 2 $treeSwayFalloffExp 2 $treeSwayScrumbleFalloffExp 3 $treeSwaySpeedHighWindMultiplier 0 $treeSwaySpeedLerpStart "200.0" $treeSwaySpeedLerpEnd "600.0" }
Found some things in cs:go for the trees to move about.

Just wanted to clear that up.

Where did the all pages from the releases section go? Nooo, my map dump is lost :tinfoil:
Where did the all pages from the releases section go? Nooo, my map dump is lost :tinfoil:
I just noticed that too. Are they cleaning up the forum or something?
Haha, oh man. I was able to restore my old drive that I thought failed long ago. Going through some of the files, I was able to locate all my shitty maps. Anyone remember this?
So uh, anyone wanna hire me?

Working both as a mapper on Conscript and working on my own Episode 2 Source project can be pretty fun at times. I like to have both the old and new Hammer on at the same time. I'll randomly switch between the old Hammer we use and source 2009. It gets to be a pretty interesting exercise to be like "Now it's time for simple stuff!, OK now it's time for complicated, now simple, now complicated again!" It sort of makes me more productive in a way.
Spent some time working on hand-made ssbumps, how do they look?

Dunno about you guys, but I find that maps which don't contain custom assets tend to look/feel incomplete. It's kind of why I expanded out beyond just mapping to learn the ways of texture and model creation. Very valuable skills, even for someone who maps as a hobby.

One of the reasons may be that I often find it easier to just make a custom model to detail up an area instead of trying for hours to do something with stock content that looks both nice AND hasn't been done in other maps countless of times before.
