I suggest you study measures for a bit there mate, you'll find it's based on arbitrary values of water and it's density. It so happens that one centimetre cubed of water is one ml, as well as weighing one gram. By extension, 1000 cubic centimetres is a litre, a cubic metre of water weight in at a surprising one ton.
