inkjets are superior compared to laser when it comes to printing quality work. a laser will easily beat them in time and quantity vs. ink, but the quality isn't comparable, and if you studygraphic design you want a nice quality printer

what model do you have?
HP Deskjet F4580 (all in one)
ahh, i used to have the HP Deskjet F4200 (also all in one) it did me fine though, can't say i ever had any major issues with it. what sort of problems are you having?
I've never used a good inkjet before, all the ones I've used have screwed up the colours and smeared all over the place.

This comic really fits this discussion: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/printers
you should'a seen me earlier managed to print out all of my portfolio bar one piece perfectly first time. got to this piece... it took me 8 times before it did it correctly. i'd already ripped up one bit of card in my rage.

probably when i get it whapped on my website! it's a joke, i've had webspace and domain for just under a year, and have never finished it. always get half way then change my mind about the design and forget about it all. ungh [editline]14th July 2011[/editline] or i might just upload it here. but i don't know what you'll all think, because it's not what i think a lot of you have in your mind as "graphic design". there's some branding (i.e. logos) but there's also some projects i think you'll go o_O at. but i won't know until i show, right? :v:
right :v:
So guys, i've got some questions. I've gone to school for a bit for "Graphic Design" but sadly it was at a community college. Not anything against Community College, but the courses were a bit limited. I learned a bit about everything really, but not a ton. I learned about photoshop, a bit about Illustrator, and a bit about printing and running a printing press. So, i was wondering where is a good site to maybe get some good starting points to take what i know further. Things about typography, logo design, things of that nature that would be helpful for getting more knowledge under my belt so that once i finish school this semester i can get started on making a better portfolio.
Sucks you had such a limited experience. I wonder how a community college managed to skip by such important design basics like Typography and logo designs? 2 years is plenty of time to squeeze instruction of that nature in. My community college design experience was pretty focued. Despite being a "2 year" program, it actually takes 3 years unless you take an extra class each quarter and don't have summers off. Covered pretty much everything from the basics to the programs and to finish off our big capstone project involved inventing a company from the ground up building an entire brand (all the logo design, signage, pictograms, vehicles, building design, etc) for the company. I should say though for my degree, in order to fit it all in within 2-3 years they didn't require me to take hardly any gen-eds other than 3 english, and a couple of other random ones. As such when I transfer to uni this fall I'm pretty much required to do a years worth of gen-eds to get my bachellors, which kinda sucks.

It's a smaller community college, so the guy who taught the class was super cool, and knew a good deal. But his knowledge was mostly in the printing field, as he worked at Missouri University, and other big printing companies doing stuff like proofing, and running the machines. But aside from asignments where we were told to pretty much use illustrator, or photoshop, or sometimes indesign to accomplish something, we really pretty much just went at it with the little bit he knew of the programs, and what we gathered from the internet. I guess now's as good a time as any to start re-learning.

