Thread title.
I tend to map quite often without looking at reference pictures for rooms or buildings. I usually just let my imagination do the work, but I find that this makes it hard for me to complete certain areas. I usually get stuck with an unfinished hallway that I'm not sure what to do with. It causes me to drop the map completely and start on something new (a habit I should really break).
What about everyone else?
I have the same exact problem as you , Try drawing a overview or a picture of a level and it really should help you with that problem
all the time
and i stop after 15 minutes
im also bad at designing layouts
I really need to start sitting down with reference pictures and recreating them. I usually do the same as you, OP. I made part of a map, make it look nice then have no idea what to do next. I also need to break this bad habit.
I usually browse deviantart a bit (an hour sometimes) looking at pics for interesting stuff relevant to the map I plan to do then keep that in my mind and make stuff.
references are good for making things look detailed and authentic. Once ive created part of my map ill go and look at some references to see how i can imporve the scene
well 50/50. i've made a airstrip from sims castaway stories(covered in snow)
most of my maps are made from scratch
i dreamed one area some night, and in school i've redrawn the layout and back home started to work
Really depends on what I'm trying to make. I don't usually copy directly from references or try to recreate things, I usually just take a look to see what real things look like and see if I can blend my own version of it together.
Usually, i just imagine them without redrawing them, but sometime i just forget them when i'm mapping it
Oskutin does it for me.
I will sometimes sample shapes and colours, but other times will sample whole scenes. It always depends on what I am trying to make or do.
