• Rich Student Mugged at gunpoint says he is unable to criticize attackers 'from my perch of privilege
    206 replies, posted
Friedfeld wrote of the encounter 'Last weekend, my housemate and I were mugged at gunpoint while walking home from Dupont Circle. The entire incident lasted under a minute, as I was forced to the floor, handed over my phone and was patted down.' He continued 'And yet, when a reporter asked whether I was surprised that this happened in Georgetown, I immediately answered: "Not at all." It was so clear to me that we live in the most privileged neighborhood within a city [Washington, D.C.] that has historically been, and continues to be, harshly unequal.' Frieden revealed in the op-ed that he did not view the muggers as 'bad people' - and that instead of the various opportunities he'd received in life, wrote that, 'I'd venture to guess that our attackers have had to experience things I've never dreamed of.' 'Who am I to stand from my perch of privilege, surrounded by million-dollar homes and paying for a $60,000 education, to condemn these young men as "thugs?"' he argued. 'It’s precisely this kind of "otherization" that fuels the problem.'
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2849716/Georgetown-University-student-mugged-gunpoint-says-unable-criticize-attackers-perch-privilege.html pretty fly for a white guy
This is proof that a simple title change can totally alter how people view an article.
"I'd venture to guess that our attackers have had to experience things I've never dreamed of." Like getting free money for waving their gun around? Poor, underprivileged muggers...
I mean, I agree with him but damn to say those kind of things after getting held up at gunpoint. That guy has nerves of steel and a heart of gold.
"I'd venture to guess that our attackers have had to experience things I've never dreamed of." Like getting free money for waving their gun around? Poor, underprivileged muggers...
I'm 99% sure he means what caused them to do that? Their situations and previous life experiences compared to his.
Still white guilt. You can't change that swebonny
I've been mugged twice at knifepoint and once at gunpoint. I always felt more sorry for them than anything. If you've never felt the desperation you don't know.
Very typical comments on daily mail
Still white guilt. You can't change that swebonny
What do you want?
Someone tries to mug me or rob me, they better be prepared to kill.
What do you want?
He wants you to find this rich kid and force him to condemn his attackers. Get to it.
What do you want?
he wants you to remove white guilt from the world with your swedish chef magic
Still white guilt. You can't change that swebonny
Because his attackers were obviously not white.

'It’s precisely this kind of "otherization" that fuels the problem.'
"They are not thugs! They just, robbed me at gunpoint and knifepoint... And stole stuff that I bought with my own money... You know, it's a privilege to own these things." I honestly hope he called the police. Because if he didn't because of these morals, he's an overly zealous idiot that's inviting people to mug him.
The events are the same. The article is the same. Only the title is different. What have I done wrong? edit: check ur non-mod privs before criticizing me
nothing
Still white guilt. You can't change that swebonny
Holy shit stop with this crap. The guy quite clearly means "I'm not as poor or disadvantaged as them, I can't know what drove them to mug me". Not "well I'm white so I'll never understand, hail our new black emperors". The guy who was mugged clearly recognises that trying to divide us into "poor" and "not poor", "thug" and "saint", etc. is counter-productive and if anything makes the problem worse. I'm not getting a "white guilt" vibe from this. Just a "I've had it far too good to understand this" vibe.

It's like, cool you learned the meaning of a moral quagmire, but you are a fool for openly stating that you'll write off anyone who mugs you as a matter of privilege.

It's like, cool you learned the meaning of a moral quagmire, but you are a fool for openly stating that you'll write off anyone who mugs you as a matter of privilege.
Where are you getting the whole "wrote off a mugging" from? The guy has said "I can't understand what drives someone to mugging". Not "I won't press charges and totally let a criminal get away". The article doesn't even mention if he followed it up or not, so you're being a collosal tit in assuming that by writing this opinion piece, the guy is just pretending the mugging hasn't happened out of pity or whatever. Stop.

It's like, cool you learned the meaning of a moral quagmire, but you are a fool for openly stating that you'll write off anyone who mugs you as a matter of privilege.
Don't put words in his mouth. All he is saying is to not continue the problem by dehumanizing the perpetrators.
Someone tries to mug me or rob me, they better be prepared to kill.
Then you better prepare to die and/or kill over whatever shit you're carrying.
The guy's entire way of preaching that we shouldn't dehumanize them is on-par with saying, "It's not evil, because I'm clueless about their pain!" and I say screw that. Muggers are thieves, short and simple. My entire family, and several other families have been in bad economic conditions, but we never went out of our way to mug people at gunpoint or knifepoint, and you wanna know why? Because we are not thugs or scumbags. I already stated in a previous post that I hope he filed a police report, and that his moral quagmire did not get in his way, but from the sounds of it, he's writing it off as no big deal which is stupid and ignorant to monetary loss.
The main takeaway from this is that he's aware of the socioeconomic division in DC, and that it's a huge problem that vitally needs to be addressed.
Someone tries to mug me or rob me, they better be prepared to kill.
Are you the guy the Navy Seal copypasta is based on.

Because they're fucking entitled pieces of shit. There is no justification.

Because he's a dunce. Go read some fuckin' zoklet. You'll get a good understanding of how thieves think.
He seems like the guy that would give any homeless guy he sees a hundred dollar bill without thinking twice about it.
This is proof that a simple title change can totally alter how people view an article.
Only really applicable to morons who just read the title without reading and understanding what is being said in the OP/Source
Still thinking he's a pretty humble dude, all things considered.
