A Miata is nice, but it isn't what I would advise a first-timer get. The sporty nature of the car is going to lead the driver into overdriving it far more than their natural tendency to do so.

I highly disagree... it's cheap as shit, easy to work on, and reliable. Gets great gas mileage, it's no supercar so a dumb kid isn't going to have enough power to do anything ridiculously stupid. They're incredibly difficult to flip without hitting something, and when loss of control occurs all they do is spin. It's safer than most cars you could get a kid, imo.

They're just starting out, they think they're invincible, and they have a sports car. They're going to barrel into a hairpin at 90MPH thinking "Olol, sports car, zing right around.". And then they're in a tree. The lack of power will have no bearing on this, Miatas can and will go fast enough to exceed the tires' capability to hold the road, and first-time drivers simply do not know how to handle a car when they get near the limit. Just look at how many teens manage to hit a tree in an 89HP CR-X. A second car? Sure. They're great cars, and someone with enough experience to know when they're approaching the limit will enjoy the hell out of one. I'm buying one myself once I have the steady income necessary to make the payments. But I would never give one to a teen who's license is still warm.
Personally I wouldn't give a RWD car to a new driver unless he had experience driving something else like a quad or a snowmobile

Or perhaps a four cylinder Ranger, S10, Colorado, or Frontier, altough they will have a donut problem with the pickups if/when it snows. The main reason I wouldn't hand a Miata to a first-timer is because it's a sports car, thus, they're going to want to take more risks than their skillset can handle. If they're in a boring ol' geography teacher's car, they're less likely to take wild and crazy risks.

One of my friends is an amazing driver and owns an 89 volvo 240 and during winter he has to put some weight in his trunk and even that isn't enough. If the lowest temperature you get during winter is ~0c go ahead with a RWD Volvo

My mom's minivan is absolutely fucking hopeless, try to go up the slightest of snowy hill and it just unloads the front wheels. My 1WD pickup is better in the snow. If you live where winters get harsh, 4WD is best. Which brings us back to the pickups I mentioned, pop those suckers in 4-lo, grab some proper M+S tires, and you can laugh in the face of snowfall. Besides, at 16 years old, the tires on their car are still on their parent's dime. If I had kids at that age you can bet good money I'd have a set of steelies with studded tires fitted stashed away in the garage somewhere. It may cost more, but knowing they have the most grip they can possibly have is worth it. Oh, and yes, studded tires are legal in Tennessee. Why I'll never know as we don't get ice often enough to justify buying them, but they are.

Any decent sedan that's FWD should work well with good tires. And pickups aren't exactly cheap on gas and when you purchase so for a first car they're not the best.

I learned to drive during wintertime. :v: After driving through flurries with 5-10ft of visibility and on entire roads with packed ice, I can safely say that winter doesn't have shit on me

You're making a generalization out of something that's already generalized. Whether it be a Miata, an Accord, an Altima, any first time driver in their first car is going to be stupid, is going to take risks, and over assess their ability. My first car was a Miata, and not once did I lose control of it. I drove more aggressively than I should have for my skill level, and took risks that tested the car's limits. I would have done the same in ANY car.

I don't know where is the fuss about "lolfirstcartrwdtaboY'allgonnacrash" My first car was a supra turbo, rwd. I still have it and never crashed it. Don't assume that new drivers are stupid because they are inexperimented, most make up in caution what they lack in experience

I plan on breaking into 14s, which isn't much but it's not bad for a stock D16A6 on some boost. I'm going to start a build thread soon, showing my progress towards race day. I'll take tons of pictures and stuff.
