(May 19, 2011) – Principal photography has begun on Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “The Dark Knight Rises”: the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar® winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy as Bane; Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”) as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake. Returning to the main cast, Oscar® winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”) plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) reprises the role of Lucius Fox. In helming “The Dark Knight Rises,” Christopher Nolan is utilizing IMAX® cameras even more extensively than he did on “The Dark Knight,” which marked the first time ever that a major feature film was partially shot with IMAX® cameras. The results were so spectacular that the director wanted to expand the use of the large-format cameras for this film. The screenplay for “The Dark Knight Rises” is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan. The story is by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. The film is being produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster “The Dark Knight”. The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. “The Dark Knight” is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane. Behind the scenes, “The Dark Knight Rises” reunites the director with several of his longtime collaborators (all of whom worked together on the “The Dark Knight”). The creative team includes director of photography Wally Pfister, who recently won an Oscar® for his work on Nolan’s “Inception”; production designer Nathan Crowley; editor Lee Smith; and Oscar®-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (“Topsy-Turvy”). In addition, Paul Franklin and Chris Corbould (who both won Oscars® for the effects in “Inception”) will supervise the visual and special effects, respectively. The music will be composed by Oscar® winner Hans Zimmer (“The Lion King”). The locations for “The Dark Knight Rises” span three continents and include the American cities of Pittsburgh, New York and Los Angeles as well as sites in India, England and Scotland. “The Dark Knight Rises” is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures in association with Legendary Pictures. Slated for release on July 20, 2012, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, which is a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
VILLAINS REVEALED: Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman: http://www.deadline.com/2011/01/anne-hathaway-wins-selina-kyle-role-in-the-dark-knight-rises/
BURBANK, CA, January 19, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.” She will be starring alongside Christian Bale, who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Christopher Nolan stated, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story.” In addition, Tom Hardy has been set to play Bane. Nolan said, “I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.” Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. “The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
RELEASE DATE: July 20th, 2012, on the same weekend time that Dark Knight opened on (july 18th, 2008) Will it be 3D? : NO. More info on what they'll be doing with this film instead of 3D: http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/10/27/nolan-dark-knight-rises-finds-the-future-in-imax-not-3d/
The commitment to IMAX and high-definition cameras will allow Nolan to avoid the dim-image challenges that come with 3D. He said it will let him take the third film in the series into a new strata as far as image quality and the scale that can be achieved with that quality. ”We’re looking to do something technologically that’s never been done before,” Nolan said. “Our ambitions are to make a great movie.”
And even more info: http://batman-news.com/2010/12/22/vp-of-imax-talks-the-dark-knight-rises/
* The Dark Knight Rises will be filmed in IMAX. How much? “Many more minutes” than The Dark Knight’s 28 minutes. * Christopher Nolan may use a 65mm camera for dialogue scenes in The Dark Knight Rises. * The Dark Knight may be re-released in IMAX as part of a double-feature when The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters. * Keighley has had about 5 meetings with Nolan, they’re working together to make improvements for The Dark Knight Rises.
For the longest time since, well, batman 2, rumors have been flying about the third film, if it was even going to happen, and, the biggest if, if Christopher Nolan was going to return to direct it or if someone else would take over (which would've sucked). Well it looks like its official now. Here's the facts: It's going to happpen. It's going to be the finale of the trilogy, the ending of the story, and Christopher Nolan, Jonathon Nolan, and David S Goyer are all returning to write it, with Chris directing again. Ignore all those rumors floating around about robin and the riddler and anything else like that, nothing is confirmed and Chris said he wasn't gonna have Robin in his movies.
“Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story. And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story. We have a great ensemble, that’s one of the attractions of doing another film, since we’ve been having a great time for years. I’m very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we’ve done with the characters. My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these thing don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling. And it hearkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That’s what we do.”
