Havent played pc games in ages, want to get into an RPG. Something you can get really involved in, but ive played oblivion for so long im not too keen on any of that series (this means no skyrim) what do you suggest?
New Vegas
Gothic
Witcher 1 or 2 [editline]17th August 2012[/editline] or hold out for dark souls on the pc
Icewind Dale, the king of expansive RPG's. your head will hurt on the first playthroughs!
Neverwinter Night 1/2, those games are endless. Alternatively Fallout 2 or Arcanum.
Neverwinter Night 1/2, those games are endless.
Neverwinter Nights 2 was a top-notch fucking game i would add KOTOR to that too. golden-age Bioware
Neverwinter Nights Icewind Dale / Bauldurs Gate KOTOR 1/2 (Morrowind?)
Baldurs Gate I & II.
Neverwinter Nights 2 was a top-notch fucking game i would add KOTOR to that too. golden-age Bioware
Neverwinter Nights 2 wasn't Bioware. Also, i'd recommend playing through NWN2 solely for the amazing expansion pack, Mask of the Betrayer. And look into Planescape: Torment.
Railworks 3.

Deus Ex!
I'd recommend The Witcher 1 and/or 2, though it doesn't really fulfill your "expansiveness" demand in terms of the playable game world area.
icewind dale is ok but i thought it was almost borderline hack-and-slash, and most quests were really dull and boring (too many obtain item quests). the hordes of enemies sort of took out the tension for me. depends what you like, though. id say baldurs gate (2) is one of the best rpgs ever, it's a lot slower than icewind dale but from a roleplaying perspective it's (imo) superior. these are all party-based D&D games though, and if that's not your cup of tea i suggest morrowind.
these are all party-based D&D games though, and if that's not your cup of tea i suggest morrowind.
Just saying, OP said he didn't want any recommendations for Elder Scrolls games.
if you're interested in Baldur's gate, there's a remake coming out in September of both the first and second one, with extra quests and characters and all.
Planescape Torment is great
