I browse this thread to look at all the cool stuff everybody makes, but lately there has been more arguing than art.
fucking chains
I browse this thread to look at all the cool stuff everybody makes, but lately there has been more arguing than art.
and there is nothing more fucking useful than someone pointing that out ta mate seriously
I browse this thread to look at all the cool stuff everybody makes, but lately there has been more arguing than art.
Not really though.
Probably going to be flamed into obilivion, but hell. I never draw anything digital or on paper but today I decided to give digital drawing in photoshop a try, no trackpad just a 5$ mouse. So what do the real artists think of my first-ever drawing and I'm sure I can use tons of tips for my future drawings.
i'd try to do some studies and understand the form of objects first rather than trying to paint the perfect line-art straight away. not sure how possible this is without a tablet though ditch the overly obvious paper textures. a muted background colour would be better
What if I did something like this for the bottle?
Looks neat The main issue is still composition
What if I did something like this for the bottle?
i know someone who would really like this poster. when it's finished, will you be giving away the full-rez image via pm?
Looks neat The main issue is still composition
It's a bit better than before right? I changed a few things around (nothing major) but I'm not sure how else to improve it. If you want to edit the image or draw some arrows or whatever to help me that would be nice. I don't really know what else to do. I'm just gonna redo the liquid and bubbles in the bottle for now and see how it looks with it done right.
i know someone who would really like this poster. when it's finished, will you be giving away the full-rez image via pm?
haha, this is the full rez actually, but I could easily go back and just convert everything to vectors and increase the resolution I guess. How big would it have to be though? I'm not sure how prints work tbh. E: Would it be for like an actual poster?

How are you printing? You could screen print that design quite easily given that there are only a few colours [editline]27th February 2012[/editline]

Lighting on the foreground objects could use some work - there's not much to tell us what the surfaces are. Firelight would light up that dude a bit more evenly - less rim lighting, I think. Otherwise I really like that landscape. Adventurous colours
I would like to say that mako was being too blunt and rude, but what the fuck detlef. You're sounding like one of the monthly newbies we get that always gets butthurt at critique, you are better than that. No one is giving you shit, your work is NOT VARIED in the subject of anatomy and for you to say "oh the only reason is because it is guys" is bullshit. I could give less of a flying fuck if it has a dick or a vagina, it is about growing as an artist and if you expect to get through art school just painting the same god damn dudes then you are in for a rude awakening. So to be honest, I have stopped taking shit from you who can be extremely rude in your critique, then you cover your ass whenever someone makes a similar critique towards you, saying they are attacking your work. Start working out of your comfort zone and learn different body types as that is the only way youre going to grow as an artist. For you to simply say "no, you guys are wrong, my art is varied" is the most self righteous and ignorant thing you have ever said in my eyes and it takes away all sympathy you could have gotten from me. So stop bitching, and use the great potential you have and GROW. http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=174792 Here is a link with 3 oil tutorials that will help improve your work, you can read them or totally disregard this post, I could give less of a damn now after you pulled that fit.
So she spends days making a massive guest comic for RA, something that's quite different and varied, and afterward she rewards herself by drawing one of her new new characters, in a totally new and different medium than shes ever done before and ur complaining about it most people here do mostly the same thing they always do. i always make beige posters, most of you keep drawing the same looking women, that one guy keeps drawing the same looking boring landscapes with ladies (although to be fair we told him to try something else). i dont understand why you would be so aggressive about detlef drawing other things. tbh i think people should be allowed to draw whatever they want, within reason, and this is very much within reason [editline]27th February 2012[/editline]
I browse this thread to look at all the cool stuff everybody makes, but lately there has been more arguing than art.
i think 1chains1 causes more drama than detlef ever would
okay [editline]27th February 2012[/editline] bit late but i guess you're doin your thing lol
Rusty, the fact that people do it doesn't mean it's good to do. In fact, people should make a deliberate effort not to do it. Often.
