[editline]13th August 2011[/editline] It's a quote from 40K.
Yes, I thought about just naming the thread "Let's play Dark Heresy [CYOA] but it doesn't quite catch your eye, so I went with a quote that fits the imperial guard so well. It also stands out more. =)
Fire bombs!
Ok, let's hope to god you grabbed the trinket before. Go and get a pint, and then go to the gun store. Maybe with your smooth talking, you could get a good deal. [editline]13th August 2011[/editline] Then, bring the pint to your mate the gunsmith. Maybe he'll let you have a deal as well.
Ok, let's hope to god you grabbed the trinket before.

You decide to quickly grab the trinket and run out of the store, not looking back.
980.257.M39 T-19.5 hours The marketplace Guryan Segmentum Pacificus After some careful thought you decide that it would be a good idea to improve your shotgun. Prefereably of the kind that improves your chances of surviving melee. The walk to Hals Gunstore is about 10 minutes or so, the building itself looking like a fortress with only a few smaller windows protected by steel grating and a huge door that looks like it could withstand a melta bomb. You knock on the door. First three fast knocks, then one heavy knock, and later two knocks. The door is opened by a giant man you've come to know as just "Big Ben", a man towering at almost two and a half meter tall. He grunts at you and you enter, with him closing the door behind you. "Well if it isn't Cain, how are you you old fragger? Are you shipping out tomorrow?" Hal steps out of the shadows and you notice a big grin on his face. "Hal you son of a grox, it's been a long time!" You reply before nodding, saying that he is correct. You ask him what he's got for you, and he smiles slyly before picking up a small box from the floor. "This my friend, is an exterminator. It's just like one of those hand flamers you've probably seen, but it's a one-shot business. Really handy if you ever need to clear out a room or if you've run out of ammo in your rifle and the enemy is still there. I also have this" He says as he picks up something enveloped in a filthy rag. It's a melee attachment that looks like it could fit a shotgun. "This one you just screw onto your rifle and you can put a knife or anything else thats pointy." He looks you over, noticing how surprised you are. "Impressed huh? I usually wouldn't sell anyone an exterminator, but I'll make an exception for you my friend." "So how much do you want for them both?" You ask. "You can have them for 55 thrones, a really good price considering what it is." He responds. "I'll take them. Do you happen to have any fire bombs in stock?" You ask, and he nods. "I'll take two of those then." You say. 980.351.M39 D-day Boras Minor Segmentum Ultima The drop pod was speeding down the atmosphere of Boras Minor, an imperial world in the Segmentum Ultima-sector of the empire. You didn't know what this planet was, and you didn't care. The only thing you knew was that there were heretics on the ground and- The drop pod shakes violently as flak pounds the outer armour of it, these bastards meant business! "Drop in 10, 9, 8" a soothing female voice counted down. This is it, landfall! The drop pod shakes once more before becoming eerily calm. "On your feet soldiers, lock and load!" The vox radio crackles as the doors open. A cracking noise and you rush out, ready to deliver the emperors wrath! There is fighting going on everywhere around you, you look to your sides and you notice a group of three men, dressed in rags charging at you with their weapons over their heads! You try to remember your training as you let loose two shots from your shotgun. They both go wide, hitting either the ground or the air. Blast it! You stumble as you try to get two new shells into the chamber and the men gets closer. The men gets finally up close and swings their swords at you, but they all miss as you dodge them. You roll around and squeeze the trigger again, but the shots do not hit their intended targets. What the frag is wrong with this shotgun?! The men do not stop in their furious pursuit and this time they connect their swords, hitting the chestpiece of your flak armour. The blades doesn't even make a scratch, praise the emperor! You quickly try to stab one of the men, but it doesn't quite connect, only scratching one of the men. He first looks at the wound, then at you. He smiles and screams out before taking a swing at your own arm, and a burning sensation sweeps through your body as the blade cuts a huge gash in your left arm. "You shall be purged by his fire!" You yell out and fire the exterminator. It hits one of the men square on and he's catch ablaze, the other two men dodges your feeble attempt. One of the men, now clearly worked up in a frenzy jumps you with his sword, cutting up your left thigh. You let out a loud scream and in retaliation you thrust your shotgun with its melee attachment at the enemys head, nearly tearing his neck in two! Another trooper jumps the other man, knocking him down and bashes his chest before being thrown away from him. The heretic who was set ablaze lets out one last blood curling scream before falling down silent for the last time. "In the name of the emperor, die! You shout as you take another stab at the heretic who has so severely wounded you, piercing his chest. The man falls down almost immediatly, and your friend seems to have smashed in the head of his enemy. You try to get your bearings, blood gushing from your leg and arm. The pain is almost overbearing, but you have a goal to accomplish before you can even think about resting. You don't recognize your friend, but he looks at you, as if he's not sure what to do. The voxradio crackles to life and a corporal from your batallion is requesting immediate backup. He's reporting some fierce fighting due west of your position. You look to your comrade who is clearly frightened, and you look up ahead. A flak cannon is still tearing up the sky. After some careful thought, you decide to... Push on forward, the flak cannon needs to be silenced before it can shoot down any more drop pods! or... Head on over and provide support to your batallion-mates. We got badly wounded and our exterminator is used up, the melee attachment came to really good use though! Earned 25 xp for surviving our first encounter with the enemy, we're pretty close to death now but we can softspend two fatepoints to regain 2d5 wounds if we want to.
