Sorry Ice, you were offline so I had to.
I looked back a lot of pages and noticed there is no official thread (at least not recent) that is dedicated to my favorite band of all time. In here I will summarize the band from beginning to end, analyze each member and give those who haven't gotten the chance to listen to these gods the reason why they should listen, and how, because it isn't just finding a random Floyd song and press play.
-=HISTORY=-
[release]Pink Floyd was founded officially in 1965 and compromised of 4 members, Syd Barrett, Richard Wright, Nick Mason and Roger Waters. Before that, Waters and Mason had been performing together under a variety of band names, but after Barrett and Wright joined, they were called Pink Floyd. They released their first single, Arnold Layne in 1967, and their debut album Piper at the gates of Dawn later that year. Lead guitarist David Gilmour joined the band for the release of their second album, A Saucerful of Secrets. The album was an instant hit, but it was the last Floyd album to feature Syd Barrett. Barrett left the band in 1968. He became mentally ill and spent the rest of his life out in the country. Pink Floyd released loads of great albums, fx, Meddle, The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and The Division Bell. Roger Waters however claimed ownership of the band when they made The Wall, and tensions rose when he wrote an entire album, The Final Cut, dedicated to his father, much to Gilmour's dismay. The Final Cut is considered by many to be Roger's first solo album. Roger left the band after the release of The Final Cut, and Gilmour assumed leadership of the band. Gilmour and Mason together made the album Momentary Lapse of Reason, the first album without Waters. Wright was not a part of the official lineup of the album. Before dissolving, Pink Floyd, comprised of Gilmour, Mason and Wright, recorded their final album, The Division Bell. However, in 2005, the four bandmembers reunited for one show.[/release]
-=MEMBERS=-
[release]SYD BARRETT [thumb]http://www.opelproductions.com/archives/misc_pics/071206-syd_barrett.jpg[/thumb] Lead singer and guitarist from 1965-1968 before being replaced by Gilmour due to differences in the band. After he left the band recorded many songs and albums about Barrett, including Wish You Were Here, The Wall (Pink's insanity is mirrored to Barrett's insanity), The Dark Side of the Moon, and many songs, most known is Shine On You Crazy Diamond from Wish You Were Here. Barrett mainly played Fender guitars. DAVID GILMOUR [thumb]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KR_pZ6135Xc/Rvf_kbac4kI/AAAAAAAAAAM/oTJ7fbsVwas/s320/gilmour.jpg[/thumb] Gilmour replaced Barrett in 1968 and became lead guitarist and singer. He and Waters suffered differences with each other, and after Waters left the band in 1983, Gilmour wanted to write an album as an "in-your-face" to Waters. Gilmour favored Fender Stratocasters. NICK MASON Nick Mason was Pink Floyd's drummer from 1965-1994. RICHARD WRIGHT Richard Wright was Pink Floyd's keyboardist and backing vocalist. Roger Waters Roger was Pink Floyd's leader, bassist and primary songwriter for most of his tenure in the band. He left the band in 1983 after massive differences with Gilmour.[/release] FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T LISTENED TO FLOYD Never listened to Floyd have you? Well now would be a perfect time to start! If you're gonna listen to Floyd you kind of have to do it right. Some people are able to listen to song and song, but to catch the real essence and power of their songs, you have to listen to each individual album. Lime and limpid green...
A second scene
A friend of mine (who just so happens to be TheIceman) has tried to get me into this band for probably a year now. Well, I listened to The Dark Side of the Moon last night, and I'm currently listening to The Wall. I'm hooked.

No, I like this one better. [editline]5th July 2011[/editline] @ AK'z
But this OP was no effort :( Anyway, glad to have a new fan!
Most likely because I'm not trying to be pretentious :)
But this OP was no effort :( Anyway, glad to have a new fan!
Unlike that amazing OP you had before:
:)

Most likely because I'm not trying to be pretentious :)
Weirdo. :D
Weirdo. :D
Hypocrite :D
Look at the artwork I posted in mine. Psychedelic is how Floyd is meant to be presented. Not a bunch of boring text that noone will read. :smug:
I like how I managed to learn the guitar solo in "Mother" during my second listen of the song. [editline]5th July 2011[/editline]
Look at the artwork I posted in mine. Psychedelic is how Floyd is meant to be presented. Not a bunch of boring text that noone will read. :smug:
To be honest, I find it a bit annoying to look at.
And nobody is going to read the OP after the first page anyways. Also, Jonni, you should try to learn the end solo of Comfortably Numb. Its awesome.
And nobody is going to read the OP after the first page anyways.
Also that. Iceman made a fine OP in V1, and y'know, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. [editline]5th July 2011[/editline]
And nobody is going to read the OP after the first page anyways. Also, Jonni, you should try to learn the end solo of Comfortably Numb. Changed the OP a bit to make it easier to read and more organized
Changed the OP a bit to make it easier to read and more organized
Didn't make it less dull. :)
Didn't make it less dull. :)
Didn't make it burn the readers eyes either :)
Didn't make it burn the readers eyes either :)
That's the essence of psychedelia. :respek:
That's the essence of psychedelia. :respek:
No its the essence of wanting to be psychedelic and failing [sp]aka Akayz[/sp]
Guys, stop fighting. Let's just post in whatever Pink Floyd thread is at the top. No, actually let's not do that, that'll just get confusing.
Build a wall, have it between my psychedelic thread and this poor man's thread. Deal? [editline]5th July 2011[/editline]
land of confusion
Wrong thread. :)
Guys, stop fighting. Let's just post in whatever Pink Floyd thread is at the top.
Build a wall, have it between my psychedelic thread and this poor man's thread. Deal?
All the people would run from your side to mine before the [del]berlin[/del] wall will be complete.
Why do I get the feeling that you're both oozing with Pink Floyd puns and references and I'm not getting them because I'm outside the wall?
Why do I get the feeling that you're both oozing with Pink Floyd puns and references and I'm not getting them because I'm outside the wall?
Don't worry, you'll start to get 'em in time. For now, just have a cigar and enjoy the gravy train ride.
there be no saucerful of secrets over here, tell you that. :smug:
Ok, leaving for work in 5 minutes. I have DSoTM, The Wall, Animals, Meddle and Wish You Were Here on my iPod. Which should I listen to whilst in work doing work stuff?
