anyone who says theres no suspense or atmosphere and that its just jump scares obviously has never played it
anyone who says theres no suspense or atmosphere and that its just jump scares obviously has never played it
I've played them all. It's literally about 30 seconds of waiting for a boss creature and the wonderous atmosphere of some generic horror music and copy-pasted trees. ~so spooky~
oh, i had the music turned off
anyone who says theres no suspense or atmosphere and that its just jump scares obviously has never played it
No, it's just shit. It is among the lower tiers of horror quality, the "OOGA BOOGA" made-you-jump variety. Amnesia is scary. Frictional Games knows how to create an atmosphere that would scare the shit out of people and make them shut the game down, and it didn't rely on cheap scares. It used darkness as both a savior (cower in it to hide from the servants) and likewise as a detriment. As you play, your action (or lack thereof) slowly drives your character increasingly insane, and as his sanity wavers so does yours. His hallucinations become your hallucinations, when you realize that the grunting, chains clattering, and footsteps that kept you too afraid to enter the next room were really just in your head all along. I know you didn't like it, but Amnesia is far above almost all other horror titles.

i hate all these horror games where you hear all these stupid fucking noises, that have absolutely no source what so ever, thats not atmosphere thats just stupid fucking noises. if they arent coming from something that can kill you then its not scary at all. noises like wind and wildlife and such are make sense, but they aren't scary. in fact its scarier to have NO noise at all, like in this game, which STILL CREATES ATMOSPHERE because its unnatural for, especially a forest, to have dead silence. and it makes it more freaky when you hear anything at all a lot of these games even have those stupid false alarm scares, which is idiotic because you get used to that and so when anything happens you dont get scared because you assume its nothing, and if it is, well they usually have some bullshit enemies that arent scary at all because they are so stupidly easy and are only "scary" because they are usually disfigured and bloody which frankly is actually more cheesy and cliche than the enemies in this game which are so overdone that nobody actually uses them anymore. now, the sounds are very tacky, and so are the graphics. and YES it has lazy level design but that just highlights how good this is, you could have cute puppies chasing you while making soothing noises and it would still be good. most horror games always have some sort of stupid story that i dont care about at all and it usually involves some bullshit like some girl blah blah blah experiments or something idk who cares its stupid and totally disconnects me from the game. having so much story ruins it, fear of the unknown is one of the best ways to create horror. stories have no place in games anyway, you want a story you watch a fucking movie, doom had fuck all story and it still is one of the best, even better if you ignore what little story it has. now i realise you need a hook, something to make you want to keep playing, which is one big flaw of the old arcade games which, although having fantastic gameplay, get old and boring quicker than other games. but they are still good games suppose i went a bit far calling it the best horror game ever (my guess as to why everyone is being such a cunt), its hardly a game at all, and what the last boss does when it kills you is pretty lame. but it is still the best example of horror ive ever seen also ive played silent hill 2 too and its fucking gay yeah boohoo but hey AT LEAST I PLAYED IT BEFORE BAGGING IT
Holy fuck. You're an idiot. You're truly a god damned idiot.
no im just not scared of your stupid gay games that suck (User was banned for this post ("Trolling" - PLing))
i hate all these horror games where you hear all these stupid fucking noises, that have absolutely no source what so ever, thats not atmosphere thats just stupid fucking noises. if they arent coming from something that can kill you then its not scary at all. noises like wind and wildlife and such are make sense, but they aren't scary. in fact its scarier to have NO noise at all, like in this game, which STILL CREATES ATMOSPHERE because its unnatural for, especially a forest, to have dead silence. and it makes it more freaky when you hear anything at all
Well, that's like, your opinion man. Why should a sound come out of something dangerous for it to be scary? No noise at all is better? Pfft, the enemies in your game keeps making the same noise that makes no sense at all. Hell, false noises to increase tension has been used since forever, because they fucking work. It makes the player immerse, they don't want to miss the sound that would kill them, but they have to cope with other sounds as well. Even the aliens or AVP games used false noise to build tension, motion tracker reporting stuff that isn't enemy.
a lot of these games even have those stupid false alarm scares, which is idiotic because you get used to that and so when anything happens you dont get scared because you assume its nothing, and if it is, well
You're not supposed to get used to it, because you're supposed to be as careful as possible because you don't want to die. Amnesia's sounds, even false alarms, kept me on the edge, because I didn't want to fuck up. One of the most important thing in any horror game ever is sound - because it can lie to you, but it can help you as well. Knowing how to make the difference should be nigh impossible.
they usually have some bullshit enemies that arent scary at all because they are so stupidly easy and are only "scary" because they are usually disfigured and bloody which frankly is actually more cheesy and cliche than the enemies in this game which are so overdone that nobody actually uses them anymore.
As opposed to the enemies in your Doom mod? They're stupidly easy and are only "scary" because they are disfigured and bloody, and they make annoying noise.
now, the sounds are very tacky, and so are the graphics. and YES it has lazy level design but that just highlights how good this is, you could have cute puppies chasing you while making soothing noises and it would still be good.
