• The Great Rifle Debate: M4A1 versus AK74M

As you may know, the most common firearm debate is about the two most famous assault rifles in the world, the American M4A1, and the Russian AK74M. But first off, we must consider the basics of each weapon. [release]
M4A1
In Production: 1994 - Present Designer: Eugene Stoner Cartridge: 5.56x45 NATO Muzzle Velocity: 2900 ft/sec (884 m/sec) Rate of Fire: 700–950 round/min cyclic Barrel Length: 14.5 in (370 mm) Total Length: 33 in (840 mm) (stock extended)/29.75 in (756 mm) (stock retracted) Weight (Empty): 6.36 lbs (2.88 Kg) Weight (Loaded) 6.9 lb (3.1 kg) Sights: Iron or Various Optics [/release] [release]
AK74M
In Production: 1974-2011 Designer: Mikhail Kalashnikov Cartridge: 5.45x39 Soviet Muzzle Velocity: 2,935 ft/sec (900 m/s) Rate of Fire: 650 RPM Barrel Length: 16.3 in (415 mm) Total Length: 37.1 in (943 mm) (stock extended) / 27.6 in (700mm) (stock folded) Weight (Empty): 7 lbs (3.2 KG Weight (Loaded) 7.5 lbs (3.4 kg) Sights: Iron or Various Optics [/release] Personally, I would choose the M4A1. Not only is the ammo very cheap here in the U.S, it's simple to clean and actually very rugged. The Iron Sights on the M4A1 alone are easy for quick target acquisition, and the rails allow for easy optic changes.
Uh, the debate isn't just the M4A1 vs the 74M. It's the whole AR15 family versus the whole AK family.
Throwing this out there, but i think the 47 is more world renowned; just that the 74 saw more use as it's still produced today and the 47 was only made in limited numbers. It's the whole AR15 family versus the whole AK family.
It's also this as they're all based on one solid base for the most part. I think though, what the op meant was in their category for the 5.56-5.45 caliber. A lighter round more practical.
They really aren't comparable. There is a video floating about somewhere on youtube explaining why.
Whichever one's cheaper. Both of them kill the same.
Both great guns IMO
Does anyone have any info about the 5.45 round vs. the 5.56?
i think both would really hurt you
They're almost nothing alike. [editline]11th December 2011[/editline] Also worth mentioning that they both shoot bullets that are very likely to kill.
I think the M4A1 has killed somebody before.
ak47 will shoot em up as good as any m4, for cheaper plus they are made by bad guys and bad guys never live very long according to movies so they don't need to be that durable
I remember seeing a video on youtube that the firing mechanism in the ak family is so violent that it actually warps the barrel minutely when fired. This obviously makes it less accurate.
Comparing similar weapons doesn't do shit when you know that the handler makes all the difference.
Clearly a much more suitable, general title would have been XM177E2 vs AKS-93SM6.
different guns for different purposes. the M4 makes a better sharpshooter rifle (in my hands at least, AKs tend to have a shorter effective range) but the AK is better for medium-close range shooting. [editline]11th December 2011[/editline] obviously neither one can compete with a remington 700 or the like but the M4 gets more good range.
I thought AK's were easier to clean.
I thought AK's were easier to clean.
AKs are a bitch to clean but can operate nearly submerged in mud so you don't have to do it too often
you're kidding right i've owned 2 different AK type weapons and both of them were easy as hell to clean
Does anyone have any info about the 5.45 round vs. the 5.56?
5.56 tends to be more accurate cause of more power charge, thus faster velocity. 5.45 is slower, less accurate but plenty more stopping power.
you're kidding right i've owned 2 different AK type weapons and both of them were easy as hell to clean
I'm talking compared to the M4A1, the whole thing strips in 60 seconds if you know what you're doing
Most people on this forum haven't used either of the guns.
Pretty sure it depends on the scenario
I think the AK47 IMHO is the best rifle for long term use in the world hands down, it can be used in practically any environment easy and is very, very rugged. Sure, it may not have other guns accuracy, but it's very universal and reliable. It was also way ahead of its time when it was created. Of COURSE, other guns are better for other uses, but just universally, its a fantastic gun. NOTE, this is the original model AK47, not the 'modernized' model. The original is fucking amazing from what I've seen, but from someone who isn't an avid gun user.
The AK has better damage rating in CoD, so it's the obvious choice for any gun enthusiast
Both of these rifles are just far too similar. They fire a similar round and are used in the same role. A common argument for AR-15 pattern rifles being better is their modularity, but you can easily achieve the same level of modularity on an AK. 74M was developed in 1991 by the way
modernized is plain old better in every respect
The modernized version is more accurate but craps on the entire point of an AK47 because it jams much easier The AK47 is meant to be rugged and last for as long as possible, while still being reliable.
it's marginally more accurate, if anything from a more solid build, a gun nut wouldn't have to tell you that, it's simple machine design. newer things hold better, and they're making the new AKs with stronger materials and no longer in garbage soviet factories by means of tired, smelly, and/or hungry peasants it does not jam easier and it remains as rugged as its forefathers, all while being more cost effective [editline]12th December 2011[/editline] its also lighter
New AKs beautiful but expensive and bad for comparison