Yer an Imperial Guardsman. And Guardsmen are meant to be spent, not reserved. Squeeze those fate points and go into the breech, if your mates don't survive then the Emperor wasn't with them.
980.351.M39 D-day Boras Minor Segmentum Ultima "Alright, here's what we're going to do." You tell the other soldier, a man who appears to be in his mid 20's, physically fit and with hair as black as the void. "We're going to push on, and seize our objective. The emperor willing and the corporal will find the strength to lead his men to victory, we have to silence that flak or many more of our men will die." The man nods in approval, and you get on your feet. You ignore the pain, muttering prayers to the emperor to show you how to carry on your task. "Emperor", you mutter under your breath, "Show me your omnipotence, give me the strength to carry on." As you draw closer, the deafening roar of the flak cannon makes it near impossible to speak. The cannon is now about 20 meters away, and it's time to crawl closer to get within throwing range. You take a deep breath, and start to crawl closer. There is two crewmen operating it, and one... no, two guards nearby. They have their backs turned to you, oblivious to the creeping death getting closer to them. Just as you're about to throw the fiery death towards your enemies a shot whistles by you. Blast it, your comrade is too eager! The flak cannon turns silent and starts to turn towards you! You toss the firebomb, hitting the sweet spot! The two crewmen catch ablaze, but the cannon is still moving! "The two guards, still recovering from the shock of the blast, shoot haphazardly toward you and your friend. Your friend replies by sending a salvo of shots that strike the two dazed guards. You try to get closer, noticing the cannon has stopped moving. There is smoke rising from the flak cannon, giving off a scent of charred flesh. The guards doesn't seem to notice you as they exchange fire with your friend, who finally manages to hit one of the guards in the head! The lasfire melts a big hole in his head, a pretty nasty sight. The other guard is now shouting in some emperor-forbidden tongue, jumping up on the sandbags covering the area near the cannon and pops off two shots, both striking your friend! Standing alone, the man seems confident in his victory. He stands silent for a few seconds, before shouting again. This time he has a certain tone to his voice, as if he's mocking the dead. He doesn't get a chance to do that for long, as another lasfire strikes him in his stomach. The force of the impact, or maybe the shock from getting hit causes him to spin around wildly, letting off a shot before falling silent for the last time. Looking around, you don't seem to notice any other guards. Good. Your comrade rushes over to you, checking to see if you're still alive. He helps you up, the pain in your body isn't as intense as you'd thought it would be, but you're still hurting pretty badly. "What squad are you with?" You ask the man. "120th Buran rifles, we scattered all over the place and the emperor knows where the rest of them are." he replies. You try to get your bearing, various banners fly all over the place, you spot the 81th to the west. To the north you can see the 1st engineer squadron, and to your east you spot the 43rd. The man looks to you, clearly expecting you to lead the way. You decide to... Rally up with the 81st. or... Help the 1st engineer squadron. or... Join up with the 43rd. You're not entirely sure what the task of each squadron is. I'd also like to remind you that the more intricate the plan you write out the better I might let the outcome be, and doing things in unconventional ways might give us more experience if we manage to pull it off. Don't be afraid to debate what to do!
Join up with the 43rd!
Join the Engineers. They're always fun to be with.
Gotta love 40k. I'm not sure I have time for this currently as I have some other writing projects but I wish you guys the best of luck and I'll be watching this thread/reading for some hopefully cool stories.
Help the 1st engineer squadron, perhaps once you've assisted them, they might be able to operate the flak cannon to your advantage.
