What are the Yakuza games? The Yakuza series of games are an action adventure open world series of games where you primarily play as Kazuma Kiryu, a Yakuza with a heart of gold, solving whatever crazy situation is going on in the red light district of Tokyo known as Kamurocho, which is based off the real life location of Kabukicho. Much of the game consists of either going around and beating the living crap out of people who try to harass you by smashing their skulls in with anything from your fists to a giant frozen tuna. If you're not in a fight then you're exploring the deep depths of Kamurocho, going through with the plot or if you'd rather you can at any time ignore the main plot for the many side quests, all of which are charming and worth your time. Other than that the games have a metric ton of content that you can get engaged in, such as bowling, darts, fishing, Sega brand arcade games, darts, karaoke, batting practice, gambling, and in some games training a hostess to be the best moneymaker in Kamurocho, or becoming a host yourself and being the sexiest ladykiller out there. What is the series chronology and what systems are they on? Currently the games in chronological order are as follows. Yakuza 0 (Released on March 12, 2015 for JP, & Jan 24, 2017 for WW. Released on PS4 for WW, PS3 for JP) Yakuza 1 (Released on Dec 8, 2005 for JP, Sep 5 2006 for NA, & Sep 15 for EU. SPINOFFS AND ALTERNATE GAMES IN THE SERIES!! As if the series wasn't already long winded and convoluted there are spinoffs and now alternate versions of the longstanding games in the series, that's right folks, we're getting into Metal Gear style territory here! Yakuza Kenzan (Released on March 8, 2008 for JP only. Released on PS3) This game in the series is a spinoff that takes place in feudal Japan, this game has no relation to the official chronology of the series. Yakuza Ishin (Released on Feb 22, 2014 for JP only. Released on PS4) This game is similar to Kenzan, except takes place in the 1800's during the Bakumatsu period. Yakuza Dead Souls (Released on June 9, 2011 for JP, March 13, 2012 for NA, & March 16, 2012 for EU. Released on PS3 WW) This game in the series is a spinoff that takes place after Yakuza 4 where a zombie infestation has taken over Kamurocho. Again this game is only a spinoff and has no official relation to the lore. Unfortunately I am unable to find an opening for this game online. Yakuza Kiwami (Set to release in Summer of 2017 WW. Released on PS4) This game is a complete remake of Yakuza 1, besides the updated graphics and combat, nothing has changed character wise or plot wise. A fan made trailer taking Kiwami's visuals and putting them over the sound from the original trailer. Feel free to discuss the games in this thread! Please spoiler tag any spoilers for the series. If you would like to get a start on the games then you can pick up Yakuza 0 today on the playstation store, or at most game retailers. Thread music. FEEL THE HEAT
FEEL THE HEAT
I still firmly believe the best heat moment was when Kazuma punched a tiger in the face.
Yakuza 2 is objectively the best game in the series.
Yakuza 2 is objectively the best game in the series.
I fucking love the second game, Osaka had so much style it was insane.
I'm really hoping they make a Kiwami 2. Also anyone who play Zero catch the reference with the Bontan hunter?
I'm really hoping they make a Kiwami 2. Also anyone who play Zero catch the reference with the Bontan hunter?
There's another like it with a party-happy child from the Dojima family. Fortune-teller part was pretty good, too.
There's another like it with a party-happy child from the Dojima family. Fortune-teller part was pretty good, too.
I loved those two. Honestly I feel Zero is such a good starting point.
As someone interested in the series that could get access to it, should I start now with PS2 Yakuza or wait till summer for the remake?
As someone interested in the series that could get access to it, should I start now with PS2 Yakuza or wait till summer for the remake?
Wait till summer, then hope for PS2 on PS4 release of Yakuza 2 or just grab a PS2, IDK
As someone interested in the series that could get access to it, should I start now with PS2 Yakuza or wait till summer for the remake?
Wait till summer but if you want to get a start on it spend the $60 to get Zero. It's a prequel to the entire series and IMO you'll have a lot more fun with the rest of the games if you start there.
Kyodai [editline]20th February 2017[/editline]
I'm really hoping they make a Kiwami 2. After seeing this scene of the first game I am really on edge about whatever it is that makes Majima snap in Y0. I mean, jesus, I'm hoping that whatever it is has some serious impact, because most people who snap this bad compared to the Majima I was introduced to in Chapter 3 go like this from delving too deep into Cthulu mythos shit rather than just mundane underworld affairs.

I'll update the OP when I get back to my PC.
I just bought Yakuza 6 since I found a pretty good deal on it, I've heard mixed things about it but I hope I'll end up enjoying it
I loved the demo of y6 but i can easily see the new combat system leading to less interesting boss encounters and the new framerate leading to gross Still a good experience tho

In Kiwami he's much more of a sympathetic character and he's never quite this crazy in the later games.

In OG Yakuza he was some crazy asshole who kept wanting to fight Kiryu, in later games they turned him into a wacky comic relief and they rewrote Kiwami to match his later appearances.

Its that wacky Majima! instead of the psychopath who beats the shit out of his own men for no reason.

Plus let's face it getting the reward after completing the Cabaret Club Czar in 0, I can totally see how Majima is crazier than a fruit cake. I've been spending the past 3 days on that.
0 spoils [sp]its a shame nishitani and majima didnt get to be real friends for longer than a cutscene :( [/sp]
Not a fan of being what, seven mainline titles in and still being stuck in unskippable cutscenes before every activity
Just bought Yakuza 0 yesterday and I've been having a blast with it. I didn't think I'd be enjoying it this much. Time to get 3 and 4 on PS3 soon...

My first game was yakuza 4 and it felt like just the right starting point without going back to the beginning. You start with an all new cast of leads, the reminisce mode, and all the things that make Yakuza great.

YAKUZA 4 SPOILERS [sp]When Kiryu has to fight Akiyama and Tanimura I screamed like a schoolgirl.[/sp]

That fight can suck a fat one as far as I am concerned.[/sp]
I know that it's considered alright to skip 1+2 because they're on the PS2 and it's a lot harder to get, and with Kiwami, 1 will probably be considered almost completely unnecessary, but I really wish more people could experience those two games. Especially 2 since it's one of my favorites. I think the tone and atmosphere are really great, which is something I appreciated about 0 since the tone was a lot more in line with 1 and 2 compared to 3-5.
Unrest + 1's bloomy gritty kamurocho streets lays the atmosphere on super thick
