What about the pros?
What pros?
people that call your map bad are not haters, most of the people here know their shit, and judging by a screenshot i saw, this map is basically square rooms with props in it. if you can't take criticism dont bother releasing anything here. gmod workshop and gmod.org has much lower standards and thats probably why kill breen still exists
i just read this thread and this forum is so goddamn bad. it's a wonder this forum has as many active readers/posters as it does because holy shit reading these threads is like chewing tinfoil
tell the guy why his map sucks, rate him mapping king ironically then move on
i don't get why there's this big stigma about decompiling maps, all it does to my knowledge is fuck up some of the decimal precision and create microgaps between some brushes (and break textures sometimes). If you want to quickly examine the core techniques someone uses to make a map then decompiling will tell you a whole lot more than running around ingame. you aren't recompiling the map (it probably won't recompile properly anyways) so the microgaps are literally a non issue
well i looked at the vmf, you have no ai nodes, 6 light enviroments, no triggers for npc makers, this is just not a good setup

the mapping section will always be nothing more than a circlejerk.
i don't care what his map is actually like, there's no need to act rude to him when he seems to be relatively friendly and happy. he sent me a pm asking how to fix something so i'm guessing he feels pretty ostracized by you guys. you should be encouraging new mappers, not mocking them. everybody had to start somewhere.

Yes, i hear mors has been getting lots of help from you as well...

with that attitude it certainly will stay that way too

He posted his map here, this is a place where things inevitably get criticized. Especially low effort, low content maps like this one. Granted it's his second map, but that doesn't make him exempt.
I'm not saying people should mock him for making a bad map, i'm saying people should be offering him tips to improve it. One of the ways to come up with these tips is to decompile his map, look at the contents, then share where he went wrong. It's supposed to be a learning experience, not an opportunity for people to make tired jabs about how his map is ugly or how he misused entities. A lot of other communities actually punish people for discouraging new mappers, and it should be the case here too.
the point i was originally making is that this entire thread was awful from the very first reply, it should have gone down a lot differently than it did
what would we be without daily drama
christ mapping section.
So I decompiled the map and you know what
1.This map is real bad, it looks like you put no effort into it in making the place. At least make it into buildings or something.
2.You didn't even "nodraw" the faces of brushes that cant be seen
3.This is a common mistake for a beginner, the oversized skybox actually make the game runs worse.
4.Kill Breen maps are not fun anymore or if you really want to, put more effort into it.
I can tell you more than this but this should be god enough for a beginner.
2 is a non-issue really. The compiler will try its hardest to optimise the map, part of the BSP system itself ensures this. Faces that are covered entirely by world brushes are culled (if I remember correctly), and faces that point to the void are culled. Nodrawing every non-visible surface isn't necessary, but it certainly does help when designing as you can see what should and should not be seen.

This is a big issues that honestly needs fixing. It's the same for basically all level design forums I've come across. The regulars are assholes to people who are learning, putting the people off of learning to design, and leaving the regulars to jerk each other off in peace. This isn't good.
Sure some new people persist and actually improve, but regulars, you need to start being a bit kinder, because holy shit it is unpleasant to be treated how you treat new guys who don't know what they are doing. Yeah you might point them in the right direction, but you don't have to tear into them quite so much if it's clear they are totally new to this.

This is why a lot of valve's maps appear un-optimized. Any brush face that will be "culled" doesn't need to have its texture messed with.
I wish people would stop spreading the "ALWAYS NODRAW EVERY FACE" mantra, sure it's a good idea to nodraw brush faces but it's not a life or death thing and there are definitely more important things to be drilling into the heads of new mappers, like proper use of func_detail and other such things.

On ritilin.
It probably would be best if there was a sticky that summarized "no pics, no clicks".
It probably would be best if there was a sticky that summarized "no pics, no clicks".
We aren't worthy of helpful stickies, remember? Even useful ones that link to the mapper's encyclopedia
Detail is your best friend when mapping, once you've made a layout you need to really spice it up with details. Look around the real world for examples. Think about how many things there actually are in an enclosed environment.

perhaps you'd like to notice that theplayer232 hasn't acted rude to anyone. he hasn't acted hostile and he hasn't whined about any criticism he's received. he isn't good at improving, but at least he tries, he doesn't even complain that you guys are acting unnecessarily rude when he is fully entitled to. mors, on the other hand, was given criticism yet refused to take note of it because "it wasn't given in a friendly manner". if you're gonna bring up something unrelated (that isn't even a topic anyway and you only mentioned it because you hope it'll make me look hypocritical which would then, in turn, boost your ego a bit.
Fuck it. I was going to write a reply, but then the circle would never be broken. You would continue to bitch, and this thread would go to shit. More to shit. You can have the hill. Doesn't mean you are in any way right, just not gonna argue with you.
Enjoy the hill, you can see Blackpool from there.

Yes, he says "i mean the haters" but he is still being "rude" to people.

TBC, he's not acting hostile because he knows the mapping 'circlejerk' (which clearly is still a problem) would just hammer him into the ground.
I don't get what it is with you and your know-it-all attitude. Just because you are one of the "original" forumers of the mapping section (or as you claim to be on Steam) doesn't mean you have rights over everyone else, or their maps. Yes, I declined the deconstructive criticism such as your own but believe it or not that was my first map and to be quite honest it was a really shit one.
Just because you dislike something or someone doesn't mean everyone else on a thread has to. Please get off this guy's thread as you actually have no place here other than to argue with other people of the mapping section. At this point, nobody cares how one treats the creator of this mapper.
You say I don't take advice but clearly he didn't read his previous thread where people said he needed images and descriptions (aka "selling" the map). This is where things like disagreement and cardboard boxes need to be tossed around.
Yes, he says "i mean the haters" but he is still being "rude" to people.
nobody (other than perhaps you) would be offended by that, it's a common term used by people that don't understand how sites like facepunch work

it's not a "know-it-all" attitude to say it's unfair for people to mock him when he only wants to learn. (i don'y know where you got "original forumers" from as all i've ever said is i've been here long enough to know how the section work) i have not acted like i have rights, it is you guys who have acted as if this op has no rights.

this doesn't relate to anything at all i honestly have no idea what the fuck you are even trying to say. everyone mocked him and i thought that was unfair, you think that just because i don't agree with everyone else i'm only here because i want to argue? i mean, heaven forbid i actually feel bad for the guy who you (not you personally, all you did was rate and shitpost) all treated rudely.

that's no reason to act rude to them. he even messaged me and included a note about how he was able to see past the bad reactions you gave him and that he looked on the bright side (whatever that could possibly be).
i don't know how none of you get it; you had no reason to act as rude as you did. especially you, ironphoenix, who should know better than to disrespect and discourage new people in section (i'm not that you wouldn't anyway, i'm just saying that you should know not to)
(User was banned for this post ("Drama bullshit im not gonna bother reading" - Craptasket))
CBT, Mors, Phoenix, let's all just chill and abandon this thread. No point in arguing really is there?

You're turning into Mr. Anonymous v2, not everything is a personal attack that needs constant refuting until it's buried into the ground.
i don't believe any of this to be a personal attack, i just don't understand why you all think it's okay to shit up this guys thread just because his map was bad. yes, say his map was bad. mock him, sure. but don't do everything in your power to make him look bad.

Like that matters, most of you cannot even follow the criticism rule.