i'm not saying it's good, but at the end of the day, people have stuff they like and prefer to draw. detlef branches out about as much as anyone here branches out, i'm just opposed to her or anyone else being singled out for something most or all people too are guilty of. but you can't say she doesn't do anything else. just LOOK at her da, it's full of other shit. but the point is, let people draw their guilty pleasures, so long as they draw other stuff too (which they do) instead of trying to rile up drama that is totally unnecessary
i dont want to take sides and i think both sides have good points, but to detlefs defense: i dont think its at all bad to stick to drawing things you know when trying out a new medium. the experimentation is with the new medium so why needlessly complicate that with subject matter you havent explored before
It is always hard for anyone to take critique on their work, because it is THEIR work and they put time and heart into it. I remember when I first started posting stuff in the creative threads I was angered by what Detlef and sometimes Rusty had to say, but I realized that their opinions however vague or "rude" (which at a time they were) were probably right and I had to keep working on it. Detlef for sure has improved in that regard and Rusty was only saying what was true. I am always surprised that people take things so seriously over the internet. In the end if you like something that you have done, that is what matters because you will always find a critic if you look.
Here's a work in progress drawing I'm doing. The can is obviously not finished but the camera is basically there. Sorry for the crappy image quality.
I dunno, its hard to look at someone's work and try to critique it without putting in your biased opinions of what "good" art is. I mean, whenever I look at people's work and try to critique it I always have other better artists and artworks in mind, but that's not really a good way of going about critiquing someone's work once you think about it. Everyone has different styles of drawing and whatnot, so you can't really criticize someone's work if you have a different style of drawing in mind or like something completely different than what the artist likes to draw. This might sound dumb to some of you, but I find most of Detlef's art to be lacking emotion most of the time. I just don't find most of her drawings all that interesting, yet they're still amazingly well done and I doubt I'll be able to draw that good any time soon, but it's just that they don't seem appealing to me. For example, I think these are amazing [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26795535/self.png[/t][t]http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/100/f/7/stale_semi_realism_by_luna133-d3doxqh.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/iwX5y.png[/t] [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26795535/shuffle.png[/t] yet things like the oil paint, the RA comics, and most of the other pieces I just don't find as appealing, yet they're still good. Criticizing someone's style is a bit dumb, but it's hard not to do. I don't see what the subject really has to do with it though. I couldn't care at all if every single one of your drawings were pretty boys or whatever as long as they had emotion and value like those^. I dunno if you guys know alicexz on deviantart but she's definitely one of my favorite artists there and she pretty much always draws the same things yet her use of color, values, composition, and shapes is crazy good. I just think you can look at any one of her pieces and immediately feel some sort of emotion you know? That's usually what I think makes a "good" art piece. It just needs to have a certain atmosphere to it. [t]http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/193/6/d/a_familiar_taste_by_alicexz-d3no7gk.jpg[/t][t]http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/307/c/6/wasp_by_alicexz-d4f0t1s.png[/t][t]http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/319/9/9/katniss_by_alicexz-d4g9wtn.png[/t] [t]http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/288/1/b/virtuoso_by_alicexz-d48qgre.jpg[/t]
I simply think people are overly aggressive at Detlef and Detlef tends to be overly defensive. I think both sides makes good points. Why is Detlef hacked at for drawing boys? Most people here draw women, and women only, so why is it bad to see someone drawing some goddamn boys? Are you guys closet homosexuals in denial? Sticking to similar kind of art or subjects is completely normal. We all have something we are better at, a speciality. Being the "Jack of All Trades" (like I want to be in media) isn't really the best solution, it causes mediocrity or "good" skills in all fields instead of excellence in one field. It's important to step out of the comfort zone at times and challenge yourself, but people tend to say that when someone has made similar things 3 times, which is, nothing. Let people do what they enjoy doing, doing something you don't like will only cause bad art, or forced good art (art that is technically good but lacks feeling). (not to be used as a defense for not learning critical knowledge like anatomy) When it comes to critiquing Detlef I get the feeling that people jump the gun instantly on Detlef. Now the reason I think people do that is because Detlef tends to be quite defensive about her stuff whilst critiquing others like most people do here and tell them to stop being so defensive that she is herself. See, people are overly aggressive against Detlef the moment they get the chance to be because Detlef is a bit hypocritic, so Detlef (naturally and understandably so) gets defensive because people are stupidly mean to her and it causes a vicious circle.
