Is this turning into Metrostroi V2? Nice models though.
Ambient occlusion and some random grunge would do a lot for these models! :)
some random grunge
How about no
How about no
Having Flashbacks of that Unreal Engine City 17 Artwork?

im actually quite interested in your reasoning behind it. what you made there is not what I meant with grunge. Let me give you an example. [t]https://i.imgur.com/Xi5yNS8.jpg[/t] The right has no grunge layer and the left does. Imho the left just looks more realistic while the right looks flat and like from a train simulator game or something.
That is not a good example if you are trying to sell someone on grunge. Thoughtful weathering and grime is one thing, mindlessly slapping a photoshop cloud filter over it is another.
The problem is random grunge. Overlaying some random stock dirt image over a texture is absolutely stupid. Its literally the way fakefactory did things and its the main reason why his cinematic mod is worthless. It has nothing to do with realism and it just looks bad. Using some overlays to give a bit of definition to certain materials is fine, but that is by definition not random grunge. Just study the way modern developers do their textures. There is never any random grunge, especially on objects that are supposed to be contemporary, in use, or otherwise cared for. Using noise to give definition to a scene is lazy design and ends up an absolute eyesore. After all, many developers today use single-color textures and "low poly" artstyles just to avoid visual clutter. Bottom line is - the c17 scene is good because it takes advantage of unreal engines capabilities and modern workflows, but it shows some lack of artistic skill on the authors side - poor composition, lack of direction etc.
I shall pick my wording better next time then and will add that this is my hobby :)
Oh lordy what did I just come back to. Slight surface detail and wear that's worked realistically into the shape of the model = good, overlaying a NIN album cover at 50% opacity and calling it a day = bad. Agreed?
This map looks extremely exciting, I think it is about time someone did a detailed Role play map set in the United Kingdom. I love the concept of having both a cinema and theatre as well as an art gallery, this map might just be the new city role play map.
Please tell me you plan to take "FPS" into consideration. :b This looks great!
Optimisation is definitely one of my weak points when it comes to mapping, but considering the sheer scale of the map (god I hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew) I think taking FPS into consideration will be nothing short of mandatory. But again whether I get the project along to the optimisation point is up in the air, considering I haven't had the motivation to work on it for a while. (If I do have to pass it on to someone else to work on then I'll be sure to give it to a good mapper, someone who knows what they're doing and understands my vision. Fingers crossed that won't happen though) The prospect of this being a major new much-loved RP map is definitely one motivation for me to keep going with it, I suppose (as long as I don't get too many dweebs ripping it apart and uploading poor edits to the workshop. That and I'm dreading hearing Zuthar13's inevitably shit impression of a Cockney accent if he ever does a LONDON RP video) (sorry dude if you're reading this)
There's all these maps filled with LOTS of potential. The only problem is the FPS. You must always take FPS into consideration when making open maps like these. Check out "Optimization" on Hammer Tutorials. I learned a bit about it and I'm now capable of optimization. If you're getting into making big-ish maps, or even continue map making/editing at all. I would HIGHLY recommend you know how to do basic optimization.
Incredible. Like I'm home.
Looks good keep up the good work
Have you got any more screenshots to show? It looks great
Sadly not, I'm afraid; I have been doing a few other London-based mapping tests, which I'll post in the Pimpage thread soon, but apart from that I really haven't done much work on this map since the latest updates, owing to being busy with other projects and a general dip in motivation. Like I said I still ain't given up on this just yet, but if I do (worst case scenario), rest assured I'll make sure this project ends up in the right hands.
@Tikwid any chance there's a way to make a quick TTT derivative with only sections of the map, it looks like it would fit really well in the Terrorist Town Gamemode, anyway just wanted to show appreciation of your work and the hopes of it getting some love
Possibly, but that'd be a low priority compared to a finished RP version. And to be honest I'm kinda getting other ideas as to spiritual successors that'd use the work and assets created without going to waste - a much expanded version for SBox, or a single player campaign for the HL2 Community Edition perhaps....
@Tikwid Any chance I might be able to talk to you on Steam about some map stuff? I'd also kinda like to help out with models on this map.
