If you guys hate playing linear games, then you should just play Crysis. You have many options on how to attack your enemies most of the time and at some points, you aren't restricted to any small areas.
The plaza is just shit its where you get lost because you have no way to think about where to go. It's a problem you pretty much have to brute force, just close your eyes, press w until you can progress along the arbitrary linear path, with nothing added to the atmosphere from that. Pretty, though.
The fuck are you on? The whole beginning is one of the most atmospheric moments of any game I've ever played. Atmosphere translates in different ways, with HL2 it was more a cinematic atmosphere that was achieved. It was clear cut understanding of what was occurring. You seem to like the general idea atmosphere. The best example I can create would be Dues Ex or every other RPG that seems to roll with this. Instead of getting a clear idea and understanding, you get this foggy haze of what looks like something is happening, but you don't exactly know what. TO compare the two, or for that matter complain about the linearity of a game based on your own personal experience is retarded because it can be canceled out by someone else. For example...I spent 10 minutes trying to figure out which way I was supposed to go, I thought I had to through one of the laser barriers or something and then I got distracted by the game before I finally noticed the open street. Hell, if you get lost.....how does holding down the 'w' key help?
Bulletstorm demo went live today. Go play it and see if they've taken a few (good) steps back to old FPS games.
like too mainstream ironically
I love playing Insta-Gib CTF on UT2004.

There was no way for you to think about how to progress. Which means you aren't really thinking about what's going on.

That's BmB for you.

And I didn't just run up against the laser barriers :downs: I actually did pause look around for some way to get up there and thats when I saw the open street. This thread isn't about the "good ol' style" of FPS, this thread is only about the fucking level design. You all have completely skipped over the run and gun gameplay, excessively dangerous/awesome looking guns and the general really heavy metal-esque/silly factors that made those games great. All of you are just yelling about a single visual aspect and how that equates to thinking. What about the actual fucking emotions you get from tearing a demon to shreds with a minigun or insta-gibbing floating cyclops head BFG9000. The games of the past were all based on pure simple gorey killing in epic ways. For most users of FP, I'd say they knew what they were talking about when it came to gaming and what makes a game fun and entertaining....to them. I doubt many of them have actually tried modding a game or seriously just learning how to make a good simple map in a level editor. I'm actually going to college FOR game design so I need to know what works and what doesn't. Whenever I'm offered and different kind of game I play it and try it out. I look for mods for the game and I look for other games made by the developer. I NEED to know what makes a good videogame because my future life after graduation has a massive stake in my experience of what makes games like Doom amazingly awesome and fun and what makes games like Half Life insightful great works of art. In fact, the two descriptions I used for those games can be switched back and forth because all of those apply to them, they have to! Note:I apologize for any grammatical errors and or sounding like I'm yellling. Its the internet after all so I know that most of the time what I say falls on deaf ears. I just needed to let it out or I'd end up taking my anger out another way.
welcome to facepunch lesson 1 bmb can't fight for himself against his own dumb shit
I am thankful BmB doesn't visit hardware and software as much any more. Though his arguments over there usually had some grounds. Here they are just hopeless.

I've recently been playing Quake Live which is pretty fun, but there are always those one or two people in every server who have been playing since Quake 3 and destroy everything with KD ratios of 5 or more. Kind of shitty since they specifically go into lobbies where their skill is higher (while I go into lobbies that have me skill matched usually)

But I never ran into that problem; usually I was paired up with people skilled enough to give me a challenge, but not too good so that they dominated me.
I personally enjoy more realistic shooters than the old school shooters. I mean, I still love Quake and UT, but I honestly enjoy playing ArmA 2, PR, SWAT 4 and those kinds of games more.
I personally enjoy most kinds of games. As long as they're developed well, are fun to play, and rewarding in some way whether it be pure blood lust or philosophical insight I'll enjoy it.
Its just a generic CoD clone.
lolwhat. Have you even played it?
(psst, he's obviously trolling)
As always.
(psst, he's obviously trolling)
BmB has a reputation of posting meaningless shit everywhere.
BmB has a reputation of posting meaningless shit everywhere.
True, but from what I've seen of his posts (not much, thank the deities), it seemed like he's just stupid.
Back on topic, I genuinely love Half-Life 2's gameplay. Apart from the immersion and storytelling etc., the gunplay was pretty old school, and very enjoyable in my opinion. The AI was pretty competent also.
Opinion.
good job pointing out an opinion now try to say something relevant
This is a common video I see when people bash the AI of Half-Life. The thing most people don't realize is that it has very little to do with the actual AI. It occurs because the programmers designed this sequence wanting the player to pick up an obstacle to shield themselves, allowing them to progress. Gordon only has one hitbox, and in this particular sequence, I will assume that covering up that hitbox blocks Gordon from view, causing the Combine soldier to go dormant. The above video is nothing more than a bug exploit, and doesn't have much to do with the actual AI.
Bulletstorm demo went live today. Go play it and see if they've taken a few (good) steps back to old FPS games.
I've been waiting all week for it but I can't play it because I don't have fucking Xbox Live gold.

PS3 version of bulletstorm seems like a shitty port. Graphics aren't as good as xbox's and there is less color. PC and Xbox look like the way to go. example: There are sun rays through trees in the xbox demo, but not in the PS3. And the color seems to be off. Also the ps3 version has terrible AA, everything is so JAGGY. And the game sometimes stoops down to 30 fps on heavy moments.