Gotta love 40k. You tell your comrade. "We're going to link up with the 1st engineers, they are the ones closest to us." The man, who said his name was Gaius looks at you and nods. He's built like a miner, long strong arms and wide shoulders, and his eyes are just as black as the hair on his head. There is a certain smell around him, as if he hasn't washed for weeks. Nonetheless, he's a pretty good shot. "Let's move out." As you make your way north, you decide to snatch one of the las carbines from one of the guards, and two charge packs. You're thrown offguard by the light weight of the carbine, in contrast with your shotgun it feels as light as a feather. You look around, the world you've landed upon is an agricultural world and wide fields spreads as far as the eyes can see, with a few houses spread out here and there. You're not sure what time it is, but it's right above your head so you assume it's around noon. the jog takes about 5 minutes, and you finally arrive at the 1st engineers. A dropship has crashed there and the men are working hard to get any survivors out of the burning wreck, with others placing out sandbags in a halfmoon around it, from west to north to the east. "You there!" A sergeant shouts, "Get over here and prepare yourself, we're expecting the enemy to-" He's cut short by a loud cracking noise. The sergeant is hit! Blood is spraying out of his neck and he gurgles something incoherent before falling down to the ground. A sniper! Another sergeant snaps to it and shouts out orders for everyone to ready themselves. To the north you spot a large mob, armed with a wide array of weapons. Another loud crack fills the air, this time it strikes a soldier between the eyes. "Somebody take out that sniper!" The sergeant screams, the large mob is getting closer, and the men start firing wildly at the approaching crowd. "He's over there!" Gaius shouts and points towards a set of buildings to the west. It looks like a church of some sort, about 200 meters away. "We need to take care of him or he'll wipe us all out!" Another soldier screams. You decide to... Stand by your post and deal with the approaching horde. The sniper can be taken care of after you've dealt with the much more present threat. or... Take care of the sniper. He's a big threat to everyone if left unattended, and needs to be taken care of as soon as possible.
Order Gaius to stay at the post and offer whatever support he can, while you go after the sniper, the sniper might kill off the rest of the 1st engineer squadron before the horde even gets there.
I have to say, you people should use the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer as toilet paper or a throwing weapon. It's useless.
980.351.M39 D-day Boras Minor Segmentum Ultima "Sir, I'll take care of this sniper." "Ultha, Jorgmund, go with this trooper and take care of this sniper!" The sergeant shouts out. "Gaius, I need you to provide some covering fire as we make our way to that tower, is that clear?" Gaius nods and you get a quick look on the troopers who'll follow you to take out the sniper. One of them is a large female, much taller than you and with a physique you didn't even know was possible for a female to have! She has short, gray hair and her face twitches. She looks old and weary. The other trooper is a man who looks awfully bland, as if he's almost invisible. "On me, let's take care of this sniper!" You shout and double-time it towards the sniper. You rush with great haste, dodging between cover as you speed across the field. The sniper keeps shooting at you but seems to miss every shot he makes. Clearly the emperor is smiling at you! About 50 meters from the building you all fall down behind a large stone wall. "Ultha, Jorgmund, I want you to dose this heretic with everything you got! I'll try and flank him, and give him a dosage of this" You draw your shotgun, making sure its loaded. "Cover me!" You shout as you quickly jump over the wall. The window is being peppered as you make the last 50 meters to the building. You're exhausted, but you have to push on or your buddies are going to die. The door is wide open, you take a quick look inside. The room is filled to the brim with dead corpses. The stench is too much and whatever breakfast you had this morning is now on the ground. "The sick fucks, I will give smite them in the name of the emperor!" You mutter to yourself as you steel yourself before entering. As you rush up the stairs you hear less of the firing outside. Are your friends dead? What happened? With increased fervour you rush up the stairs, and not before long you come upon a door. This must be where the heretic has locked himself in! You make a push to the door, it doesn't budge. Bracing yourself you try again, and this time you break through. You're welcomed by a loud crack, but the bullet goes wide. "In the name of the emperor, die!" You scream and shoot blindly into the room. There is a silence as the dust settles. "Balfalu 'r bariaeth!" The sniper jumps you, and only with mere milimeters does he miss. You're taken completely by surprise and fire your shotgun again, but all it does is tear a hole in the cloak of the heretic. The man swings his sword wildly, hitting your flak armour again and again. It is only after a while that you manage to get the upper hand by kicking him square in the chest before you impale him with your shotgun. The heretic lets out one last shout, "'r hymerawdwr ydy farw!" before falling completely silent. You thrust him in the chest a couple more times, just to make sure he's dead. "He's dead!" You scream before peeking outside the window. The view is astounding, in the far distance large explosions shatter the ground. Must be basilisks pounding the heretics, or at least you hope so. It's silent, almost too silent. You can see the men of the 1st engineers, only a handful seems to be alive but at least they seem to have managed to survive the vicious onslaught. "Ultha? Jorgmund? Are you alive?" You scream. Jorgmund peeks up from the wall. "I'm fine, but Ultha is hit badly!" We managed to kill the heretic sniper, the sight of the slain corpses was too much and we gained 2 insanity points from that, but the successful encounter means +50 xp to us. We'll be heading back to the 1st engineers, but first I'll let you decide if we head back right away or if we take a look around the place. Your call!
before you impale him with your shotgun.
