Game Programming Competition #5 [SUP][SUB]I think we're up to 5[/SUB][/SUP] Theme We decided that Arcade is a pretty nifty theme and will go with that, it means you can make a pretty basic game and focus on all aspects of it. Arcade means getting high scores, leaderboards and no stories - easy. Your challenge is to make something which has a clear running theme - as Arcade games do - to make it fun, there is no need to make it 'authentic' looking or sounding. Useful Other Stuff http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcade_game Marking Scheme Theme [20] - Did it fit the theme of Arcade games or did it drift off into random areas? Fun [20] - Was it fun or did you paint a wall and watch it dry? Gameplay [10] - Was it playable or were the controls like a mentally disabled house cat? Art [5] - Was it beautiful or like looking at a man throw up all over himself? Overall [5] - Overall was it effective or just another video game? IN SPACE!

Hi, I am sending you my entry for the GPC#5. Name of the game: Rundiculous Download link: http://www.mediafire.com/?let2ok3ee5yjm0d Screenshots: Description:
Rundiculous is a running game that encompasses elements from VVVVVV and Bit.Trip Runner*. The goal of the game is to reach the end of each level and collect as many blue crystals as possible to get the highest score and do it with as few **fails possible. In each level player has to face many challenges to pass the level, from tricky terrain to malfunctioned robots. To do that he uses a set of skills; jumping, sliding, ***kicking and gravity flipping. Unfortunately I didn't manage to finish it and make enough levels. It only has four levels. Three levels are short and simple made mainly for the players to get used to the controls. The fourth level "First Encounter" is just a taste of what the game should have been if it was finished (thought the level is missing some terrain data). Other info: - Made using a heavily modified Advanced2D engine (C++, DirectX9, FMOD) - I did all the art myself (player is obviously a ripoff though) - Configurable controls and screen settings via options menu - DirectInput joystick support (I recommend playing with a joystick) - Level highscores - Three music tracks by forum friend Jaden "Mongo" Duchene https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mugsy-Pug-Studios/138258232906581 I hope you like it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ *not limited to **should have affected the highscores, but didn't have the time to implement ***no levels to use it
I am not comfortable with sharing my code :) Sincerely, AntonioR

Submitting my entry, even though Dlaor will probably win... Players take turns to draw a word of their selection from a random subset of 4 words, and other players must try to guess what they have drawn. Drawing is smooth and completely realtime - open two browser windows and you will observe almost no latency." http://draw.weeaboo.com

So yeah, here's mine. Name: Breaking Point Screenshot: [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/OkpHy.jpg[/img_thumb] Description:
It's basically a fancy Breakout clone with physics. I'd say it is a little easy at this point but I have a severe case of apathy right now since I started so late. I'll actually enter the next one when it starts... and start it then too. Or is there any chance you can give us the theme now or will we get it on the 1st of march http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11517902/MC.zip bonus
Before voting, be sure to play all games and post your marking scheme for each one Marking Scheme Theme [20] - Did it fit the theme of arcade or did you see the same things over and over again? Fun [20] - Was it fun or did you paint a wall and watch it dry? Gameplay [10] - Was it playable or were the controls like a mentally disabled house cat? Art [5] - Was it beautiful or like looking at a man throw up all over himself? Overall [5] - Overall was it effective or just another video game? Good luck to everyone. 7 Days to cast your votes.
I remember Procedural Generation. Lots of neat stuff came from that one.
Forgot to put the controls in mine, whoops. Left Mouse - Attack WASD - Move Escape - Quit Space - Restart on game over The hardest part of this contest was getting the voting going :v:
oh just uh click in mine. if you don't know how to play missile command: nukes are raining down on your cities (red blocks). shoot anti nukes to blow up enemy nukes. you have 30 anti nukes per wave i wont vote for myself though, but at least ill be in the top 6
Mine has a options menu where you can set the controls, but I hope people have joysticks, because it gets confusing in later (2) levels when you play with a keyboard. I wonder how many people that voted had actually downloaded and played our games ? I would like to get some feedback...
I wonder how many people that voted had actually downloaded and played our games ?
This is why you make your download links goo.gl links. I've got 9 votes so far, so that seems to be possible.
I wonder how many people that voted had actually downloaded and played our games ? I would like to get some feedback...
I agree with this though, there are always things I can improve in my games and reviews are probably the best way to get feedback.
This is why you make your download links goo.gl links.
Oh, thanks, I didn't know about that, will use it in the future. Mediafire has a download counter, but it takes ages to update...
Bad timing on the OP. Everyone is going to be playing ME3 for weeks. I mean, saving the galaxy is pretty important.
Bad timing on the OP. Everyone is going to be playing ME3 for weeks. I mean, saving the galaxy is pretty important.
Maybe people should write reviews of ME3 here to get this thread going :P There is so much rage by the players on Metacritic. I don't understand it, ME3 is not a new COD game.
It's the last voting day and not a single review has been posted yet.
It's the last voting day and not a single review has been posted yet.
That "yet" is so out of place. There is no hope, there won't be any reviews :(
