I'm getting Unexpected End of File errors with WinRAR (and the download isn't finishing all the way). What is this.
Sparta. Uploading a mirror to my site now. [editline]09:17PM[/editline]
I managed to download and extract the map successfully from black-brains.net, so the problem might be on your end. I'd advise checking your Internet connection. And for those who like 7z, and smaller downloads: http://www.black-brains.net/downloads/maps/rp_cityway_v1.7z Do NOT, repeat, do NOT copy and paste the link into your address bar. This will result in being led to the wrong page.
Sparta. Uploading a mirror to my site now.]
This worked perfectly for me. I'll get to uploading it to anyhub or luaduck.co.uk later.
Well to be brutally honest, everyone in the thread has offered constructive criticism. Yes it is version 1 - but how will the developer make a version 2 if he does not know what to improve? This is where this thread comes in. So please, don't think everyone is bashing his map by offering constructive criticism; they aren't, but they sure will help in fixing the bugs that this map has. This map is okay, but there are several things that could be improved: The mall. There is none. There is a small area next to a sign that says "mall" that has a shop next to it, but no actual mall. The mall is a locked door. Is this going to be present in v2? It looks that way, being as you advertised the mall with a large sign and made it look pretty damn attractive. The beach. It is much too small, and not deep enough. If you choose the right car, you can actually drive in it. I suggest importing the one from townsend, because I noticed that you have an invisible wall at one point in the water which is quite jarring if you swim (or crash) into it. Townsend had an actual wall of sorts. You could see why you were blocked from going further. Also, change the texture of the water back to what it was in townsend, because this one looks a wee bit too bright. The tunnels. I'm afraid I don't like them all that much. I mean, I like the tunnels being there, but I don't like the design of them. When you drive through them, you can see seams. Loads of little white flashes coming towards me. Creepy. The lighting in the tunnels isn't that good; there is one where the light from the light_environment is shining into the tunnel, but there is nowhere for it to come from. And try to make them a little more curved. They look like boxes to me. Some people also complained that they are too long. I am not so sure about that, but perhaps that is something to keep in mind. The hotel. While the rooms are nice and all, there is one that is unfinished. It's actually there, just noclip through the door that won't open and look. There is a ceiling and a floor. Please finish this. The lifts. They are quite annoying. The "DOOONG" sound they make every so often is rather pointless and irritating, as you can hear it from a long, long way away. Make the distance the sound travels much shorter and this problem can be avoided. And change the sound it makes. Perhaps the HL1 "PIING" noise? Many people on Black-Brains have voiced dissatisfaction at their automated and completely random nature. It's nice what you were trying to do, but it is better to just keep it simple. Have a lift with normal buttons, one at the top and one at the bottom to call the lift, and one inside to go up or down. Simples. *squeak* The train. Oh yes, it kicks a lot of ass. It is one of few maps that has a train that will take you anywhere you need to go, while giving you some of the best shots of the scenery there is. But it is flawed in some way. Firstly, it isn't frequent enough. It takes ages for it to arrive. The train needs to go faster. Or perhaps it could be split into two different services? You know, one for X destination and one for Y destination. I forget where the train actually goes, but I think one stop is next to the studios. I don't think there is a train station in the beach, so perhaps this could be implemented? The beach was one of the locations the players really wanted to get to, but couldn't. Also, you can phys the train. This isn't a major problem for my server, because only a select few have physguns (who really needs them in an RP server?), but for other servers, this may prove to be quite a large problem. Sometimes this can even cause GMod to crash. Make it unphysable. I very much anticipate a v2 of this map. You have proven yourself a talented mapper - townsend and cityway are testament to this - and with these bugs and niggles squashed, this could be the next evocity. Well, maybe not, but you get the idea. ;)
Only thing that you have missed is optimization. Not just me, but a few users on the server is getting crashes and lag. Another point, less lighting and bloom.. please :D
While I am yet to experience lag, we have had many users with computers with a wide range of specs crashing when players phys gun into the distance or spawn things.
Well, after flying around for a little while, you've done a fairly good job from what I can see. However, the trains need some serious tweaking. The tracks you've put down aren't smooth, causing them to flick around (sometimes clipping with fences, ETC) and looking down-right awkward. This isn't HL1. Also, you might want to adjust train acceleration / deceleration (it's a bit odd when a train flies into a platform, then stops dead and opens its doors) Other than that, the map's a great premise! I'll upload it to luaduck.co.uk (or anyhub if I don't have the space for it) overnight.
While I am yet to experience lag, we have had many users with computers with a wide range of specs crashing when players phys gun into the distance or spawn things.