Herr, no. Horrible/lazy level design is not showing how good it is. It wouldn't be a good horror mod if there was puppy making soothing noises, it would just be a game where you shoot puppies.
most horror games always have some sort of stupid story that i dont care about at all and it usually involves some bullshit like some girl blah blah blah experiments or something idk who cares its stupid and totally disconnects me from the game. having so much story ruins it, fear of the unknown is one of the best ways to create horror. stories have no place in games anyway, you want a story you watch a fucking movie, doom had fuck all story and it still is one of the best, even better if you ignore what little story it has. now i realise you need a hook, something to make you want to keep playing, which is one big flaw of the old arcade games which, although having fantastic gameplay, get old and boring quicker than other games. but they are still good games
This, my friend, is so incredibly stupid I recommend you erase it. Story belongs to movies? Where the fuck did you fetch that? Where have you been in the last decade of videogameing? Then you speak about Doom and that it's better because of no story. Well, that was the standards 20 years ago, mate. Shooting down enemies mindlessly sure is fun, but it gets boring fast. Games are a great medium to showcase a story where you can participate and get involved in. Horror game related, just look at Silent Hill. There is a story there, and it still manages to be scary. Fear of the unknown can be found in videogames as well. Amnesia, Penumbra or Silent hill again, for an example, has placed you in an unknown place, in the dark. You don't know what the hell is with you or against you, and you can't figure for the love of god how to get out.
suppose i went a bit far calling it the best horror game ever (my guess as to why everyone is being such a cunt), its hardly a game at all, and what the last boss does when it kills you is pretty lame. but it is still the best example of horror ive ever seen
Again, the best horror example is your opinion. Anyway, horror for you seems to be "No story, just bosses that spawn out of nowhere without any explanation in a dead forest with nothing else around."
also ive played silent hill 2 too and its fucking gay yeah boohoo but hey AT LEAST I PLAYED IT BEFORE BAGGING IT
Define why Silent Hill 2 is gay (In your opinion, again)?
youre being completey arrogant i didnt make this thread to argue about anything, i was trying to show people a really cool game and you cunts come in here, take one look at it, say its shit and call me an idiot. that pisses me off
OP is butthurt as fuck. Seriously how is this scary at all? There's 3 enemies, and they all do the SAME FUCKING THING. And you think that's scary? There's absolutely no tension being built up. You're never gonna get scared a second time because the game's scares are all the same. Just reviewed what was said in the thread, literally one person said something slightly negative about the mod and you flip your shit :v:
i have the decency to play something before calling it shit, you should too
i have the decency to play something before calling it shit, you should too
Fine. So if I play it entirely, and come back, can I tell you how bad it was?
i have the decency to play something before calling it shit, you should too
Oh cool I just finished it and came back to see this That was fucking SHIT There's no element of horror at all, the enemies are boring and have no unique qualities, the level design is poor and emphasises a sense of repetitiveness, and the music was so fucking annoying I had to turn the sound off. Where the hell did you get your concept of a good horror game?
i bet you think doom is shit too then?
i bet you think doom is shit too then?
Herr, you completely pulled that out of your arse?
Guys, guys, calm down. We all have different tastes, different ideas of what's scary. That's why there are so many different kinds of horror games and movies, we're all affected by different kinds of horror differently. Ghoul's forest doesn't work for me, but it works for him, so I say I'm glad he found a WAD he can enjoy. God knows the Doom community can sometimes be too purist to try anything other than standard levels. I say we all recommend Doom WADs we do find creepy so we can enjoy all of them.
i bet you think doom is shit too then?
What I'm sorry you'll need to rephrase that in a way that's less stupid
A couple good horror wads I've read about: Brains 1 (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12568) and 2 (http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12598). City of the Damned is a good zombie based one : http://www.realm667.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=466
I've never seen someone so butthurt.
Ghoul's forest may not be the best horror game but it's one of the best Doom wads.
Ghoul's forest may not be the best horror game but it's one of the best Doom wads.
No, it's really not. It's well polished because it's coming from a man who's done a lot of work on Doom wads. Once this series took off like a fucking pop single, he ran with it and never looked back, even making a multiplayer variant (which, hey, may be fun. Never tried it.) It may be one of the most well known due to it's popularity and that may make it seem good, but as previously stated, it's not. It's a thirty minute romp (tops) of some custom enemies in a forest. As someone who grew up suckling Doom II's teat, I've had my fair share of good (and bad) wads, and this certainly doesn't rank near the top 10. Top 50 would still be a close call.
I played it and I've been more scared having a shit and realising there's no toilet paper
That can be pretty scary though.

Overall I'd pick Master of Puppetry over Ghouls vs. Humans any day. And yeah, Ghoul's Forest is not "one of the best" Doom II wads. Personally I think that's an insult to the people who spent months or even years working on huge, awesome WADs that you've never heard of simply because unlike Ghoul's Forest they don't have an army of 12-year-olds making videos of themselves plastering annotations over their 10-minute playthroughs.
i bet you think doom is shit too then?
are you implying anybody could think DOOM's music was annoying ahaha
Anyone played the ghouls forest 4 (parody)?
i came into this thread to talk about this fun game and all i see are people moaning about how wrong the op is. tsk tsk
Not as scary as the Shalebridge Cradle.
this WAD is about playing this with friends over skype and hear then yell and get scared.
This game is scary if you havent watched the video. Played it with my friend and i recorded it. We screamed like mad:) I reccomend this.
