http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-18283689
Experts are warning that the public dangerously underestimates the health risks linked to smoking cannabis. The British Lung Foundation carried out a survey of 1,000 adults and found a third wrongly believed cannabis did not harm health. And 88% incorrectly thought tobacco cigarettes were more harmful than cannabis ones - when the risk of lung cancer is actually 20 times higher. The BLF said the lack of awareness was "alarming". Widely used Latest figures show that 30% of 16-59 year-olds in England and Wales have used cannabis in their lifetimes. A new report from the BLF says there are established scientific links between smoking cannabis and tuberculosis, acute bronchitis and lung cancer. Part of the reason for this, say the experts, is that people smoking cannabis take deeper puffs and hold them for longer than when smoking tobacco cigarettes. This means that someone smoking a cannabis cigarette inhales four times as much tar as from a tobacco cigarette, and five times as much carbon monoxide, the BLF says. Its survey found that young people are particularly unaware of the risks. Some studies have also suggested cannabis increases the chances of developing mental health problems such as schizophrenia. Almost 40% of the under-35s surveyed - the age group most likely to have smoked it - thought cannabis was not harmful. However, smoking one cannabis cigarette increases the chances of developing lung cancer by as much as an entire packet of 20 tobacco cigarettes, the BLF warned. Its chief executive, Dame Helena Shovelton, said: "It is alarming that, while new research continues to reveal the multiple health consequences of smoking cannabis, there is still a dangerous lack of public awareness of quite how harmful this drug can be. "This is not a niche problem - cannabis is one of the most widely-used recreational drugs in the UK, with almost a third of the population having tried it. "We therefore need a serious public health campaign - of the kind that has helped raise awareness of the dangers of eating fatty foods or smoking tobacco - to finally dispel the myth that smoking cannabis is somehow a safe pastime." The BLF's report says there should be a public education programme to raise awareness of the impact of smoking cannabis and increased investment in research into the health consequences of its use. Peter Reynolds, leader of Clear, which used to be known as the Legalise Cannabis Alliance, suggested the BLF had been highly-selective in its use of research. He added: "It is clear that this report was written not as a scientific document but as campaigning propaganda. "As such it is misleading, inaccurate and dangerously irresponsible."
I think the study itself is bullshit, but the idea that holding the smoke in your lungs for a long period of time can increase the dangers doesn't seem to far-fetched. So I go back to my normal argument, don't smoke weed, bake it into brownies or vape it.
I agree that risks are underestimated by most people, but shit, if you want health risks go to tobacco and check that shit.
I've never heard of someone getting lung cancer from smoking weed. Has there ever even been a documented case?
Snoop dog is fucked
I've never heard of someone getting lung cancer from smoking weed. Has there ever even been a documented case?
i don't think any studies have been done so probably not??
kids don't smoke weed, do crack cocaine instead
I've never heard of someone getting lung cancer from smoking weed. Has there ever even been a documented case?
Because, you know, someone would publicly go out and say such a thing, instead of blaming it on tobacco, which is much easier and has less repercussions.
i don't think any studies have been done so probably not??
There's studies that reveal stuff about carcinogens in it, you'd think they'd go all the way and get a case of lung cancer. Or maybe it would come up in a hospital.
Because, you know, someone would publicly go out and say such a thing, instead of blaming it on tobacco, which is much easier and has less repercussions.
I don't think that's the first they they would do. As I said, it could be revealed in a hospital or another study. There's countless amounts of people that smoke pot and similar numbers of studies, good and bad, about the drug, so there's good odds for it.
Most people I know who smoke weed smoke cigarettes too, so of course that's what the lung cancer would be blamed on. Smoking most things is bad for you.
The thing with weed is everyone only hears part of the argument at a time. In school you have stuff like D.A.R.E. which in theory educates people on the dangers of drugs but in practice (apparently) blows the danger up and makes most kids think it's bullshit. And people who are in favor of legalizing marijuana are going to emphasize the good points and avoid mention of the carcinogens. And further than that, it's not like a drug dealer is going to say "Here, smoke this, but be aware that it has many carcinogens in it that have a 45% chance of giving you lung cancer if you smoke it regularly." I think that weed probably is bad for you, although I don't know about how it compares to tobacco (which is very bad for you).
It's pretty funny because even if it is true, the people who are firm believers that cannabis is harmfree will just brush it off as the same old propaganda.
kids don't smoke weed, do crack cocaine instead
How about not doing either? Both are a huge waste of money, and health
It's pretty funny because even if it is true, the people who are firm believers that cannabis is harmfree will just brush it off as the same old propaganda.
gotta stick it to the man somehow
smoke in your lungs is dangerous the plant itself not so much
Because, you know, someone would publicly go out and say such a thing, instead of blaming it on tobacco, which is much easier and has less repercussions.
So you're going to imply that anyone that would hypothetically get lung cancer from Cannabis would not tell anyone or would not have it discovered in a long-term study? That's believable.
Smoking anything is bad. Cannabis itself might not be that harmful, but the act of "smoking" is still harmful to the body, especially if you do it regularly. Even if you were to just burn a piece of blank paper and inhale the fumes it's still bad for your lungs because you're inhaling a bunch of burnt particles.
And 88% incorrectly thought tobacco cigarettes were more harmful than cannabis ones - when the risk of lung cancer is actually 20 times higher.
sigh
everything can poison you if you abuse it the whole war on cannabis is a false war and a waste of resources, people are going to smoke cannabis recreationally regardless if you like it or not cops should go after actual crimes, not someone smoking some grass the said person grew in his/her basement or backyard

been wanting to try edibles

You're going to have to find me a citation for this.

If they catch you with it, they have to do something but most of the time, its your neighbor that calls it in not he cops on the street looking for it
It's pretty funny because even if it is true, the people who are firm believers that cannabis is harmfree will just brush it off as the same old propaganda.
The people that believe Cannabis is harmless because its "natural" are just as bad as the misinformed anti-drug soccer moms.
good thing I've never smoked a "cannabis cigarette"
Yeah except these risks can be easily stepped around by vaporizing or eating the weed. DURR DE HURR
However, smoking one cannabis cigarette increases the chances of developing lung cancer by as much as an entire packet of 20 tobacco cigarettes, the BLF warned.
good god my parents should be dead 10x over then I wonder why they're not???
vaporizers
No shit, any smoke isn't good for your lungs, i won't touch weed if i have to smoke it, vapes are better in almost every way.
45% of people that smoke Cannabis get lung cancer? You're going to have to find me a citation for this.
I never said 45% of people. I was just making up a number for a hypothetical drug dealer who keeps his clients informed of the risks they're taking. His name is Reggie.