Well, I guess I haven't really dumped any of my stuff here. Some is from 2 years ago, some is from this year. Anti-religion, Kunst & Håndverk brochure and Creation Awards is collaborations with other students. (In the brochure I was first and foremost the photographer) [thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/RusseRevy.jpg[/thumb][thumb][/thumb][thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/Poster.jpg[/thumb][thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/Redesign.jpg[/thumb][thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/Anti-Religion.png[/thumb] [thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/Hum%C3%B8%C3%B8rspredere.png[/thumb][thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/Tee.jpg[/thumb][thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/Elgesem.png[/thumb][thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/Brosjyre.jpg[/thumb][thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/CDProject.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/MotSketchy.png[/thumb][thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/GDItSketch.png[/thumb][thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/%C3%98letikett.jpg[/thumb][thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3655193/Gullik%20relatert/Grafisk/CreationAwards.png[/thumb] I did not expect the thumbnails to be so fucked up. I guess it would hurt to put a little of my recent stuff up here. CMYK tends to get the colors fucked up when displayed by browsers, make a copy of the image and switch it in photoshop to RGB.
It was made in CMYK right? CMYK tends to get the colors fucked up when displayed by browsers, make a copy of the image and switch it in photoshop to RGB.
Yeah that fixed it, thanks bro.
You can now :)
I would just like to point out that Alcapwne was kind enough to provide his logo for free. He really did us a huge favor! I would also like to thank the rest of you guys who made logos. Really nice of you and I'll be sure to forward people to this thread in the future when they are in need of logos/banners.
Here is some of my most recent work. I've just started working in InDesign, and am building up a portfolio for sac state. These images are from a magazine (unpublished) that I created. okay so uhm yes this is some of my work! not quite sure what you'll think of it... it's not really logos or what some of you think graphic design has to be, but we cover a lot of bases on my course and i like that we do a lot of stuff. okay here goes! no.1 wind right, this project was to help us 'explore mark-making'. yeah, it was run by one of our alternate tutors and we all fucking hated doing it, nonetheless i like my outcome. basically we had exercises for a couple of weeks to come up with 'marks' that visually described a wind. we were given a 3x A4 page list of winds and were told to set fourth and explore! we all thought this project was kinda bullshit (our tutor for this brief is actually from an illustration background, not graphics) but anyway, this was my piece. the wind is the kamikaza; the 'sickle wind' japan, cuts like a knife so here you have my 'mark' (which is actually a photo) [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19936378/port_drop/kamikaza_A3ed.jpg[/t] so the mark itself you're supposed to see the sickle shape (reference #1 sickle), when you look you realise it's a cut in card (ref #2 'cuts like a knife') and hopefully the 3rd reference you can see is that it looks like the japanese flag. so there's 3 references which take it from "wtf" to "oh okay cool" (hopefully!). the copy at the bottom is just advertising a (fake) series of lectures being held (the final piece for the brief was to create a poster advertising these lectures, using your 'marks'). i quite like this piece! okay no.2 penguin! [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19936378/port_drop/penguin.png[/t] originally the penguin is taken from a project we did last year, which was to create a set of 12+ visually consistent images on the subject of your choice. i've got a bunch of the animals saved somewhere around, but with this penguin i built the pattern around it up. and it also has the little 'fact'. i was going to use them as a set of posters advertising the WWF or something, my idea was that the patterns kinda look like mazes? like you get in kids books. and the text would say something like "Every year, hundreds of plant and animal species are being LOST to climate change". then i was gonna do a frog in green and it would be "LOST to deforestation" and i have an elephant in grey "LOST to illegal poaching". but i kinda lost hope with it. i like it as a stand alone piece although it doesn't really mean anything. for putting it in my actual portfolio i've put a little subtext at the bottom saying <-- that stuff but i didn't think i needed to show it here. no.3 spaghetti the brief was to take an item that is 'difficult' to package, and repackage it in a new and interesting way. i don't think my solution is particularly elegant or anything but it's kinda simple and quirky. meh [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19936378/port_drop/Untitled.png[/t] oh, and no i cannot draw spaghetti in photoshop! no.4 mantanani turtle if any of you know me fairly well you'll know i spent 3 months in borneo on my gap year before i started university. anyway, whilst we were there our camp manager on this island (mantanani) wanted me to design a sort of logo for them, so i did. they painted it on the side of the house, but i actually changed the design when i got back home, i think you'll agree it's an improvement on the first one. (but then the first one is painted on the side of a house on a tiny island off the coast of borneo, so that's cool, right? :v:) [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19936378/port_drop/mantanani_turtle.png[/t] this is the old design, on the house [t]http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/8532_131707772249_515442249_2457343_3192664_n.jpg[/t] also can you see the KT in the back left flipper? thought i'd leave my little subtle mark! no.5 star map in this brief we were to work with words, and come up with a collective noun for a profession, and then explore this visually. i chose a constellation of astronomers as i've always been interested in astronomy, and then it all sorta led to this. originally i was going to get a big piece of dark blue/black acrylic and cut the holes out where the 'stars' are, and put little LED lights through so you could hang it on your wall/ceiling and it would look like the night sky... but i ran out of time and money and just did this instead. considering the amount of time i've spent on it i'm not really happy with the outcome, i know it could be a lot better, but i just don't have the energy to work on it any more. ah well, it was quite fun to do! [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19936378/port_drop/starmap_dark3.png[/t] no.6 typeface this was a cute little project we did in 1st year. our second ever project actually. the brief was just to make a face using only letters from your initials. this piece kinda haunts me as all of my course mates say it's the first thing they remember about me, ha. [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19936378/port_drop/panda_face.png[/t] no.7 white rabbit simple logo idea for a white tea company. i'd originally had this massive project that was all with alice in wonderland and the mad hatters tea party but i just got really lost in it all and this is the only "good" thing to come out of it. it's alright but there's not much too it [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19936378/port_drop/white_rabbit.png[/t] no.8 faces in places another short project in 1st year; to go and photograph a set of 'incidental' faces. it's not a big piece of work, but i think it'll be a nice little ice breaker at interviews. and the french curve face always cracks me up [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19936378/port_drop/faceinplaces.png[/t] no.9 blue point just another simple logo. it's for an oyster bar. bluepoints are a type of oyster hence the name and hopefully you can see the oyster in the B and the pearl in the i ? this was another lost cause really, it hasn't been pushed so it's just very basic. and everyone tells me it looks like a boob :c never mind, it was fun to do! [t]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19936378/port_drop/bluepoint.png[/t] soooo that's some of my work. i've got a couple of other pieces lying around but i'll sort that out some other time, i am tired from that. i hope that you like at least some of it :v: [editline]16th July 2011[/editline]

you've done really well to get the layout to follow the curve of the white here! but please, please, please don't hyphenate copy, it looks really unprofessional. otherwise i'm liking this, especially the 2nd and last ones

I'm a big fan of what you describe as 'visually consistent images' and the penguin looks amazing turtle logo is nice too, and the typeface thing is really good as well the other things aren't really the kind of designy stuff I like :(

It was place holder text, so I wasn't too worried about it. Unless it is real content, you know?
