the brick wall could be done the same way it is in that tutorial. For the beam though, you would probably need something like soft body physics. I believe maya has its own plugin for those kind of things, but I'm not too sure what its called.

Say I make a simple pillar with a brush, then I want to make copies of it, that will update if I modify the first.

Assuming you're using anything past source 2009/mp (as in l4d2, alienswarm, portal 2) you can create an instance.

I got another issue here, whenever I open up my map it says, "1 solid(s) were not loaded due to errors in the file. Would you like to Re-Save your map with the invalid solids removed?"
If I select no, it continues on loading my map and then at 94% hammer closes.
So my only option is yes... However last time a similar problem occurred when I selected yes all of my entities were deleted. Any suggestions on how to approach this situation?

So where does everyone pull models from now days? I've been seeing a lot of L4D1-2 and Portal 2 models, is there an actual patch for them in Hammer or are people just downloading them into GMod?
Are there any tutorials geared towards outside night-time maps? I'm really struggling to get the lighting to look any good :( Mapping for CS:GO by the way, if that makes any difference

GMod configs are pretty much useless, just map on HL2Ep2 or a different HL2 game.

I recommend ep2 personally, but i use a custom fgd with ep2

Try a grey-blue light for brightness (300-600 value) and a grey-green for the ambiance (70-120 value). You don't need to have a dark level to suggest night time; just use cold colors. If you want it to look really good, add some alternative light sources that emit warm colors, such as yellow or orange. That will create a noticeable contrast between the colors, which is why you should use those for highlighting the path or an important area.
Here's what I got with 300 brightness and 120 ambiance and a light_spot entity:

I can see a huge difference, and I know that the graphics for half life 2 and garry's mod is different or I would be using -dxlevel 90 on garry's mod as well, if it didn't break garry's mod's graphics.
Garrysmod and hl2 have the same "graphics"
They both run on source. hl2 uses source 2009 and garrysmod uses source mp which is basically the same style.
Switch garrysmod to -dxlevel 90 and you will be fine.

How would I make the map work on Garry's Mod while using other configurations? I got it to work in Half-Life 2: Episode 2 when running the map.

Uh that looks like a graphics card issue. Maybe it doesn't support hdr, what is your graphics card?

Place it in the maps folder for garrysmod.

Alright I tried to get rid of the one bad solid, and of course all my entities go bye bye. Any idea why? It says only one solid, so why does it remove all my entities? I know it had to do with merging the vertices, but I mean really? Is there anything I can do about this...?
So how exactly can I make it so when people start my custom arsenal map in CS:GO, so they won't have to type "game_type_1?" I tried using "+game_type=1" in the compile options but that doesn't work.
