http://www.valvetime.net/threads/exclusive-next-gen-source-2-engine-is-in-development.215336/ Now I don't know if this is true but holy shit if it is
Our resident investigator Barnz has done some more digging in the Source Filmmaker script files, and he's uncovered probably some of the biggest news we've ever reported on our site. He's found many more references to a "Source 2", but not just one vague line like our previous entry. We're only one file deep, and already it's clear that the references to "Source 2" are indeed referring to a next-gen engine that Valve is currently developing. I'm only going to show one line in this post, but there are about 60+ references here, and this one line is probably the most telling. The Pastebin & file path: ".../SourceFilmmaker/game/sdktools/python/global/lib/site-packages/vproj/vproj.py" Line 1387: '''Return an str with the current engine version. If key doesn't doesn't exist, assume 'Source', otherwise invalid -- assume next-gen 'Source 2'.''' There are references to Source, Hybrid, and Source 2 in this file. We speculate that Hybrid is the base for which Source 2 is sitting on. Barnz also says it looks like Source 2 is using the same pipeline as Source, meaning that it will probably be keeping its .BSP level format. We haven't found any references to DirectX or OpenGL yet, or Episode Three for that matter, but we're still investigating. The Ep3 reference from before was just a comment, so it's unlikely we'll find any more mentioning of it. Source Filmmaker was in development parallel to Source 2, hence why these script files have so many references to the new engine. Valve wants you to know that they "don't like to brag, but Source is considered the most flexible, comprehensive, and powerful game development environment out there. And it's about to get even better." We'll keep you posted if we find anything else!
called it
i thought it was established valve internally nicknames the post l4d era source engine as "source 2"
i thought it was established valve internally nicknames the post l4d era source engine as "source 2"
That is what I was led to believe for quite some time. But naturally, people are running with it until something is stated one way or the other. Also, I believe it was originally a product of searching done from someone here on Facepunch. Fake edit: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1160439&p=37085287&viewfull=1#post37085287 Which was then noted on Lambda Generation: http://lambdageneration.com/posts/references-to-hl2-episode-three-and-source-2-found-inside-source-filmmaker/
called it
No you didn't.
Well, we now know what Half-Life 3 is running on.
Well, we now know what Half-Life 3 is running on.
Frostbite 2
No you didn't.
Don't make such baseless claims. Was talking about how Source's new announcement for 2012 would be Source 2 with my bro just two days back.
Don't make such baseless claims. Was talking about how Source's new announcement for 2012 would be Source 2 with my bro just two days back.
Valve did say SFM wasn't the big thing in 2012, I'd say that Source 2 is definitely on the way
Don't make such baseless claims. Was talking about how Source's new announcement for 2012 would be Source 2 with my bro just two days back.
It was a joke...
It was a joke...
I highly doubt it. And if you did, then it was a bad joke.
Source Squared
There were posts in the SFM thread about stuff we found in the SFM files such as new hammer icons and code Exhibit A: Exhibit B:
I hope that new hammer will be easier to use. And better terrain creating sounds awesome.
Real time map updating is something all mappers wish for everyday of their lives. Imagine working on a map inside the game engine! No more guessing about how the lighting is going to work out. I can dream...
I remember a year ago when Valve said they weren't on Source 2 or something like that. Will time does change and this is good news.
Known engine names ''' SOURCE = 'Source' SOURCE2 = 'Source 2' SFM = 'SFM' HYBRID = 'Hybrid' ALL = 'All' SOURCE_FAMILY = ( SOURCE, SFM ) SOURCE2_FAMILY = ( SOURCE2, HYBRID ) ALL_ENGINES = ( SOURCE, SOURCE2, SFM, HYBRID )
from another .py file

they should call it source: gold
I can't wait to see all the games valve aren't going to make with this.
they should call it source: gold
That would be awesome
Looks like this is the last we'll see of the Source Engine though, you know what Valve are like with the number three.
Heh. Hybrid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_(video_game)
I can't wait to see all the games valve aren't going to make with this.
Don't worry, there will be plenty of games. Left 4 Dead 3, Dota 3, Global Offensive 2.
it'd be weird for them to announce Source 2 this year before DOTA 2 is released. Unless DOTA 2 will ultimately end up on that engine.
About fucking time.
I can't wait for "Half-Life 2: Source 2: Episode 1"
I really hope this isn't a teaser for something that'll come out 6 years later. Who knows. Maybe we'll have a taste of the Havoc physics engine V3! :v:
episode 3 taking forever. mystery solved.
Half-Life 2: Episode Three Forever. "What about the game Gordon, was that any good?" "After 12 fucking years, it should be."