I dunno, its hard to look at someone's work and try to critique it without putting in your biased opinions of what "good" art is. I only like the colours in the violin piece there, the rest gives me this "hipster" split-tone feeling. I feel like Detlef does really really good lightning rendering and gives the works a really good atmosphere, but most of the time I can't FEEL it. But how do you critique and give constructive feedback on that? Beats me. I think it will come with development, just by keep aiming to get better as always and keep having a passion for doing art for the sake of art.
[t]http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/193/6/d/a_familiar_taste_by_alicexz-d3no7gk.jpg[/t][t]http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/307/c/6/wasp_by_alicexz-d4f0t1s.png[/t][t]http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/319/9/9/katniss_by_alicexz-d4g9wtn.png[/t] [t]http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/288/1/b/virtuoso_by_alicexz-d48qgre.jpg[/t]
i dont feel very much emotion from these which i think can be very subjective, just because someone's work doesn't feel emotive to you doesn't mean they may not feel emotive to somebody else. you clearly feel emotion from these works where i feel none, so I think that proves it's a highly subjective criteria. [editline]27th February 2012[/editline] also also, isnt the whole point of art being able to draw whatever you want?? free expression and stuff. people telling you to stop drawing a certain thing, especially if you like drawing it, kind of defeats the point of ART now don't say this applies to cc, because that only ccs what the person drew, and how to draw what they drew better. it doesnt mean 'draw something else entirely'.
How about, instead of getting angry over subject matter, you critique the art like an adult.
[t]http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/193/6/d/a_familiar_taste_by_alicexz-d3no7gk.jpg[/t][t]http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/307/c/6/wasp_by_alicexz-d4f0t1s.png[/t][t]http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/319/9/9/katniss_by_alicexz-d4g9wtn.png[/t] [t]http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/288/1/b/virtuoso_by_alicexz-d48qgre.jpg[/t]
Well I feel that emotion is definitely derived from the face and they're not exactly doing anything special other than staring at something. It would be nice if it was something else, the colors are definitely nice, satisfactory and they also "pop out".
May we please get back to the Art? Thank you.
May we please get back to the Art? Thank you.
We're discussing art and how to handle it. Learn to appreciate it because you will see it a lot in here. Just ignore it if it bothers you too much.
Holy shit, just came back to see over 750 notifications today. Guess what just happened? Gotta love retroactive DD a year after a drawing's done. :V Time to get back to pixelart. Unfinished but still cool.
On one side of the coin, there isn't anything wrong with what to draw. Some, if not most, of us are not even art professionals. I am a PhD candidate in computer scientist, for instance. I believe most of us draw because we want to do so. Art, music, and etc. should be a process that is enjoyable. Draw what we want, draw what we need. Of course, if we want to improve, we have to try different things. However, if we only want to relax, like drawing when we have a break or want to relief some stress, we should just draw what we want to draw. On the other side of the coin, If we want to improve, then take in criticism peacefully. This is not an art defense place, this is where you post some creative shit that doesn't deserve a thread. We all post our shit here, if some of them stinks, people are gonna call them out. If you don't wanna people tell you your shit stinks, then don't post it here. Post on deviantART only if you want people to praise your work. As long as the comment is to make your shit smell nicer with no mal-intent, it's a valuable information. If you can make your shit stink less by adapting the comment, then you are golden. As for comments, Comments like "Your shit smell like shit" means absolutely nothing. Comments like that is more trivial than the shit that is posted. We know they are shits, that is exactly why we post here. I post boring landscapes with the same damn woman on top, some post boring posters that looks almost identical, some post boring weapons, some posts boring gals, some post boring guys... etc. We are all boring, and we are all bored, that is why we are on the internet in the first place. So, face it, people, post more shits, talk more about the shits, and argue less.
Menu background image for a dungeon crawler my friend and I are working on. I normally paint hard surface, so this is new terrain for me. I'm blocking in values for the troll, and I think i'll change his cuirass to leather. I'll have to make the adventurer's chest come out a bit more, and clean up the troll's hand. Also that hole in the composition is for the menu title and GUI. [editline]26th February 2012[/editline] Shit, troll's right leg is fubar
