Diatoms are cool! Diatoms are a kind of algae. They carry out photosynthesis as a means of food production, a lot like other plants! However, diatoms are unique in many ways. Unlike other algae, diatom cells have a glassy, sharp cell wall composed of silicate. This quality makes them valuable for a number of applications - for example, dead diatoms are used in toothpaste! The sharp cell walls of the diatoms help to scrape particles off the teeth. Diatoms are used in pesticides too. I forget why but it was something about them scratching insect carapaces, which are incapable of healing. Diatoms are really mysterious and maybe magical too! They exhibit a grouping behavior where many diatoms in an area link together to form mega-diatom-structures. The way in which they communicate to do this is not understood by science. Lots of people have studied diatoms and still can't figure it out! As you can see from this image of the rare diatomus gandolfus, diatoms are possibly wizards. Diatoms are super rad as you can see. I hope this thread has shown you a little bit about how neat diatoms are!
What.
What the.
They're also used for aquarium filtering. (Diatomaceous earth) Just don't breathe it in, it'll slice up your lungs

I know know more about diatoms then ever before!
Aren't diatoms the reason the ocean shimmers at night with that odd sparkle, like a toddler spilled glitter into a bathtub?
I love the microscopic world, diatoms are just one of the millions of awesome organisms in their little world
 Conclusion: diatoms are candy necklaces.
Diatoms are the shit and more people need to know about them. Also imagine a multi-cellular organism made of diatoms. Would look so badass.

They are concealing their magical powers very well.
those are the happiest family clumps of diatoms i have ever seen
Looks like pesto to me, makes it even better.
Diatoms make saltwater reef tanks ugly. Though it's an important process in establishing the system and they'll go away awhile. (not my tank)
