does anyone know how .vmf map files work?
Uhh... What? It's a file you open in Hammer, isn't it? And from thereon you can edit the map. You're being extremely vague.
they're key-value files.
they make things go woooosh basically they're the files Hammer loads into the editor and holds all the data and crap. Those are compiled into .BSP which means Binary Space Partitioning/Partition you could ask someone else because I'm not that knowledgable
