Tourists can be terrible literally anywhere in the world. Not really a culture/race thing so much as it's a "I'm entitled b/c I have enough money to travel and don't need manners" thing.
Living in a region that gets some really intense tourism spikes in summer (in a country that's already very popular, tourism wise), I can attest that chinese tourists have a tendency to be a lot more rude to everyone else than other tourists. Everyone who goes to Paris will tell you the same thing. Chinese tourists are insufferable and think they own the place. And no I'm not saying this because of some bigoted or racist reason, I don't think chinese people are naturally worse than anyone else. Every nation has their rude annoying shitheads and it just happens that China's rude annoying shitheads are the ones who travel the most.
The Chinese are the Jews of Asia.
what's that even supposed to mean
The Chinese are the Jews of Asia.
Whats wrong with the Jewish?
im so glad we're still racially generalizing here in the year 2016
Sorry but when their own country had to make a tourist guide to tell people not to do stuff like this, including literally shitting in the streets, it stopped being generalizing.
Whats wrong with the Jewish?
Are you implying there is something wrong about the Chinese?
Nice anecdote bro. You could have any customer service worker say the same thing about any race. Mexicans, blacks, whites, foreigners. They would all say "Only this group of people is this bad" for every single race.
I've worked customer service for 8 years. Chinese were literally the only nationality where the '''staff audibly groaned when informed they'd be coming. We've had some chinese tourists who weren't asswipes, but the amount of tourists that did shit like this was large enough to the point were sooner or later everybody who worked at the place I worked at would dread the groups of chinese tourists. Not all of them are like this, obviously. But over here you hear it all over the place.
People please just stop looking at things through an idealogical lens - on both sides - your view of the world is distorted and you lose out. The Chinese tourist problem is well-known and well-documented. No, Chinese aren't all disgusting tourists, and yes there are disgusting tourists from all cultures. But if you're going to be running a business that deals with tourism, you're going to have to recognize the Chinese problem above all others - because this is the biggest - lest you perform worse as a result. There are reasons already mentioned as to why Chinese tourists are singled out, it's not some ~random racism~.
Sorry but when their own country had to make a tourist guide to tell people not to do stuff like this, including literally shitting in the streets, it stopped being generalizing.
Also this. Call it racism all you want, but chinese tourists and their attitudes are undeniably a big problem.
there is a kind of hypocrisy in generalizing the manners of people from the most culturally varied and populous country on earth and then hiding behind the limits of the word "racism"
Tourists can be terrible literally anywhere in the world. Not really a culture/race thing so much as it's a "I'm entitled b/c I have enough money to travel and don't need manners" thing.
i would say that but then i read up on china tourism last night and peoples experiences with it. they are way worse than any tourist horror story i ever heard it's gotten to the point where switzerland is making special trains just for china tourists with signs in the train telling them how to use toilets properly. It hadn't even been referred to it as racism so much as generalizing in regards to the comment "lowest of the low tier". I can acknowledge it's an issue, but comments like that aren't doing much to acknowledge the issue itself so much as lumping the entirety of Chinese tourists into some ranking system where they're at the bottom.
there is a kind of hypocrisy in generalizing the manners of people from the most culturally varied and populous country on earth and then hiding behind the limits of the word "racism"
not to mention it doesn't make sense "american tourists are the worst" "stop being racist against the american race" ???
Lol its not a race issue. Rather more of a nationality issue. I'm chinese myself, but I can't understand why they can't just fucking follow rules and basic etiquette. Like even when we have fucking chinese notices made especially for them, they still refuse to acknowledge em. Some even go further to complain, when clearly they are in the wrong.
Russia went through this with the whole russo touristo thing. China is a relatively newly-opened country, and keeping the country's own differences in mind, things like this do happen, but over time, as more people get to travel and learn about the outside world, things will improve. The tourist boom for them only started recently, if I recall correctly.
Tourists can be terrible literally anywhere in the world. Not really a culture/race thing so much as it's a "I'm entitled b/c I have enough money to travel and don't need manners" thing.
The average Chinese tourist really is worse than the average non Chinese tourist though. Even when they are not tourist, stuff like this is the norm for the Chinese in the big city's near the sea.Its the same with getting in buses, going through a passport checkpoint or trough a gate at the metro. They all pile up and try and push through at the same time. They also let nobody get out first. Also the same with Chinese in Chinese hotels, they al smoke everywhere (even in the breakfast room) and just put out their sigaret on the stainless steel tray right next to the food. And this is even in good western Hotels. They just dont care about random people. I think this is due to the mentality they grow up with. That they have to always be better than everybody else or fail in life. They get pushed and push themselves incredibly hard in school and really anywhere else due to this "me first, other people failing is less competition for me" mentality. Source: I travel to China for work now and then.
Consider that the Chinese who can afford to, or even are able to travel to other countries are an extremely specific slice of the society. So, generalizing Chinese tourists is not "racism against the Chinese".
not to mention it doesn't make sense "american tourists are the worst" "stop being racist against the american race" ???
Eh the difference is that the Chinese make up the largest percentage of East Asians and are generally only East Asians. America is made up a shitload of different ethnic groups. Still it's bullshit. To solve a problem you must acknowledge it, and right now the majority of Chinese tourists are a problem.
American tourists act obnoxious as hell here in Britain, I don't see why it's a specifically Chinese thing.
It's not but racism towards Asia is apparently acceptable. Not only with Chinese tourists but in general. This thread is pretty much a testament to that. [editline]21st March 2016[/editline]
So, generalizing Chinese tourists is not "racism against the Chinese".
jeez
Cultural differences are somewhat of a contributing factor to what's been happening, not just the sheer number of Chinese tourists. Many philosophies we take for granted here in the west aren't really things in Asia. So for instance, western cultures emphasise the individual and being individually responsible, whereas Asian cultures tend to instead emphasise the collective (and so Chinese tourists have to be reminded about etiquette as an individual). In China this isn't helped by the fact that most of the 'civilised' upper classes were slaughtered by Mao's regime, and the tourists we deal with today are all the recent descendants of peasants Kinda related, but over the past few months here we've had a kind of national crisis, because Chinese tourists have been flooding into our supermarkets and buying all of our baby formula, so they could take them back to China and sell on grey markets for a profit. Anecdotal but some mothers have had to travel to as many as eight supermarkets before finding the formula that they use. The supermarkets have realised this, and (I think it's still in effect) customers are only allowed one unit of baby formula per sale. In the supermarket I go to, they've even hung up signs in Mandarin in the baby aisle to tell the tourists that.

