I would probably be too focused on portal 2 to be mapping.
Let's start discussing what it will be though.
Train Depots, Secret Facilities?
My idea's suck, But yeah...
Abstract Design, do et.
Abstract Design, do et.
I could work with this, my teacher allowed me to use SSDK for an art exam :v:
Oh damn! I totally forgot about this. Is it too late to put my unfinished screenshots up?
[editline]sdf[/editline]
Judging by the dumb, yes.
Nevermind.
See people should totally let me do the competition, I can offer a $75 prize :3:
Abstract design is really stupid. Why not something cool like secret facilities?
Secret facilities are just as bad as admin rooms.
Secret facilities are just as bad as admin rooms.
Not really; there could me military bunkers and missile silos, arctic labs, government-run space mines, etc
I think we should do some kind of battlefield themed contest. With military bases and what not. Something that would actually be fun.
Where's my entry?

That is NOT, a real picture.
Fine, you caught me, it was.
On Topic:
I think MenteR kind of has this one in the bag. All of the others were great, especially that lava one, but MenteR had the whole idea planned perfectly.
I think we had a competition similar to that. It was like the hidden room competition I think.

Agreed, he's doing well in the polls. And I like what he's done, but my problem with it is it looks more like a cool picture rather than a cool map. It would have been my favourite had it been more than just one scenic view.
Secret facilities are just as bad as admin rooms.
Black mesa was an admin room?
If the next contest is some bullshit "Secret Facility" thing I refuse to enter it. That has to be the most generic theme ever.
I still think that the best themes are the ones that are open to interpretation. Like "Weather" or "Grand" or "Disaster" or something, which would produce wildly varying results.

Because the v3 bunkers look exactly the same as the portal test labs.

It's still extremely generic. The v3 bunker (from the video I've watched) is the perfect example of what would make a really boring theme for a map. The test labs from portal also aren't a good example because they aren't anything unique and creative (at least, not now they aren't) either.
Zombie apocalypse
v:v:v

The problem with the v3 bunker is that there isn't a lot left, as the americans bunker busted it before they knew what the germans were building. However, the essential idea is the same. There is an entire facility built under london that no one has filmed. Who knows what it looks like.
Next contest could be themed "out of this world".
secret facilities can mean a trillion things. secret cults on caves, colossal structures built by aliens, MIB-ish bases, etc etc. don't simply think secret facilities = bunkers/aperture science.
[editline]5th February 2011[/editline]
whatever the next contest is, i'll be joining it anyway. specially if it's about huge stuff or displacements. but i love the secret facility idea.
Forest (Using the source engine for what it does worst)
Survival (Make a playable survival map, a la L4D)
Other engine (Using a game engine other than source to make something)
Seaside (Get some fresh air after this underground thing)
Other game based (Model a map after a scene from one of your favorite games)
Other world (Somewhere other than earth)
Hell (Pretty self explanatory)
Displacement (Use displacements to form the bulk of your map)
Sci-Fi (Put that recent texture pack to use, the ones everyone is using in the Pimpage thread)
Half-Life 2 Redux (Redo an area from HL2. Citadel Ravenholm, etc)
Fancy (Do a ballroom or a nice restaurant)
Just some ideas.
My suggestions for next contest:
Medieval
Soviet stuff
Piratehaven
Wooden
Offshore
Hell or something out of this world (Or even the universe) would be nice.
Next contest should be either 20-brush challenge, or old-school deathmatch style.
Next contest should be either 20-brush challenge, or old-school deathmatch style.
20 brush challenege is horrible, the interlopers one wasn't pleasing to look at, it restricts creativity and looks like ass.
Just model everything then :v:
:golfclap:
Contests don't necessarily don't have to have themes to be good though. We could just do an open contest where people map whatever they want to. That should also yield better results, as it's more fun to map what you want to map, not what you have to.
If not, maybe an I/O-related contest.
I/o would be fun.
