A constant downward spiral, and it seems even reality has turned against him. Grey has awoken to find that the world has gone quiet, the streets empty. You must find help." Grey is an upcoming HL2:EP2 psychological horror mod where you must solve puzzles and unravel a storyline filled with a dark past. You will fight to survive with using every last bullet you have, and struggle to search every room for that health kit that you need. You will encounter many horrors and fight to your last breath. This is really cool mod with a lot of new features: -New monsters with completely custom models and animations -9 new weapons with ironsights -Engaging storyline with 2 different endings -Hardcore difficulty mode featuring new maps and storyline -Sick custom GUI and particles -Other awesome coding bits like failed reload, flickering flashlight, memos and objectives, anti-cheating mechanism, etc. ModDB: http://www.moddb.com/mods/grey Rock, Paper, Shotgun review: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/07/26/hands-on-horror-mod-grey/ Decided to remake the thread because the last one was just a "compare this to Cry of Fear/trash ruMpel" thread. This looks amazing. Can't wait to play it.
This looks pretty cool.
Why would they take their example screenshots with anti-aliasing off?
Why would they take their example screenshots with anti-aliasing off?
It's a jagged experience.
Looks quite nice thus far.
Looks good for a 2004 game maybe but I don't know, I've gotten quite bored of CoF. Id' have to see some good details.

Can't wait to play this. Looks like it will compete well with CoF.
It looks nice, may I just suggest that you make the weapons not too powerful... The key to horror is lack of power-you are in no way capable of stopping what is after you. Take the fight out of fight or flight. Maybe incorporate enemies that can be killed and enemies that can't/are resistant to bullets/damage? I really want to play it, your mapping looks great :) (just make sure to replace a couple of textures that look a bit low-res)
Horror mods are the new zombie mods.

If anything they are a bit too weak imo, and need some tweaking.
is that really a pewdiepie reference
to be fair, he did contact us about playing it so i guess the mapper stuck that in there for him
Please dont put any screamers in this. They are just dumb and once one happens you always have to worry about it to happen again and its a cheap scare.
They are just dumb and once one happens you always have to worry about it to happen again and its a cheap scare.
That can actually be a pretty good (but dickish) way of building tension. You're cautious and nervous for the rest of the game/mod wondering when the hell the next screamer or jump scare is going to be.
They are just dumb and once one happens you always have to worry about it to happen again and its a cheap scare.
constant worry is basically tension. "will this that the other happen" is a good way of screwing with the player, and it provides a way of either letting them relax and making them feel better or to escalate their worry and send them hurtling into a complete and utter mind-screw.

You can build tension without screamers, and the tension just feels better. With a screamer you will always jump, hell the screamer could be a baby laugh out of nowhere that is really loud and a flash of puppy on screen and you would still jump. Its cheap and a dumb thing to worry about because it isnt fun. Where as being completely alone, hearing fucked up sounds, but nothing is happening, will be much better tension.
-Failed reload Oh grand, less ammo. So will ammo be plentiful or will it be survival horror-esque amounts of ammo? -flickering flashlight Hello eye strain! -Anti-cheat mechanism ...wait, is this multiplayer? Never understood why people include these in singleplayer.

The failed reload just makes it longer to reload occasionally, nothing more. As far as the flashlight goes, it doesn't flicker very often, so it's really not a big deal. The anti-cheat mechanism is also just another thing to make sure people just don't noclip through the whole thing and ruin the game experience, it's like how people who make flash games disable the "Tab cheating" exploit. Also, there's not much in terms of cheap scares, I can say that much. The tension is built by the atmosphere and music, etc mainly.

Still don't quite agree with the anti-cheat system though, no single-player game has that mechanic save for multi-player. (At least, none of the major ones have.) Why not have the player enjoy the game their way? I mean, I'll play games the legit way the first time, and then hunt for the secrets I've missed with secrets. (Finding the "cutscene/broadcast" areas in HL2 for example.)
The Citizen uses an anti-cheat system where trying to noclip into a secret area or similar sends you into a "noclip dungeon" where a guy will chastise you for cheating and go on a long, Mr. Resetti-like speech about how bad cheating is before sending you back into the main game.

Wow, this looks pretty damn cool. I wish I was 1300 people so I could like the facebook that many times
