http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-30454240
London airspace has been closed until 19:00 GMT after a computer failure, air traffic controllers have said. The news was announced in a brief message on flight safety body Eurocontrol's website. UK air traffic controllers Nats confirmed a "technical problem" at its Swanwick control centre in Hampshire. It said in a statement "every possible action" was being taken to resolve the problem.
When I first heard that they were closing airspace over London on the radio I thought "Oh Bollocks!" now I know it was a computer issue there will be no doubt a techi' saying "Oh Bollocks!"
I clicked and expecting it would be posted in Hardware and Software sub forum. Boy was I wrong. Curious as to what the "technical" issue was?
The cleaner unplugged it so she could hoover up.

Did they try rebooting?
They tried calling IT, but it turns out that they were IT.

I wonder how much money it's costing them? On a side note, I fucking HATE Windows 8 when it does that. Especially when I'm working on a report or something and it just randomly starts shutting down my computer with no warning (none of that "15 minute warning" horseshit) and I lose everything I was working up after I saved. One of the absolute STUPIDEST things they could have done with that OS.
You do know that instead of complaining you can turn that off?
I want a halfway option though. I want to be able to have a Windows 7-like system where I can postpone the automatic update.
You do know that instead of complaining you can turn that off?
But then he can't angrily shitpost about it in SH.

If you pick them, it won't auto-restart on you, but you'll just be given a "hey you need to restart, want to do it now or should you be bothered again in <x> minutes/hours>" prompt versus a "yeah we're going to restart on you, panic since you can't do shit" that you have.

For example: It also tells you on the login/lock screen next to the power button. It doesn't let you postpone because you had two days.
One of the absolute STUPIDEST things they could have done with that OS.
This isn't a new problem. Every Windows OS back to Windows 98SE has had the exact same issue.
You do know that instead of complaining you can turn that off?
You can't reliably turn it off. I've had plenty of cases over the years where I turned automatic updates off or disabled automatic restart to only have it be re-enabled automatically when the computer is restarted or at some later date when some update is installed. This is one of the many reasons I've pretty much abandoned Windows on everything except my gaming computer.
Don't they have backup systems? Or did those fail too?
