So i bought the BF2 at the sale and i thought i could try it today, i made an account but when i try to enter multiplayer game it says the CD key is invalid. I thought it was weird when it didn't ask it when i was installing it.
So now i can't even find a fucking place to put it in so i need some help.
Contact EA support.
Run it as admin. Don't use Steam overlay. Make sure Punkbuster is running and working.

I ran it as admin, validated the files and now i am disabling steam overlay.
Works now. Thanks to both of you!
Disabling the Steam overlay is not strictly necessary. but Punkbuster doesn't like it sometimes.
Okay it keeps saying that CD key is not valid when i try to connect to ranked server.
I updated punkbuster, i registered the game, i wrote the CD key to Battlefield 2 code program that is in the BF2 support file.
Still doesn't let me to join ranked servers.
Strange. Is the punkbuster service running properly?
I'm afraid google will have to be your friend from here on out.
I am pretty sure I know the issue. Look for the registry entry for the cd key (it's in the ergc registry folder). Remove it all and retype yours in (no dashes or shit, just straight in) with "x9392" in front of it.
It should look like:
(Note: I am not actually sure how many characters it is, but the X's represent your cd key)
This is just one of the many potential fixes to problems with BF2. With luck, this is the problem you are having. Tell me if it works! Also, you may want to copy down the original registry entry before you go and clear it out and retype, just in case.

Also, consider yourself lucky. Steam makes installing BF2 100x easier to install. No joke. Those patches and installers are buggy as fuck.
My little brother has the same problem, it's annoying.
Punkbuster is a load of shit and Battlefield 3 better not use it.
Rather PB than nothing tbh.
Had the same bollocks happening to me after i bought BF2 on that sale. If you can't get it to work try to add your key (which you can view in steam by rightclicking on your game) to the window when you start Battlefield2_code.exe (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\battlefield 2\support) Fixed it for me.

Nothing would work better than PB. It has a bad habit of kicking safe players just because of packet loss. But letting a hack using player continue to play. It's a piece of shit with terrible detection.
I have the same problem, and I've tried every solution in this thread, and it still says my CD key is invalid.
Fix for everyone that has this problem is here:
Worked 100% for me.
Worked for my little brother too.
No registry no crap, just close steam then run it as administrator. Then just verify Bf2's game cache and done.

That didn't work either.
