• Photoshop Signature Work.

Been working with Photoshop for awhile now. Just like to receive some CC on my signature works. I really suck with text, so expect none of them to have text in them. Thanks, -Slippery-Q Newest - Oldest:
No matter how much I despise them, those are really bland. Here are a few examples from an old forum I used to visit. Any specific ideas on how I can improve besides posting other signatures?
Any specific ideas on how I can improve besides posting other signatures?
Not making them at all. Other than that, less sharpening rape, less brushes, more similar colours, less mess, more composition.
Excellent job posting them on a forum that doesn't have any signatures
What is the utility of this kind of signature?
To show how cool you are through a stupid little picture.
Not making them at all. Other than that, less sharpening rape, less brushes, more similar colours, less mess, more composition.
Don't use brushes at all other than clipping masks. So that's out of the question. You're going to have to forgive me on the colors, I suffer from a form of color blindness, so it may affect some of my works to a degree. The other issues you put, I will work on. @Habsburg: Does it really matter? It's artistic, so it can be critiqued. I'm sure you guys have signature artists here too, even though they don't post signatures. So I'm sure they could help me out with tips and what not, or just what I need to work on. Like with what dgg said above, though the, "Not making them at all." wasn't necessary.

There is no such thing as "signature artist". Just like there is no "banner artist" "commercial artist" "avatar artist" etc etc. The only good thing signatures bring with them is clogging up forums making them into a fucking mess. Which isn't really a good thing at all unless you're trying to kill it.
I could really achieve the same images just by dicking around photoshop. there is no artistry.
I can see your point with "clogging up forums making them into a fucking mess". But I do disagree with the "stupid pointless unimaginative crap.", which I'm sure you could really care less about. Anyways, signatures may not be the hardest thing to make, or even too useful, but it's still art.

Signatures are made to look "cool" and flashy. Signatures just take images from google search 95% of the time and throw lots of filter effects and colour adjustments on them just in order to make it look cool, contrasted and make it super sharp. There is nothing artistic about it. Say what you want about how vague "art" is and how something someone doesn't consider art is something someone else absolutely considers art. But signatures can't be art because that's not the point of signatures. The only way signatures could be art is if you were just making art on a wide small canvas. But then it wouldn't really be a signature, it would just be work done on a stupidly small canvas. And I made these horrible shitstains myself just so you know. It just all depends. Some of the sigs you see up there that I used I would consider "art" by your standards just because of the reason I made them. Such as the MK one with Cyrax and Smoke, I fucking love Mortal Kombat, so I made a MK sig for me to use. Or the Minecraft one, love the shit out of that game, and the Creeper, though they are asshole. Or even the fourth from the bottom, my favorite band of all time, Descendents. But then again, I can see where you are coming from with art needing a meaning behind it. I see a lot of people do that. Shit, even some of mine above were just for friends, and had no meaning behind the signature. But I'm not trying to rub you the wrong way or anything. I just wanted to receive a little CC on my work so I could enhance my sigs, and get a better output on the effects so I could give the sigs a little more depth to explain how I feel about them, but using the image itself. In a way, I could definitely agree with what you're trying to say, but at the same time, I'll hold my own views because not all signatures are not just made for the "sparkly factor", and could be made for a higher meaning.

It's a step process, first it may be signatures, then it may evolve into something more original and creative, etc, etc. Why not try to be constructive for once? OP what your signatures lack are consistency. For instance the minecraft one has different pixel sizes, which really is an eyesore. It also lacks the minecraft look to it, it looks like just a pixelized version of a bigger picture. And the Assassin one has a strange red abstract color to it, which isn't a bad concept, it just shouldn't be applied to that sort of thing. Most of the others have that bloom and lens flare generally aren't a good effect to have in anything. In my opinion you should stop trying to make signatures and work on the different aspects of art. Like creating something using no images from google or such.
Sorry, but a lot of those look like crops and filters.

People like them to use, and I don't mind making them for people. @Chezhead: They are. I don't like to use a lot of brushes and what not. Already using someone else's idea as the image itself, I think using someone else's brushes too takes even more away from the originality of the image. Like I said above, I'll really only use brushes for clipping masks, that's about it. The rest is cropping the image out, and screwing with layers and filters to get the effect.
I am a avatar artist and you should take me seriously. [editline]27th February 2011[/editline] would anyone like one of my magnificent pieces of art?
I was hoping this would die down. Seemed to be causing a problem or two.
Think before you post next time.
Weeelllll, I was thinking that I could receive some criticism. Don't get me wrong, I got that from a few. But it also seems I upset a few people by calling making a signature "art". If I had known some people would've taken that so serious, I wouldn't have started the thread to begin with.
Signatures are useless, rarely toutched by innovation or creativity. Playgrounds for 12yo'ds

"Fuck! I love these guys! Imma take som images off them and then throw a bunch of filters on them and MAN! YESES! THIS IS AWESOME AND REPRESENTS WHAT I LIKE!" That's not art. Art would be making a tribute image for that band/game, whatever. Something you made yourself from scratch. Not something you made by taking an image, then pressing some buttons, adjusting some sliders and erasing a bit here and there. With a meaning behind it I don't necessarily mean a message though. But a reason for making it, that isn't just "Boy I sure do like this", that's something that should just go along with it naturally, because otherwise it would in 90% of the times be odd to do it unless it was a request. Signatures doesn't need a sense of art to make. They only require tutorials. You don't need any skills whatsoever to make things like signatures, text effects and the like, you can just follow a step-by-step tutorial. No reason to hold back just because some people react, that's natural.
dgg, I gotta agree with you, signatures themselves may not be art but sure as hell are a great stepping stone for things that can evolve from them, they are good and short practice for layouts, colouring, contrasts, blending, etc.. They helps people learn the software they use to make the best out of their ideas and be comfortable with it. Most great digital artists I knew, started with simple signatures and worked their way up to large pieces, such as these. If this is not art to you I don't know what is. Which is why I'm telling him to do something else.
But he isn't even that good with signatures yet, id say keep practicing with them and try different things when he understands what he is doing better. Large pieces like above are very similar to signatures, except of making renders off random images on internet they are drawn and scanned by hand, but if you don't know about composing in the first place it will be a waste of time. I think of it just as a good practice, once you learn to make sick sigs you can start and add on your original touches on them and work bigger. OP has potential though!
I think what he is trying to say is that signatures aren't a good way to learn. They are a way, but there are most certainly a lot of better options and things to start off with instead.