More here: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2010/03/christopher-nolan-takes-flight-with-superman-we-have-a-fantastic-story-1.html I'm glad team nolan is returning to give us a good sequel. I can't wait for it. I'm really looking forward to the conclusion of this fucking awesome trilogy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Previous updates: UPDATE 1: http://screenrant.com/christopher-nolan-batman-3-script-benk-66204/ So it sounds like they'll be doing the same thing they did with Dark Knight: David Goyer and Christopher Nolan did the story, and Christopher Nolan and Jonah Nolan do the script. UPDATE 2: MR. FREEZE AND JOKER HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED AS NOT APPEARING IN BATMAN 3. Go check out the new issue of Empire Magazine. Also no Joker recast either. UPDATE 3: Christopher Nolan is apparently back to direct the final film in the trilogy. Previously he had been unsure about it, but now it seems that's no longer the case http://www.empireonline.com/news/feed.asp?NID=29062 UPDATE 4: Deadline is reporting from inside sources that Tom Hardy (Eames The Forger in Inception), having had filming on the Mad Max remake delayed, (which would have been his next film) is going to be taking on a lead role in Batman 3 http://www.deadline.com/2010/10/tom-hardy-reunited-with-inception-helmer-chris-nolan-on-batman/ Hope it's for the villain, that'd be fantastic. UPDATE 5: And now the news is really coming in. Confirmed through the LA Time's Editor's Twitter and Facebook pages, tomorrow morning (or today I guess, just passed midnight for me) he will be posting THREE announcements regarding BATMAN 3, having just talked with Christopher Nolan over the phone. http://batman-news.com/2010/10/26/exclusive-christopher-nolan-batman-3-interview-tomorrow/ Here's hoping for a title and villain reveal, third could also be just confirming Tom Hardy as joining the cast. Another possibility is finally clarifying what the shooting format will be, be it 3D or all Imax. Though I'm not gonna get too excited over this, could easily just be him dismissing some rumors and clarifying the production details or something, so who knows. http://herocomplex.latimes.com/ Check here later today^ Another report came from moviehole, claiming Nolan and co. will be interviewing actresses for Batman 3 this week, women that are in their late 20's and early 30's and not super famous. But i dunno if that's anything official yet. http://www.moviehole.net/201032704-exclusive-hunt-for-batman-female-lead-begins Update 6: http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/10/27/christopher-nolan-reveals-title-of-third-batman-film-and-that-it-wont-be-the-riddler/ And we got the title. And finally we can stop hearing all those riddler rumors, as he is out of the race too. And looks like Nolan won't be doing 3D for this, either. Update 7: http://www.deadline.com/2010/11/chris-nolan-lines-up-actresses-for-batfilm/ So that whole rumor of Nolan looking for two actresses, one to be a love interest of Wayne, and another, which I'm rather glad is fake, a love interest for Gordon (even though he's married and has a kid. Apparently he had an affair at one point in the comic or something) turned out to be half right. Nolan is searching for two female leads and one is a new love interest for Batman. The other one besides Wayne's love interest is going to be for none other than the villain, which makes me wonder now what exactly Tom Hardy's role in this film is going to be, although I suppose they could do two villains again. Anyways, here's the list of candidates for the two roles: Rachel Weisz Naomi Watts Blake Lively Natalie Portman Anne Hathaway Keira Knightley So the new question now is what will the female villain be? Catwoman is obviously the most popular suggested role, and the other one people have been suggesting is Talia Al Gul, who is apparently Ras Al Gul's daughter in the comics (Ras being the bad guy from Batman Begins). Just have to wait and see now. Update 8: http://www.deadline.com/2011/02/joseph-gordon-levitt-in-talks-to-join-the-dark-knight-rises/ It's looking like Tom Hardy isn't the only Inception actor coming back to do The Dark Knight Rises, as Joseph Gordon Levitt is now in talks to take on a role as well. No other information available right now, though. Update 9: http://www.nyc.gov/html/film/pdf/reeljobs.pdf "Magnux Rex" Magnus is the name of one of Christopher Nolan's kids. The Dark Knight worked under "Rory's First Kiss" Rory again being the name of one of his kids. Also lol "Subconscious Productions" In case you haven't figured it out that's "The Dark Knight Rises" secret production name, and considering what it has listed as the film's start date, that makes today the first day of filming. Awesome. Update 10: Variety magazine, having apparently talked with sources close to the film and having run this by Warner Brothers, claim that JGL will be playing Alberto Falcone, the son of Carmine Falcone, the mafia boss from Batman Begins http://www.showblitz.com/2011/03/jgls-dark-knight-rises-role-revealed.html While Entertainment weekly on the other hand, says that JGL is in but isn't playing Alberto Falcone. http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/03/21/joseph-gordon-levitt-dark-knight-rises/ Regardless it's safe to assume JGL is in, but that really isn't a surprise. Update 11: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/social-network-actor-lands-role-176577 A young Ra's Al Ghul will apparently be in flashback sequences for The Dark Knight Rises. Josh Pence will play the part. Only thing i know him from was as the body double for the Winkelvoss Twins in the Social network (Armie Hammer's face was put over his scenes where he was used). So then, looks like the League of Shadows might be coming back. Update 12: Marion Cotillard (Mal from Inception) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Arthur from Inception) are now officially confirmed. Marion plays a wayne enterprises employee, and Levitt a cop working under Gordon.
