I don't recall you being rude to me, in fact you do seem to be receptive.
And I'm referring to light temperature, no quotes. Its a thing. Its a range in the visible spectrum, 390nm to 780nm in wavelengths. UV one end, IR the other. Warmer lights go more red as they hit the IR (Infrared) end of the spectrum.
IR is the lowest and biggest wave of radiation before we go into invisible spectrums. They tend to be warmer in color temperature
UV is the fastest and the slowest wave of radiation before we go into invisible spectrums. They tend to be colder in temperature

To be honest, now you're just taking criticism a little to at heart. Im here to help, all you need to do is ask what you're struggling at. This community is no longer aligned in a way to talk you out of it, we'll help. You just need to know how to ask, learn to accept fault, and learn from it.
You really put effort into your feedback, its great. I sometimes learn things from your feedback to other people, thanks.
And for this map, really learn how to make one building, maybe recreate your house, I did this and it really helped me out :)
Issue with making your own billboards is its hard to make them look realistic colour balance/material and texture is hard to match to real life. Real life billboards wouldn't have such deep black, wouldn't have the same image composition and would probably have a slightly bumpy surface and visible lines where the sheets have been applied to the backboard.
What I do is I make the texture in photoshop and then put either a plaster or a paper texture over it and lower the overlay to where you could see the original texture, but keep it high enough to where you can see the plaster or what have you. It always worked for me.
I used google. I looked up whatever i was making. Strip mall. Residential home. Taco bell. Gas power plant. Trying to replicate something from memory takes way more skill and experience, something i didn't have at the time of making rockford. Post your light environment brightness and ambient values. A few years ago i had watched every single Tophattwaffle tutorial so keep going. Displacements are easy as fuck once you figure them out. They're easy to fuck up when you rush and don't post attention. Just remember some basic displacement rules:
-They can't be any sort of entity including func_detail
-They can't have tool textures on them
-Avoid powers of 4 as much as possible
-When creating them, use the texture application tool to select the individual brush faces you want turned into displacements
-They can only be made on faces with 4 sides
-Invalid brushes from vertex manipulation will destroy the displacement
-Multiple displacements must share vertices on the same point in order to be manipulated together without cracks
-The brush shape that doesn't contribute to the displacements face doesnt matter as long as it's not invalid. Focus on the used face only.
The rest you'll learn along the way.
As for you complaining about everyone roasting your 2 month map, let me put this in perspective for you. Ive been mapping for 8 years. A city map of this size would take me more than that for sure. It'd take me way less time now but i spent about 4 years on rockford on and off, making other maps in between. I built up my experience so that when i released it, i was satisfied. Never take "well its not perfect" for an answer. Do you think it's a map that a server should run to attract thousands of players? Does it compete with other maps on the workshop? No? Get to work.
You should see some of my first maps. They're no better. Keep working. Build your experience. Get better. Learn. Try new things. And don't do a city map right off the bat. They're the most complex imo.
I wasnt complaining...I was just shocked at how many people disliked it. Im not trying to sound like I cant take criticism but It does irk me when people say Im "complaining".
And youve been mapping for 8 years? Your like my age so that means when you were only 13 you did this? Damn where the f*** have I been in the mapping game.