Ahhhh. So that is the cause of the crashes. Mirror: http://rblfastdl.co.cc/garrysmod/maps/Rp_Cityway_V1.bsp.bz2
I don't like the map personally. The texturing in the houses is all wrong. He didn't block off a lot of the areas where it is easy to get under the map. He has no good decorations, no custom models, the elevators make loud bing sounds and it never ends. You don't choose what floor you want on the elevator. There is only 1 big building and it is really small, It has a small lobby and 2 super small rooms. Fences go through walls, the trains are slow. There are barely any buy-able doors in the town or anywhere to be exact. Oh and the suburbs he ripped straight from towns send. Take a look at the pictures I took, you can see how some of the texturing is wrong, also there is barely anything custom in this map it seems all he used where HL2 textures. Which in a nice RP map it's a bad thing. http://s285.photobucket.com/albums/ll49/CoBullet/RP_Cityway/
Ahhhh. So that is the cause of the crashes. Mirror: http://rblfastdl.co.cc/garrysmod/maps/Rp_Cityway_V1.bsp.bz2
Jesus fuck that is slow, 50 KB/s. I'm getting 950 KB/s from my site.
Jesus fuck that is slow, 50 KB/s. I'm getting 950 KB/s from my site.
I don't know if you are bragging or not.. Although you can differ on your speeds because of how far away you live.
I don't know if you are bragging or not.. Although you can differ on your speeds because of how far away you live.
Maybe a 100 KB/s is understandable, but 900 KB/s speed drop is disappointing. Also, if I wanted to brag, I would go home and try, considering I can get 3.7 MB/s there. IN OTHER NEWS, I just tested all of the downloads and they all have terrible speed, only FileFront is halfway decent.
Maybe a 100 KB/s is understandable, but 900 KB/s speed drop is disappointing. Judging by the .co.cc domain, it's a homehost webhost. IN OTHER NEWS, I just tested all of the downloads and they all have terrible speed, only FileFront is halfway decent.
The evidence suggests that locational differences are indeed causing the drop. I am getting speeds of around 100kb/s on your server, and 900kb/s on mine. Where are you located?
I figured I would test them, as I assume we are in entirely different parts of the world, so on my UK internet I got: http://rblfastdl.co.cc/ - 120kb/s http://www.lanterncorps.net - 80kb/s http://www.black-brains.net - 1.3mb/s This is obviously based on my location/internet and is not in any way relative to the performance of the different servers.
Broke my site earlier, still somewhat broken. Speed was terrible for me too. Can you guys try again?
I tried again and it is going at 60kb/s, but like you said it is in Texas.
Just under 50kb/s. Using Virgin Media cable broadband in the UK. Hopefully your problem will be resolved shortly.
I tried again and it is going at 60kb/s, but like you said it is in Texas.
What the hell could I have broken? I'll ask my host, they are epic. Fixed a PHP script for me last night (BROHOSTER IS FCKING WIN)
Ah I see, you are on a shared web host (right?). But the issue will probably lie in the distance from the server.
Ah I see, you are on a shared web host (right?). But the issue will probably lie in the distance from the server.
Yeah, for now atleast. Hoping to go VPS soon.
Right, as far as I know we are running a dedicated server (I know that bit) on a 100mb/s up/down line (that bit I am not to sure about). Though it is somewhere in the UK, so it will go a lot faster for people in Europe.
So now we have mirrors for people around the world! Yay!
Megaupload does not work but the other one's do.
Megaupload does not work but the other one's do.
Same. WOOT I've been official mirrorized!
A few suggestions: One is the performance. This is a horribly optimized map, no offense. If I can run maps like Bigcity and Atomic on my piece of shit computer with no problems then I should be able to run this without problems. The visleaf abuse makes this very clear. (I think it's visleaf, I don't know about mapping.) The teleporting elevators are annoying. You should make them activated on use. Also, there's this one elevator in this one tower that moves but I have no idea how to activate it. The train should hurt or kill you when it hits you. Just for fun. You should put a simple map in the spawn area. It's a rather large map and it is difficult to get around. Maybe you could make the water in the lake a bit deeper. Finally, a 3d Skybox would do this map justice. Otherwise, it is a very large and varied map that has a lot of potential. I could see it being one of the best if you spend some time on improving it.
Could someone please tell me what the requirements are, because my version of the map is a large pink-and-black mess.

I would use and play this map but because of that I won't. Also I can agree with most of the common complaints everyone has with the skybox, soundscapes, etc. Also would really like for the tram system to be faster. Other than that a great map.

O......m......g.....!
If the mirror 5 link goes dead for a minute (well the picture atleast), sorry, I'm messing with another new button image.
really nice, but few major glitches i'd like to point out. The walls come in the metro when moving, so they should be modified a littlebit. Also, When going to the doors in the train station, you teleport face to door, not other way around, which confuses me when walking through the doors.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
