Features 5 outposts in total, with 2 meant to act as bases opposing each other. The plan was for balanced combat in which you could take control of the outposts like conquest, but the layout of the bases might make it lopsided for one of the bases, so it's up in the air right now. Here's a fly through of an older version that featured no fog at all, and flatter terrain. https://youtu.be/q_AzqaYtz-I A somewhat recent video of the current version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5p3qU0XlL1o The outposts have been decorated quite a bit more than what's in that video, but I only have pictures for that. https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/939432098222431633/EBB97F41C080D0182D3EF1B1871462F36B7BC2D7/ https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/939432098222431250/B58F3D905E5C5B0D8E609439BD39DED9A110CBBF/ https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/939432098222431797/64E6830FA402D1F6E516825183B875C5896ED85E/ https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/939432098222431446/E252E53F88240C358E103DA931610A588EBC6642/ https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/963091845744519787/9EB96330D9E54A6A4EAFFD46D002B82519309059/ https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/963091845744521377/97A7291237C847A2474D69CC62ED445CA76FBE21/ https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/963091845744523185/5AC83249B7637FB5C3370248E03E6A0446AD36C2/ vytenspawnroom´╗┐ I'm not exactly sure how the new thread creator works, so forgive me if the formatting is terrible.
It has amazing "badcompanish" feel to it
This looks great, there aren't many good looking snow maps available. Have you thought about making custom props like icicles to hang down? or possibly particles for snow?
looks pretty good, kind of a tangent here but i recommend using the snow texture with 'snow_normal" as the $surfaceprop i got the gmod devs to add this a few years back and I dont think many people know it exists basically its snow but with more normal friction so people arent sliding around when they play its in \scripts\surfaceproperties.txt of garrysmod_dir.vpk if u wanna check it exists
Thank you! Icicles are a great idea, and I do currently have particle snow in, but I've had trouble trying to balance performance with it. I didn't want it seeping through buildings, and it doesn't seem possible to do that without the particle system eating away at your fps, but I've never really made particles before so maybe I'm doing something wrong. That was definitely one of my priorities when I first started the map. I managed to find it while looking through that file, so it looks like I have you to thank for that being there. I'm not sure how to embed streamable, but here's a walkthrough of the current spawn area. Vyten Spawn Room
Lovely work
Slow but steady progress. New skybox setup, and the 3d skybox is just about finished. https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/942826282202307160/121DCCA3753CD6F3ACE534526289CF4A19894A49/ https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/942826282202306942/DCECC396C078F048671CA08B80D428B112F8085E/ https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/942826282202308802/BF227F623F51DB4C27B61433DF4C80CDB20607CB/ https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/942826282202307764/6B79A90D479F82B0C670729DA553099844AAAE57/ https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/942826282202307502/F5B6507A81268D3110ED8DDBF0616470D6974A6B/ Early test of what I wanted the 3d skybox to somewhat be like, but the fog honestly makes it impossible. Maybe for a different version. https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/939432098222772255/E95D58F065857EF7C187AD3FFA990CE6D59461E3/
Looking great! The watchtower interior has a nice cosy feel to it. You could consider doing what I did in gm_fork and my upcoming map: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/132366/8b840da9-7bf4-4efe-9d61-e37fa43361c2/image.png In the 3D skybox, the water and all of the displacements are covered by an overlay with a radial gradient. Its material uses the $nofog parameter, causing it to more or less 'override' the regular fog. Obviously it's completely static, but it works pretty well on a large scale.
It reminds me of the snow base area from Call of Duty: MW2. I hope theres no bullshit cliffs I have to climb up lol.
Thank you! I definitely phrased that wrong. The fog is so thick that having any kind of mountains in the skybox becomes pointless unless I had them right near the edge which looked kind of silly when I first tried it. I've been toying around with buttons that increase the view distance though, so I might still give it a shot using your method. This is the method I'm currently using. https://i.imgur.com/1x8sLFf.png and here's a dock https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/942826282209351503/155F30A6F2A9885268AA004D036012BE36FC1AA2/ https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/942826282209351755/E0678927BD5BB067CC80AAD656E8618FCCBF7ACA/
god damn it yes, I've been waiting like 10 years for a snow combat map
Ah, gotcha Have you considered enabling refractions on your water material? It's a fairly cheap way to make it look a lot better. Here's a VMT I used (props to @Rush_Freak for helping figure this out): "Water" { "$abovewater" 1 "%compilewater" 1 "$reflectentities" 0 "$envmap" "fork/cubemap_generic" "$envmapcontrast" "1" "%tooltexture" "nature/water_frame01_normal" "$scale" "[1 1]" "$bumpmap" "nature/water_coast01_dudv" "$normalmap" "nature/water_coast01_normal" "$surfaceprop" "water" "$bottommaterial" "fork/water_beneath" "$bumpframe" "0" "$fogenable" 1 "$fogcolor" "{54 52 48}" "$fogstart" 1.00 "$fogend" 256.00 "$refracttexture" "_rt_WaterRefraction" "$refractamount" 1.0 "$refracttint" "{255 255 255}" "$reflecttint" "{255 255 255}" "$cheapwaterstartdistance" "0" "$cheapwaterenddistance" "0" "$scroll1" "[.01 .01]" "$scroll2" "[.05 .05]" "Proxies" { "TextureScroll" { "texturescrollvar" "$bumptransform" "texturescrollrate" .02 "texturescrollangle" 25.00 } } } I used a custom-made cubemap, but it should work with a regular env_cubemap too.
Absolutely fantastic. I've always had some weird obsession over snowy maps and this one fits the ticket perfectly, especially ones that really give that sense of being cold. I had to turn my halogen heater on just looking at those images. Well Done!
Quick suggestion that might not make it in:
I had one really early on, but I wasn't happy with how much space it took up compared to everything else, so I got rid of it. I used the water from fork as a base, but I thought refractions were hard on your fps. It definitely looks better with them, but I'm still not sure. The transition from the main area to skybox is kind of harsh with it, which might be the reason I disabled it earlier. Kind of up to everyone else to decide. As for progress on the map, I think the 3d skybox is finished, or at least to a stage where I'd be happy with a release. Still need to add icicles to some areas, and maybe mess around with prop fading for better fps.
Hey look a released version https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1449731878 Thank you to everyone for the feedback. If you find any bugs, feel free to let me know. Definitely going to take a small break from working on this as long as nothing is seriously wrong though.
Look forward to seeing what it looks like later this afternoon.
Took a small break, but we've been making some adjustments, and working on the other versions so far. https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/969849147235579877/9875C34BFF9E51B233882EE97C50E692DAB78CDB/ https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/969849574787413581/070745F2CAD20C07CC4CE3EFE8A8BF51732EE16D/ Still need to tweak the lighting for the skybox on the woodland version, then do a night version as well. Once these 3 are done though, we'll be releasing the VMFs hopefully.
not to advertise, but would you be interested in a custom skybox? I have a good amount that I've made for the community. Jacob Robbins' Skyboxes
I've always really loved your skyboxes, and I actually use them quite a lot, but I want this map to support the paintable sky for Garry's Mod considering the amount of addons that need it. I'm considering adding a custom cloud texture for it to use at least though, so hopefully that breaks it up a bit.
Where can I find the snowy pine tree models used on this map?
They're from the game Day of Infamy on Steam. Here's a download of just the trees I used though. PineTrees.rar
Thank you so very much! I've seen them on multiple occasions, but never quite got where it is from.