I assume this means you don't know how? Because it is pretty complicated.
Also most tutorials online aren't even correct.
Also if you're wondering why i have 1000hp, it's because there's so many trigger_hurts.
I would not expect to see this on any roleplay server tho.
No I know how to make a func_tracktrain its just when the elevator went up to floors 3 and 4 the game wanted to fuck up and have the elevator go up and down by itself..it was just a mess so I was like fuck it I'll just make stairs. So now when I do elevators I do movelinears.
Also if you're wondering why i have 1000hp, it's because there's so many trigger_hurts.
What do you mean? Mine? I only had trigger hurts that hurt you not heal you?
I would not expect to see this on any roleplay server tho.
I beg to differ. I would think at least 2 servers at the very least would attempt to put my map.
Obviously lol not POG or Modified rp fuck no. But maybe servers starting out you know.
[editline]16th April 2016[/editline]
No! Don't use displacements on spheres or cylinders you silly man. Of course you'll get errors.
And Like i said, displacements are a little bit of a learning curve. There is some things you're going to have to clean up and tidy up before you get to be more fluent with how they work. Learn how to select individual faces and then apply the displacement. Don't select the whole object then apply displacements to it. That'll give you the NODRAW error. Just because you're struggling with the concept and best practices of a feature in the engine doesn't mean you should brush it off because you don't understand. Just keep working at it.
And to be honest, Statua is right. This does look like a map from HL1. Because of the obvious lack of displacements, overly stretched low resolution textures, general lack of any detailing. And no, Evocity is nothing like your map. Just because you put cliffs around the side doesn't mean you're copying sgts map design. Thats just goofy.
I am the comapper & texture artist from both evocity projects. No, i'm also not sgt.sickness. I do have some sort of background for my criticism here. For lights, blue/orange lights are good, but what you're trying to do is emulate the temperature of the light source. For example, 2700K (Warm) would be of an yellow-range appeal. 5000K (cold) would be bluish in hue.
VSDK Wiki - Intermediate Lighting, Color Temperature Techniques
The goal there is to make a believable light. It needs a source (like a map), proper temperature. Also when you have a proper light set up, you may need to make it work with the model you're using for the source. You may also need to tweak with the constant, linear and quadratic variables to make everything work right. You can find about here, also available on VSDK
Looking back at your comment you misunderstood me I didnt say I used displacments on cylinders or spheres. I said cylinders and spheres themselves caused me errors. Anyway I updated my map again. What do YOU think now?
Free downloadable multifloor elevator:
https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Multi-stop_elevators
It's at the bottom labelled: "VMF"
EDIT:
I'm pretty sure the dev of the map on the link didn't know how to fix a bug (doors opening randomly). So all i suggest is making it so when the elevator moves, it locks all doors. Then make it so it unlocks and opens ONLY the door it stops at. (Do this by using the path_track)
No one is going to use this map. I'm sorry.
I only had trigger hurts that hurt you not heal you?
I gave myself an admin ball because i was getting hurt.

oh. lol I see.
Well that explains that.
No one is going to use this map. I'm sorry.
Like they're going to use yours either.
How about you try not being such a harsh critic, it isn't like you come onto the scene knowing how to do everything and make everything look fabulous. You walk and fall before you can run.

Say that about your own work. Not others.

You just have poor structure in your paragraphs and the context got confusing. So if this got YOU riled up, sorry.
Also, your bloom is way too intense. I had to attempt to look at your pictures with sunglasses on.
General brushwork is still sloppy.

Richard you dont have to be THAT critical. At first you seemed a bit harsh then friendly now your being harsh again.
And, no I don't have poor grammer structure.
And I don't think there is a way to change the way the hdr looks. If I don't have hdr then I have red/yellow colorful shadows.

I'm not being too critical in any degree. How else am I supposed to take
Lastly the reason I dont usually use displacments is because 9/10 times I get errors when I use them because I f*** something up like adding nodraw to them because the hammer editor can be VERY picky. Especially if I use spheres or cylinders
Am I supposed to be thinking you're talking about orbital maneuvering instead?
Anyways, off that bit as that has nothing to add to this.
For bloom, you can make adjustments to your lights to incorporate less of the famed post-process effect. What does the values for "BrightnessHDR" appear as on your light_environment.

Criticism =/= Rudeness.
"So if this got YOU riled up, sorry"
Your trying to pretend to be the nice guy but make comments like this and it contradicts what you say.
Anyway I think Ive heard enough from you Richard Thank you for all your help but I dont need you anymore.
Please don't get "mad" anymore I just want to hear from some other people. You've said your share.
If you're not going to conduct yourself professionally, I'm not going to address you as such either. If you're going to take criticism and misconstrue it as this, then why are you bothering doing any creative process?
[editline]Garbage, this map is garbage[/editline]
just playing your map right now. What the fuck up is with the "spoooky house"
Just stop what you're doing and take a moment to reflect. Really dude.
whoa broke automerge! Sorry mods.
This guy reminds me of the one who made a "System Shock 2 Source" thread.

