Okay so here's the story, yesterday I went thrifting with a friend of mine, something we do weekly . In one of the thrift shops I found 3 really old books. The oldest is from the year 1607, the middle one is from 1664 and the "youngest" is from 1710. I found some handwriting in the oldest book. It's written in old dutch or even old flemish but I should be able to read it. The problem is that the handwriting is pretty difficult to decipher. This is what I got so far: The first 2 lines are (I think): Dit boeck is geschoncken aan meester ... Anno 1625. which translates as: This book is a gift to master ... Anno 1625. Also the last 2 words probably say: September 1625. But I can't read the other words.. So to everyone who can read dutch, I ask you to help me! Here are the books and a photo of the text:
I'm envious.
How much did you pay for those books? I could imagine they were worth a lot when they were first made by hand in a manual press. How does something like that go unnoticed in a thrift shop?
I payed 35 euro for the 3 books which is a steal. The owner of the store also said that there'll probably be more incoming next week. I'll be camping at the store all week I think :v:
a friend of mine found old WW2 german bomber mittens in a thrift shop... amazing how you find such history in thrift shops.
are they thew bible [editline]30th October 2015[/editline] old book sare often the bibles
are they thew bible [editline]30th October 2015[/editline] old book sare often the bibles
Wtf are you drunk? Nice find op, good luck decoding it.
Here you go, translated it a bit and came out on this match http://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/100235396
Well they are all religeous but none of these are bibles. The one from 1710 is the story of Joseph son of Jacob with a ton of etchings. Here's some scans from the etchings (found these on tumblr weirdly enough)

Thanks though!
Yeah but still need to decode the handwriting though, also the book with the pictures is not the book with the handwriting that needs to be decoded.
Friend of mine studies this stuff. I'll show her the pictures.
i think the weird z-looking thing is an r... so the second line would be "geroert anno 1625"... don't know if that made sense back then but i have no idea what it means then the next line looks like "gedenckt maria ...." last line "den dooden September 1625"?
Geroert should be some kind of sur name I think. I'll try looking up some dutch sur names that start with ger. "den dooden September 1625" is probably "den derden September 1625"
This is what i think so far
Dit boeck is geschoncken aen meester geeraert anno 1625 gedenckt maria ... oock mede de siel van haar overleeden man sal start den derden September 1625
so its a book that's gifted to master Gerard in the year 1625. It commemorates someone called maria something. some event happened on the 3rd of september 1625
Dude watch out you might be in possession of grimoires and you will unleash great evil if you decode the text, that are actually prayers to long forgotten malevolent gods.' Surely looks like the work of the saturnalian brotherhood.
Great! We're getting closer
Definitely take this stuff to a museum or something.
Check in with your nearest university that has a European History department. I am certain they can give you more context and information as to what this yields.
I would bring it to a museum or something and see if they would like it. While it may be cool to have in your house, a museum could likely study it and preserve it better than you can.
I think it's probably: "oock mede de siel van haar overleeden man" (also the soul of her dead husband)
The last name of maria seems to be camerlijn. maria Camerlijns
Chances are you're about to unleash an ancient evil. I suggest you reconsider and burn the books ASAP.
The last name of maria seems to be camerlijn. maria Camerlijns
Awesome work man!
someone didn't make an illuminati joke about the triangle eye? In all seriousness, i'm pretty sure it just represents the eye of god looking down or something.

Though he could still bring them in to let the historians have a look at them, and maybe in return learn something about the books.
It informs you that you are a faget
It informs you that you are a faget
considering the time period it's more likely to say you're a heretic