BURBANK, CA, April 19, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined the cast of “The Dark Knight Rises,” the epic conclusion to the Dark Knight legend. Cotillard will appear as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham. Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon. The film reunites the actors with Christopher Nolan, who recently directed them in the award-winning blockbuster “Inception.” The director stated, “When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience. I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again.” Heading the cast of “The Dark Knight Rises,” Christian Bale stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The main cast also includes Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle and Tom Hardy as Bane. Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Christopher Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven. “The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
fyi, one of the many claims that leaked plot line made was that Levitt was gonna play a villain. So much for that shit. Update 13: Want your voice in the dark knight rises? Check it out
I’m shining the bat-signal up into the sky to call you all! We need to hear your voices! Now and Loud! We are creating the sound of a worldwide chant. Everyone come and be part of it. It’s easy: There is no such thing as out-of-tune, no timing we can’t fix later. I can't fucking wait!
I want Mr. Freeze.
I heard rumor that they're trying to get Jim Carry as The Riddler again.
Doubt it. Jim Carrey rarely does the same role twice, think the only one he's done twice is Ace Ventura.
I don't think they can do anything that will make me happy with this movie. Heath Ledger dying just fucked everything up. It's going to be awkward moving around that.
None of those casting rumors are real fyi
This is going to be fucking sweet. This could be one of the best, most consistent trilogies ever. Definitely the best Superhero trilogy.
I heard rumor that they're trying to get Jim Carry as The Riddler again.
Oh God no.
If they can out do the Dark Knight (which i'm not sure is even possible) its going to be an extremely good movie. I have high expectations for this.
If they can out do the Dark Knight (which i'm not sure is even possible) its going to be an extremely good movie. I have high expectations for this.
They need to make a movie that can out do Avatar. Then I won't have to here how its the best film ever. Don't get me wrong I liked it, but not THAT much.
Going to be awesome :3: Wonder who the villian will be, I'm hoping for Bane.
And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story.
a.k.a. Batman dies at the end.
better be fucking penguin or freeze or I will flip shit
mr. penguin ah fuck ninja'd
Doubt it. Jim Carrey rarely does the same role twice, think the only one he's done twice is Ace Ventura.
Dumber and Dumber'er. Also, they better not try to get a new Joker, that would piss me off.
Johnny Depp as Predator.
time for another dull, overhyped movie.
time for another dull, overhyped movie.
I'm guessing that avatar is japanese for "I'm a shit poster"
a.k.a. Batman dies at the end.
i thought that at first but then i remember these movies serve as batman's origin story. So the movie could just end with him being the batman we know from the comicbooks, that is, not hated by police and feared by gotham citizens.
Bane seems a bit out there, Riddler/Penguin i'd like to see.
I have a hard time seeing the Penguin as a good choice for these films. I don't want them to devolve into ridiculous, unrealistic villains. Penguin is just...I dunno, too camp?
(working title) Aliens VS Predator VS Batman
I want Mr. Freeze.
the comic batman&robin ..................................................................................
Dumber and Dumber'er. Also, they better not try to get a new Joker, that would piss me off.
That wasn't Jim Carrey. If my memory serves me right, it was Eric Olsen, the same guy who played the young version of an old guy on smallville who fell into a kryptonite pond and grew younger.
This is exactly the news I was waiting for in terms of the 'new' Batman franchise, as I have thoroughly enjoyed the new films up until the point, here's hoping that the third film will end it with a bang rather than a whimper.
Harley Quinn seems too close to the Joker and i'd think Nolan would want something alot different, i'm more interested in who is going to play the villain rather than who the villain is. Mainly because I didn't think Heath would do such a great job as the Joker but it blew me away, Heath stacked the deck so high for Batman villains in these movies that anyone who would follow him would (hopefully) do a very good job at it.
Fucking awesome! [editline]12:49AM[/editline]
Doubt it. Jim Carrey rarely does the same role twice, think the only one he's done twice is Ace Ventura.
There's something so stupid about this post but i just can't put my finger on it.
Bane seems a bit out there, Riddler/Penguin i'd like to see.
I have to disagree, these films are serious. Only 1 man runs around in tights and even then they're armoured, bullet proof tights. I don't really think the Penguin has a place in it, awesome though he is. Riddler is too remote I find, riddles riddles and when Batman catches up with him it's 1 hit and out. Bane. Everyone knows Bane. He broke Batmans back and figured out Bruce Wayne is Batman.
IMO Something between the Scarecrow (who is still around; Batman didn't put him away or anything) and Bane would be really cool *deep voice on* "I'm not wearing hockey pads."