Also why did you rate my dumb. I said that nice comment about you being helpful now you call me dumb? Why?
Seems that comment he made now makes me look like an idiot lol. I was looking good on this site until that.
So you mean to tell me your brother has your same typing style, poor grammar, lack of capitalization, etc. and he would simply continue the conversation you were having as opposed to calling everybody racial epithets? What I see is that you couldn't handle criticism, realized you made an ass of yourself, and blamed your imaginary brother in a vain attempt to make us think "oh wait, you really didn't mean that! Please, continue about your business".
Come on boyo, you can do better than that.
It doesn't have any hl2 animals/aliens cause it was made in counter strike source.
You can still open the .VMF on the garry's mod version of hammer. It's a good manoeuvre when the hammer you're using doesn't have what you want.

I dont lie when I'm on here I only say whatevers on my mind and thats it. Hes only 7 years younger than me. He uses big words cause it makes him feeler "adequate" about himself or whatever the fuck he means by that. I just really wanted to feel accomplished after all the work I did on this map. I dont know, if you guys don't believe me I guess I shouldn't be on here anymore.
I was liking it so far but then that happened. And yes I can take criticism, everybody on the fucking internet is a critic!
P.S Don't call me boy when I'm older than you...

Yeah I tried that once in gmod but hammer said it couldnt find the counter strike source materials/models.
You think garry would update the editor to steam pipe now don't you think.
Guys you need to stop or we should get a admin to close this thread because this is getting way out of hand - 2 pages of flaming and arguing is just about enough, please.

Im sorry grenade man I guess I "lost" this "fight" I just wish people would stop calling me dumb and would give me better feedback. Im working on a 3rd update to the map. I just wanted to be friends on facepunch with everybody. Anyway grenade man what do you think of the updated version of the map. I tried to give it a more suburban feel to it.
Maybe my comment was a little too critical. But an RP map is never a good first map, and from my experience on that map, its got so many things which detract from the "serious roleplay environment that is DarkRP", I find it hard to see that any one will use this map for long term use, compared to my first mess its very good.
But all the things hurting you and the randombess of the map. Its hard to see it actually being a good roleplay map.
Sobeit, I with draw my statement

Well I actaully am working on making it less from being for serious servers...I don't know anymore it seems now that I'm more doing it for fun than to be on an actual rp server. Sometimes thats the better thing to do. Do it for fun. For everyone Im sorry for getting pissy before. Im new to this mapping scene and the whole facepunch scene so I'm trying.

Best thing to do on facepunch is to take constructive criticism and ignore none constructive criticism. Everyone will get criticised at some point.
Stuff like horror rooms, destructible walls and zoos are fun but theyre a gimmick. The more people see the gimmick the less novel it becomes and might become detrimental to the experience. If you want gimmicks either make a map dedicated to them (horror map, physicals puzzle etc) or make them subtle to the point where most players won't even know about it (like a reward for the player who explores).
Don't start out expecting your maps to be used. You spent lots of time and effort making it, sure, but theres lots of competition. And most of that competition is stuff like downtown remakes or other well established maps. You're very lucky if your map becomes widely adopted. Aim for other things, excellence in your mapping skills, respect in the mapping community, experience for future jobs, fun in making maps, artistic expression or a portfolio with the hope that a community will hire you to make them a map. If one of your projects catches on and becomes huge in that process then its like icing on an already delicious cake.
Someone like stiffy has been mapping for years, hes made loads of maps/concept pieces. Many you'll never see again (that tropical island with the road round it, santorini thing, desert map with the legit grass fading). He gets hired by communities to make maps, some of his maps have been adopted by servers, he's respected in the community, he's probably got a portfolio good enough to get him a job, I think he got featured in PC gamer magazine and hes learnt to model as part of all that. He's got all that coz he just loves doing it and keeps trying out new things.
