First and foremost why the hell is there no thread about these guys honestly. Look at them, they are down to earth. Now for some information. Mastodon is grouped under a few different musical genres mostly Progressive or Sludge metal though. They are well known for their concept albums and general craziness of their songs. By crazy I mean odd time signatures, tempo changes and use of hybrid picking and effects. Members: Brent Hinds (Lead Guitar): Bill Kellilher (Rhythm Guitar): Troy Sanders (Bass): Brann Dailor (Drums): They all do vocals Their discography is as such: Mastodon has 4 studio released albums Remission 2002: This is Mastodon's first studio release. It is not very solo friendly, but the riffs are really tight and you get a real feel of sludge metal. Leviathan 2004: My personal favourite album with Mastodon. It's a concept album about Moby Dick. I felt as if I am Ahab should've been the opening song as if telling a story, but Blood and Thunder has a place in the heart of a lot of metal fans and is a very powerful opener. The album flows really well and is moving onto the more progressive side of mastodon. Blood Mountain 2006: This album is crazy. Capillarian Crest is a perfect example of the absolute madness of this band. I remember watching an interview with Bill Kellilher and he had said that "Brent really wanted to have both of us playing that madness riff, you'll know what I'm talking about, but I said that it would take me 5 years to sit down and learn that playing style." This album is very sludgey, yet progressive. Crack the Skye 2009: This is all out progressive. This album is a tribute to Skye who is the late sister of the drummer Brann Dailor. This album is full out concept. It flows very well into each song. The Last Baron I have to say has my all time favourite solo. It's a very touching album and also mentions Rasputin and Icarus. They also have two compilation albums: Call of the Mastodon: Lifesblood: Now for some musical content: Blood and Thunder: Naked Burn: O'le Nessie: Capillarian Crest: Live: Studio: Hail to Fire: Ghost of Karelia: Mother Puncher: Discuss.
FUCK YES! A thread on Mastodon finally! These guys kick some serious ass. You can barely understand what Brent is singing half the time but it's still awesome.
favorite band right now and have been for some time I've seen them live 3 times now as well I have to say they're one of the few, probably the only, band I'd like to actually meet and chat with

Would be fun to chat it up with them.

Brent was talking about carving this awesome totem pole type thing in his front yard with a chainsaw, with the sun in his eyes and while suffering from horrible vertigo. And on Slayer's Unholy Alliance dvd he said he rakes his leaves to Reign in Blood. So, I think he'd probably be the most interesting one to talk to.
yeah I've actually seen them on each album tour minus remission so it's been cool to see them 'evolve' so-to-speak first hand
I'd love to see them live, I've seen some of their performances on youtube and they seem pretty awesome.
hmm. im usually vociferously against metal in all its forms, but i appreciate these guys. they look like they make the kind of music they love, and i dig that.
YES, mastodon is unbelievable. I need to get a hold of their other albums. All i have is crack the skye and leviathan and they are both amazing.
I think there was a thread, but it sank to the bottom of the music forum. [editline]25th October 2010[/editline] not complaining about this thread though
mastodon is my religion

Making of blood mountain was awesome.
<3
It was inevitably going to happen so I might as well be the one to do it... What's everyone's favourite Mastodon album? It'd have to be Crack the Skye for me.
blood mountain > leviathan > crack the sky > remission > call of the mastodon > jonah hex bullshit
God I love these guys
I mentioned in the OP that Leviathan is my favourite album with them.
There used to be an oooooold thread about these guys. Got into them a couple years ago, still love 'em, hence my name. Also if you like Call of the Mastodon, you guys should check out Today is the Day's In the Eyes of God. It features Brann Dailor and Bill Kelliher, and it's a bit more extreme. I got it for my birthday yesterday and it kicks ass.

My god this band is AWESOME. They came here some time last year, but I didn't go cos I didn't know who they were. Really wish I went, I fucking love them now.
Troy looks like a Heavy Metal Cavemen, which is awesome.
Saw them live with Slayer. The mixing was pretty shit and they seemed to have this annoying "rockstar" presence that annoyed me, but it wasn't too bad. Apparently one of the guitarists got into a fight with a local bartender after the show. Their bassist is their only good singer live. When I saw them, their other guitarist was sick and ended their show early. Fucking blew chunks. Otherwise they're pretty good stoner/sludge metal.
I saw them live with Dethklok headlining, was alright. I was really digging the guitars but the vocals weren't in my taste, also there music videos they had playing where confusing as fuck.

Mastodon can't really sing live.

I'm mistaken, this was back 3 years ago http://powerlinead.wordpress.com/2009/04/29/will-brent-hinds-of-mastodon-confront-his-attacker-again/

Brent is always wasted but they were pretty much dead on with everything both times I saw them, and either way, they are just crushingly epic live
Holy shit what FUCKKKKK MY LIFE THAT IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE ALBUMS EVER :emo:
Interesting op, I'm going to give them a listen, here's hoping I like what I find.
love the crack the skye and their other stuff. saw mastodon last year with dethklok and they were awesome just as expected
