If you're a conservative, it might be your brain's fault. So says British scientists who scanned the brains of two members of the British Parliament and about 90 students. Richard Alleyne, Science Correspondent for the UK Telegraph, reported Wednesday that those with conservative views have larger amygdalas, the area of the brain associated with anxiety and fear. They also have a smaller anterior cingulate, an area at the front of the brain associated with courage and optimism. Prof Geraint Rees, of the University College London and head researcher for the study, told the Telegraph:"We were very surprised to find that there was an area of the brain that we could predict political attitude. It is very surprising because it does suggest there is something about political attitude that is encoded in our brain structure through our experience or that there is something in our brain structure that determines or results in political attitude." According to the Telegraph, researchers said the size of those two areas of the brain were directly related to the political viewpoints of those studied, but could not say if the volunteer's brains were born that way, or if they had developed over time since all the volunteers were adults. An article at The Gawker sums it up this way: "So there you have it. I don't think it's wildly extrapolating or jumping to any conclusions to say that this study definitively proves that conservatism is a brain disorder. I think that's been proven by this 90-person study. Conservatives are all stupid brain-damaged idiots who are stupid and brain-damaged. And idiots." Since liberals like to say conservatives (especially Sarah Palin) are stupid, one wonders how long it will take media liberals to claim Palin is brain-damaged. At the risk of breaking Godwin's Law, studies like this remind one of early 20th century "studies" done in Germany that said Jews were brain damaged and deformed. And we all know how that ended. Nevertheless, the study does not seem to account for those who originally hold one opinion, then change their minds. Does their brain geometry change when their political views change? Remember, Ronald Reagan was not always a conservative Republican. If nothing else, it will certainly provide fodder for the hardcore left wing fringe as they step up their demonetization of anything conservative.
Source: http://www.examiner.com/conservative-in-spokane/study-links-conservative-views-to-brain-geometry
Sample size of 2. :frog:
Once again, facepunch, please don't get into this argument again. Everybody has different views.
this isn't news
Correct, and very bias "reporting". Dear God.
this isn't news

90 students and 2 members of the parliament? No. Seriously. They'd need hundreds of people for a proper study.
I have a feeling that the author of this article is liberal.
I think it's Nick Clegg who has got brain damage.
ironically enough the writer of the article sounds just as brain damaged as he claims conservatives to be
I have a feeling that the author of this article is liberal.
Did you read the last paragraph?
That's a shite sample size.
Load of bullshit. But conservatives are pretty dumb though, but still this article is a load of crap
Did you read the last paragraph?
Oops:v: I have a feeling that the people conducting the experiment are liberal.
Oops:v: I have a feeling that the people conducting the experiment are liberal.
Maybe they're just scientists trying to prove a hypothesis?
I'm guessing the author of this article would totally deny that homosexuality could be a brain disorder, though. :V
This seems a bit obtuse.
Bull shit study, terrible study size, and it's from the examiner.
I'm Conservative, but I applaud what Labour did when it introduced the NHS. Methinks this 'study' can be filed under 'B' for 'Bullshit'.
This is not news It's a widely known fact
Most of the article is a gross misunderstanding. I'd like to see the original study. Having a larger amygdala does not mean that the brain is damaged. All the article should be saying is that, as expected - conservatives are going to be more apprehensive than their liberal counterparts with smaller amygdalas. In other words, conservatives are going to want things to be the same as they are and not push for the new. It's nothing new, theres just a physical understanding of why it happens now.
This is not news It's a widely known fact
"Hurr durr I think anyone who holds different views to me is inferior!" Sounds like a certain fascist who lived around 70 years ago.
"Hurr durr I think anyone who holds different views to me is inferior!" Sounds like a certain fascist who lived around 70 years ago.
 The article even made that connection, except nazi's were far right and jiyoon happens to be far left.
"Hurr durr I think anyone who holds different views to me is inferior!" Sounds like a certain fascist who lived around 70 years ago.
no he sounds like a reasonable person because he's right
This study does seem a bit silly, but the actual results do not suggest at all that the conservatives are 'brain damaged', just that they seem to have a slightly different brain structure - larger amygdala and smaller anterior cingulate. ALL the rest of the stuff is just rubbish added by journalists wanting to forward their own opinion... For example: the amygdala are associated with emotional memory and processing in general, not just 'fear' - typical journalistic skewing of facts. The anterior cingulate also is 'associated' with loads of things, from decision making to heart rate. It makes sense that there would be some difference in brain structure from liberals to conservatives, I mean, taxi drivers in london have been shown to have substantially larger areas of certain parts of the brain due to having "The Knowledge". Come on, learn to filter out the journalistic nonsense. [editline]30th December 2010[/editline]
Most of the article is a gross misunderstanding. ITT: Militant's.

Dear God.
Dear god people like you are dumb. 'WHOA, WHOA, WHOA, NO ARGUING ON AN INTERNET FORM WHEN SOMEONE POSTS A CONTROVERSIAL ARTICLE PLEASE! FOR THE CHILDREN!'
I don't need studies to call conservatives dumb and their opinions stupid I can just do it.
not inferior, brain damaged
I'm a liberal (an extremist even), but I don't think that it's appropriate to call someone an idiot because they have a different opinion. Heartless perhaps, ignorant, but rarely stupid or idiotic. (Okay, actually I do say that all the time. But for the sake of discussion no.) This article is EXTREMELY biased.
