I prefer to use my friend's SVN checkout app, take a look at it:
gmodsvn.extra.hu
it won't make a separate .svn folder, but a single 2-byte long revision file what contains the latest revision's number what has been downloaded...
Tomorrow I will ask him to add your SVN to the database!
[editline]10:33PM[/editline]
Oh and Gmod does loads the svn folders...
At least some older versions did...
But as I only use a few, I don't bother myself with it...

GMod does not contain an SVN client and therefore has no use at all for SVN files - why would it load them automatically? It only loads files it can read. Searching the svn folders for useful files will add a few milliseconds to the load time but loading even a couple of materials or models will take a lot longer than that, so it's relatively insignificant.
It's commonly said on here that SVN files slow the opening of gmod - most of this is pure speculation by people who don't have any first-hand knowledge of it; I've never seen any proof nor experienced any difference myself.
The only possible source of slowdowns are:

More folders to search means a few more milliseconds of scanning for files gmod can read in.

More/larger files on disk combined with file fragmentation could add a few milliseconds to the disk read, but this is even less significant, especially if you defrag regularly.
The added faff of exporting every time I update and keeping two full copies of the addon adds more work (hence time) than time saved in loading gmod.
[editline]Gmod SVN Updater[/editline]
Looks like this gmodsvn.extra.hu can do it without the svn folders. Good if you don't need any of the advanced SVN features.

And yet i have noticed that when i put the svn's inside my gmod folder, gmod does startup slower, loading does take longer, and that i crash more often.

This thread is not for unfounded supposition about how the presence of files in a certain folder affects the speed and stability of a program that does not access them.
Remember, correlation is not causation.
If you want to discuss this further, please use another thread as we are getting off-topic.

yeah yeah, im sorry.
Okay, your SVN has been added to the GModSVN Updater v2!
gOOD NEWS EVERYONE!
whoops, well apparently iv been using caps for the past 4 hours...
anyway, its time once again for me to ruin all your discussions by posting pics of models you wont be able to use for weeks, this time its that lovely daehghsghsghlus ship as its going to look in source. I'm still working out all the bugs on the internal textures along with an interior geometry but i think the outer hulls gonna' stay unchanged.
http://upload.bunglist.com/pics/sb_atlantis_b10r0002.jpg
oh one more note.
WALK ON MY MODELS! :P
no I haven't just had a fork rammed into my frontal lobe while typing its because the phis model for a ship with this much geometry and that's enter-able by players is incredibly complex. so if i later join and don't find at least 3 people walking round it at all times ill go into a nerd rage.

You know i want to kiss you for that...
GMod does read the svn files. It reads every file in garrysmod/garrysmod on startup. So the more files there are the longer it takes. So SVN files do affect GMod.

OK, so by that reasoning, if i move my entire music folder into the addons folder making it 10 times bigger then gmod will take 10 times longer to start up? I am certain that's not the case. Prove me wrong.
[editline]tested[/editline]
My addons folder as normal:
Size: 4.36GB
Startup time to gm_construct, 2 minutes 29 seconds
My addons folder PLUS 5.2GB of music (over 1500 files):
Size: 9.6GB
Startup time to gm_construct, 2 minutes 16 seconds
The reduced startup time is probably due to some stuff still being preloaded in the pagefile by windows.
From this result, we can safely say that it DID NOT TAKE TWICE AS LONG TO START UP.
If we wanted to get properly scientific about this I'd test both maybe ten times in a row and average the results, eliminating outliers, but I think that we can skip this, since the "twice as long" premise is proven to be nonsense.
I think it has to do with the number of files and not so much the size.

PROVE IT. :colbert:
Your thinking it to be true does not make it any more true.
I added 1500 music files to my addon folder and it didn't take any longer to load.
Do you think that adding 1500 smaller files will suddenly make it take longer?
Please, unless you have TESTED YOUR THEORY and have PROOF, don't argue about this any more.
[editline]edited[/editline]
Edited to clarify that testing your theory implies having some proof.
Note:
By "testing", I mean actually timing and comparing both of the options you are suggesting to prove that one is significantly faster or slower than the other, or using some other method that relies on scientific principles rather than guesswork or supposition.

It reads all files in an addon folder(Need's the info.txt). If you put the Stargate SVN with all SVN files when you load it will take a bit longer, but mostly create garbage.