Please do, add me at https://steamcommunity.com/id/berriesinmyheartbread - I'm very interested to hear what you could offer :0
This may be considered a dumb bump but is there any more updates pal? Tried adding you on steam but you haven't replied
Tikwid told me that she's now being paid to work on another RP map, says it's going to be set in Combine-occupied Britain. So ya, there's that, and real world things getting in the way.
Aw that's a bit of a Reee still you know I honestly don't understand why there's no english levels in games I think the most recent was mw3 you know lmao
Really nice to see all the progress on the project. I'll definitely be looking forward to the final release of the map!
Wow, it's been a while, huh? Firstly apologies for the new account; I moved computers recently and a few cookies were misplaced/eaten. However all my .vmfs and assets were successfully transferred, so nothing's been lost there; it's only motivation, interest and many other projects and factors, both online and in real life, that've come and gone in waves. I will say that even if RP_London is basically brown bread at this point, I don't want all the hard work that's gone into it to go to waste, and so I'm considering releasing an asset pack containing what was made for the project, if there's enough interest. It would mainly be materials, but a few models and sounds as well; I'd include most of the materials apart from the most specific location signs, which I'd encourage people to make themselves so their London maps can be set just where they want them to (maybe I'd include a few blank templates). I also probably wouldn't include any .vmfs of the map itself, since if this specific map was to be officially continued by someone else, I'd need to be very careful about who I'd hand it on to. Someone who shares my passion and interest for the city, someone who isn't gonna fill it with edgy humour or typical RP map foibles.........and ideally someone who's better at optimisation and layouts than I am. https://i.imgur.com/qKwTBSP.jpg The good news is I'm continuing to experiment with London aesthetics elsewhere in Source, albeit now with TF2. I've made a few layouts with a London style in mind, done a whole bunch of style tests, and even proposed an idea for an asset pack, complete with pitch documents and concept art, which you can read about here. It's definitely something I'm feeling very keen on but I'll try not to attach myself to it too much, in case it too never comes to fruition; if there isn't enough interest, if things fall through, or if the TF2 map community pariah-ifies me for begging for British assets too much, then that's life, you know? https://i.imgur.com/sXI56zG.jpg https://i.imgur.com/YOpTCLq.jpg https://i.imgur.com/US21Rhd.jpg https://i.imgur.com/U6JNnOs.jpg https://i.imgur.com/GkPl5oF.jpg https://i.imgur.com/MmXUsAC.jpg Regarding the Combine Britain map, I won't post any of that yet just in case there's any NDAs or stuff. I will say that there hasn't been much communication with the team lately and as a result progress is just as slow as it was on RP_London, although I think I've managed to integrate London's aesthetics with the Combine's reasonably well so far. Big bux are promised but I'm honestly still not too sure if I can handle a project as big and complex as this. We'll see. But there's better mappers out there - promise! But overall I'm still glad there's been some lingering interest in the output of my obsession with the Big Smoke. I don't post on here much anymore for my own reasons, so don't necessarily expect to see too much of me around, but rest assured - someday, somehow, I will release some kind of British map on some branch of the Source engine. Whether it's urban or countryside, inland or coastal - that's something I've been doodling around with too - https://i.imgur.com/JnzlFMN.jpg https://i.imgur.com/NyAGzI1.jpg -no matter what, I will release something. Mark my words! -Mattie/Tikwid (Oh yeah, did I mention RP_London kinda got featured on a major London news site?)
I'd definitely be interested in playing around with the assets if you're happy to share them - I've been tinkering with a tube station based on barbican Congrats on getting featured in Londonist! https://i.imgur.com/PXNNtXp.jpg
I saw that in the Pimpage thread - fancy that, the day I return to FP and I meet the one other person who's mapped something inspired by Barbican station in Source. https://i.imgur.com/4t8VNM7.jpg Granted this was more inspired by what's above the station, but regardless I'd love to provide the assets if they'd go towards helping other people map London stuff. (I'd even be up for directly collaborating!)
I'd be interested in collabing for sure - if I could figure out how new facepunch works I might even be able to figure out how to add my steam profile to my account or use the DM system!
