• What do you hate the most about mapping?

I always hated rotating objects in hammer like 180 or something. every other editor has a function to select how many degrees you want to rotate by. but now i found out about the 15 degree rotate option in 2dview.
every other editor has a function to select how many degrees you want to rotate by.
So does Hammer. CTRL + M --> rotate
When you align a brush to grid and it randomly goes out of the grid for no reason. Also when displacements are at a certain shape to cause them to be 'Bad geometry' and make the map fail to load.
There isn't a lot that I don't like about working in Source and in Hammer. Probably the thing I dislike the most would be lining up textures on awkward brush faces. I have a bit of a OCD when it comes to things like that so I need to stop myself and tell myself "It is good enough, move on" If I really can't stop myself, I adjust brushwork to cover it haha. [t]http://i.imgur.com/LQAma.jpg[/t] lololol im hammer i can't handle cylinders Going to have to remake the cylinders and there's no guarantee that Hammer won't fuck up again.

That's how I made this: [t]http://puu.sh/DotC[/t]
When you keep compiling your maps and the actual map does not update to the newest compiled.
When you keep compiling your maps and the actual map does not update to the newest compiled.
Well, that'd be because of an error. Ah, the many errors of Hammer.
i fucking hate it when you accidently press the key combo that causes all of your fucking tied entities to reset back to its world state it's not a problem when you notice it just then but when you map for 30 minutes after doing it...
Are you talking about Ctrl + W? because when you change from group to object to solids it just shows that it's a brush and not an entity, all you have to do is switch back to group. Unless that really does revert to world, in that case that is horrible.
Texturing can suck my cock until the end of time. I hate texturing.
Texturing can suck my cock until the end of time. I hate texturing.
Yeah it is pretty hard but when you finally manage to do what you want it feels good. This is the hardest thing I ever textured: Using this texture: Took ages to align the brushes but I somehow managed to do it.
Detailing and lighting.
how props are shaded so horrible.
how props are shaded so horrible.
That isn't a mapping problem.
"oh this room is going to be so sweet after im done detailing" "FINISHED!" "now for the next room" "but in order to connect them, ill mess up all the func_details and world brushes and its going to be a horrible mess" "welp, into the garbage you go" and thats why i never geet any maps done
Things that really bug me are flickering overlays, that one glass texture that stretches everything out in the 3d view at certain angles, when there is so much shit on your map you think everything is off grid but it really isn't but it gives you ocd on the spot and you just want to fix it. Here's another thing, when your map file gets corrupted and all your entities get deleted and all you're left with is your brushwork :(, that happened to me today.
-Compiling&compile errors -Optimization -Hammer itself, bugs/flaws/crashes/errors -Vertex tool not saving vertex places properly -When you are willing to create something epic but source engine limits prevents it and you gotta redo it
Reading the Map Pimpage thread then getting depressed because your map doesn't compare.
When your map crash on game/Hammer load, and you dont have any type of error. The compile log, the check for problems, the con_log command, the VMF lines...everything apparently perfect. I wish there would be something to tell you what made the crash, instead of have to open the dump file with those complex methods. I had this problem once, and the problem was in a custom texture which used an obsolete parameter. It took me weeks discover the problem. And well, the time that takes check how it looks in game. Even with everything optimizated and compiled in fast, it takes me more of a minute.
Vertexes
Lack of Inspiration and Motivation
I do all brushwork in nodraw texture at first, looks pretty good. Start applying textures, and it looks more and more horrible for every texture I add.
I do all brushwork in nodraw texture at first, looks pretty good. Is it us, or the textures though?
-snip- That's how I made this: [t]http://puu.sh/DotC[/t]
Haha, thats a really good idea, using sketchup. Thanks for that, even though it was probably a no brainer. On topic: I hate having an inspiration, drawing out the map, then realizing I'm not that good at mapping to make my vision come true. But with practice makes perfect, right?

I really hate that bug that sometimes causes Hammer to crash when clicking the "Flags" tab on the properties of an object.
I really hate that bug that sometimes causes Hammer to crash when clicking the "Flags" tab on the properties of an object.
Used to happen to me all the time. Just close some useless programms or internet browser tabs.
Having task manager open at all times while mapping, cause vrad's taking up all of my 4 cores and grinding my pc to a total halt, while it performs the same on 1-2 cores. So the second I'm pressing compile I'm just waiting for this sonofabitch to show up in the processes tab and as it pops up I IMMEDIATELY RUSH to set affinity to only 2 cores or else time on my pc LITTERALLY FUCKING STOPS.
making a hole in a brush with a unusual angle.