Wait what.
Wait what.
The shotgun has a melee attachment, effectively making it a spear. =)
Take a look around, search the snipers corpse. You might find something valuable or maybe something to help your allies with.
Pick up the heretic's sniper rifle and head back to support what's left of the 1st engineer squadron, perhaps if you survive all of this after the battle's over, you might be able to get the sniper rifle purified. And throw away the trinket you picked up at the shop, it seems to be affecting your shotgun's chance to hit.

980.351.M39 D-day Boras Minor Segmentum Ultima Ultha is hit pretty badly, with her arm being torn into shreds near the elbow. She's breathing, but she is knocked out cold. "You take her back and double-time it, this emperor-forsaken sniper will not claim another life!" You bark out the order, "I'll snoop around, see if there are any more enemies around." Jorgmund nods and picks her up. You dread thinking about what could've caused this madness, could it be forces of chaos in the working? You enter the church once again, deciding to look around for anything out of the ordinary. The bodies lies in droves, stacked about 4-5 bodies high. They are all mangled up really bad, but most seem to have been slaughtered by conventional means, at least you think so, since they all seem to have suffered from blunt-force trauma and nothing unnatural. There is money lying around and you decide that you might as well take the money, it's not like they will have any use for it now. "And this piece of grox shit can protect you all" You snarl as you throw away the trinket you 'bought' back on your home planet. It hasn't done you any good so far, now has it? The room reeks of putrid and rotten corpses, if you hadn't thrown up earlier you surely would've done it now that the initial surge of adrenaline wears off. You decide to head up the tower again, the sniper might have some clues. Once you're up in the tower you look around. The body is still lying where it should be, good. The man doesn't seem to bear any taints of chaos, although he did speak some weird, foreign language. The sword is rusty and looks like it has seen its better days, but the sniper rifle he was using could maybe come to good use! It's pretty heavy, and you wonder how the scrawny-looking man could possibly have used it. There is a box of rounds lying in the corner of the room, around 13 bullets or so. You snatch it up before you head back to the 1st engineers. Some time later... "Bloody good job taking out that sniper, he surely would've killed us all if you hadn't taken care of him!" The sergeant looks at you. "The emperor needs more men like you. We've had some success on all fronts but we've been hit hard and most outfits are scattered or completely obliterated so for now on, you're with the 1st engineers. Dismissed!" You bring your haul to Gaius who is battered but alive. "So it looks like we're going to join up with these fellas from now on. I'm Aevon Malferus Cain." You both chat for a short while, exchanging information about your past lives. Gaius was born on an agricultural world just like this one, and had spent most of his life with the plow in front of him. He had not actually volunteered to join the imperial guard, but was forced to do so. He doesn't want to tell you why however. You try to push him into answering but you're cut short by the sergeant approaching you. He tells you both to fall in line and report to HQ in 5. The HQ is a large tent, capable of holding up to a thousand men. There is a holodeck in the middle, and men running around everywhere, all looking very busy. You fall in with the rest of the 1st engineers, or at least those who can stand. You spot Ultha. You can't seem to see what her arm looks like, and you can't quite make out her facial expression. "Gentlemen, we've just recieved orders to pack it up and prepare for the last push. The traitor heretic controlling this world has been found, and we aim to deliver the emperors wrath upon him with great vengeance. We the 1st engineers have been called upon to help breach his fortress, since we have no access to orbital bombardment and because we aim to catch this man alive so that he may answer for his crimes. We've come up with a plan however." The commanding officer says, hitting a button on the holodeck. It turns on, with the familiar sound of a portable generator providing electricity to it. "We have spotted a few central weak spots that, if we can deliever a few demolition charges to it blow up the outer wall, which would help the main assault tremendeously. I have spoken with the commissar and he have acknowledged this weak spot but our first and primary task is to help assist the main push where we will accompany the other regiments with means of scaling the walls and breaking into his fortress. It will be extremely dangerous and is a long-shot, but I believe it is possible, and that this would make our task in bringing the heretic in a lot easier." He shuts the holodeck down and looks on the rag-tag group of men before him. "So, five volunteers. The rest are dismissed, we will link up with everyone else in aproximiatly 36 hours so say your prayers and get some chow and rest. You will need it." Do you... Volunteer for this task, bringing down the walls with his fury? or... Dismiss, preparing for the final charge? Choose wisely, I'll get an update up on Sunday the 21st.
Volunteer, explosives are always a good thing.
