• Stem Cell Contact Lenses Cure Blindness
    140 replies, posted
All three patients were blind in one eye. The researchers extracted stem cells from their working eyes, cultured them in contact lenses for 10 days, and gave them to the patients. Within 10 to 14 days of use, the stem cells began recolonizing and repairing the cornea. Of the three patients, two were legally blind but can now read the big letters on an eye chart, while the third, who could previously read the top few rows of the chart, is now able to pass the vision test for a driver's license. The research team isn't getting over excited, still remaining unsure as to whether the correction will remain stable, but the fact that the three test patients have been enjoying restored sight for the last 18 months is definitely encouraging. The simplicity and low cost of the technique also means that it could be carried out in poorer countries.
Fuck yeah, science. And this is, what, five, six months since stem cell research was legalized?
And this is, what, five, six months since stem cell research was legalized?
The research was done is Australia it looks like.
Imagine what we could have done over the last eight years. [editline]05:32AM[/editline] Fcuk

and they said stem cell research would never benefit...
Stem sells r merder ur merdering bebys
Wait, so this can cure COMPLETE blindness or just legal blindness?

What type of blindness? Like, what exactly was wrong with their eyes?
Stem sells r merder ur merdering bebys
read the fucking article. it says they took it from their other working eye.
What type of blindness? Like, what exactly was wrogn with their eyes?
I think they said patients' eyes were damaged in chemotherapy and diseases...
read the fucking article. it says they took it from their other working eye.
Your sarcasm meter is broken isn't it?
:science: FUCK YEAH! Science! What's next to cure?
rednecks: IT'S UN ETHICAL! me: Um, For one it's from the eyes stem cell for two it's from the patient itself. rednecks:... me: exactly Rednecks: IT'S UN ETHICAL! Gonna happen.

Although being deaf is horrible, I can't really imagine much worse than blindness than being blind and deaf.
One wonders how there can be any opposition to stem cell research when it can benefit so many people in so many ways.
:science: FUCK YEAH! Science! What's next to cure?
Cancer. Using Cancerous Stem cells. :science:
So, how did they come up with this idea? John: So, uhm, we have these blind people. Bill: Fuck, what to do what to do? John: I have an idea, lets put stemcells on contact lenses and put them in their eyes and see what happens. Bill: Brilliant! Still, this is a great break through and I'm sure it's more complicated then, stemcells go on contact lens.
And this is, what, five, six months since stem cell research was legalized?
This was done with adult stem cells. Adult stem cell research has never been illegal (to my knowledge), concerting that they can be taken from patients without casing them any harm.
One wonders how there can be any opposition to stem cell research when it can benefit so many people in so many ways.
It's simple, a lot of people don't suffer from diseases that require stem cell research to cure. People are dicks.