Spanish school groups and Chinese tours probably top the list.

I mean it's a valid generalization, Chinese tourists are renowned all over the fucking world from Sweden to America for doing shit like this regularly.
During the Great Leap Forward and the Chinese Cultural Revolution millions upon millions of people were killed with a majority (during the Cultural Revolution) being targeted for being intellectuals, teachers, artists, and simply the upper class. This was to destroy the rulers to subjugate the uneducated masses. The remainder were basically peasants and serfs who were indoctrinated with simple algorithms on how to be good communists. Over the next six decades China grew and many of those peasants and farmers ended up getting enough money to travel, but devoid of intellectuals their society grew into one most others would view as brackish and crude. Allow those people to travel and you get what you see above. The worst part is the ideology that permeates Western Culture that says that all cultures are equal and must be respected lest you be labeled an ethnocentrist and a bigot but that's just a bunch of social nihilism.
Oh look, you're just like the guacbowl guy who goes on about "cultural purity" and how the west corrupts the idea of culture. Get out of here, feeling culturally superior to others is just the first step on the road hatred and racism, which in turns leads to genocide if such ideas get out of hand. It's fine to criticize cultures but be also as willing to criticize your own. The problem is those who do criticize western culture are labelled as "Cultural Marxists" and put down as those like you continue to spread the message of hate of Arabs and Islam, so it truly leads to an idea of "Ethnocentrism" when you extend the criticism to every culture but your own. No culture on earth is pure and that includes your own, especially with those like you preaching this message of hatred with a dog whistle of racism to indoctrinate people to your message.
Haha yeah sorry but as someone whose family comes from China I can confirm that a much higher proportion of tourists from Mainland China are crass and vulgar, compared to other nationalities. Call it national or cultural discrimination, but racism it is not. Hong Kongers, Taiwanese, Singapore Chinese, Malaysian Chinese, Indonesian Chinese, or any other Chinese diaspora will tell you the same thing about Mainland Chinese: they suck. Maybe some people here do think that all Chinese (regardless of where they're from) are bad tourists, but I think most people can make the distinction between a Chinese from China and a Chinese from America. It's most certainly not a race thing.
And Reddit is like a burning trashpit of political and social discussion.
I'm not trying to say "Chinese tourists" aren't a problem, just last line they used sets a dangerous prescience of ideas. It's very low-key fascist speak. "It's okay to feel culturally superior," they say. "The Western Elites won't have any of it, they tell you lies of equality." Fascism is a very nationalistic ideology that encourages thoughts like this and has dangerous consequences.
Wasn't there some story about a country or some providence restricting tourism from China due to them being notoriously bad? Personally speaking though I've worked in the tourism industry and haven't had problems with Chinese people.

It seems to be pretty well documented so I don't see the problem in saying that Chinese are worlds worst tourists. It's so easy to tell a group of mainland Chinese tourists apart from a group of Taiwanese etc.
Us Brits act like this abroad too, it's fucking insane. When I was in Spain, there was an all-you-can-eat buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner (it was an All-Inclusive holiday), and whenever there was prawns and/or pizza, me and my family looked on in surprise/shock at the queue as mountains of people pushed, shoved and occasionally fought against each other for the food, as if they were going to starve to death in the middle of a buffet. A fair few of them even had as much as 5 or 6 slices of thick-crust pizza piled on top of their plates :v:
I can get by them going at it like a pack of hungry fucking dogs, we all gotta eat but the food wastage is just... you are literally several tiers below animal
Nice anecdote bro. You could have any customer service worker say the same thing about any race. Mexicans, blacks, whites, foreigners. They would all say "Only this group of people is this bad" for every single race.
Culture does play a huge role in customer service. At my two of my retail jobs, local Mexicans were extremely bad at pulling items off the shelf en mass and when they get to the end, they choose what they really want and put the rest in a random area in a massive horde. Or they bring the entire buggy full of items to the cashier and purchase 3 out of 42 items. This happened at both jobs with one causing meat/fruit to rot due to them hiding it somewhere no one looks. Sure, everyone does it once in a while, but it mostly happens with that culture. Even my friend who is partially Mexican said its a Mexican thing that he notices all the time that his family still does.
