• Exclusive: Valve said to be working on 'Steam Box' gaming console with partners, could announce at G

That's a fantastic idea, although I wouldn't buy one because my pc is basically a steam box already. From what I gather, it's like a media pc for use in the living room, but instead of whatever media OS, it runs steam. So a pc. for the living room. That runs steam and plays pc games. I still don't see how it compares to consoles, though, apart from being used in your living room with a tv.
Turbine That should be the name.
you may have seen other consoles, but you have never seen a valve console
So it's a console with better ports of Valve games, fullscreen steam, mouse+keyboard support, probably user made applications. None of that brings any real advantage over a decent PC.
Go Valve!

It's just meant to be used like a media pc/console, hooked up to a tv and controlled with a controller/wireless keyboard+mouse.
The devices will be able to run any standard PC titles, and will also allow for rival gaming services (like EA's Origin) to be loaded up.
I love how Valve is just fucking with them.
Ok I am not getting all that excited. Vox Media was founded just last year and this is the first time I have heard of them. They only started to cover video game stuff in January so I am not that sure anymore.
So they're entering the HTPC market, again kinda pointless with SFF cases and wireless peripherals so widely available.
Well I imagine it's not made for the people that would build their own HTPC. I would assume it's for the not as computer-literate people to be able to enjoy pc gaming on their tv. And it could perhaps provide a minimum spec. for developers to make games for.
As much as I would love to buy it because it's Valve, I see no reason to actually buy it if you have a computer.
I'd get it because I have a shit computer that cant run anything later than 2004.
-snip-
reposting this from the other thread but wouldn't there be almost no point to this? it would have to be running windows in the background if they want the least amount of work on developer's part, but this will probably be more expensive than the "build it yourself" equivalent and will get outdated fast. im just not seeing this one, especially if it is loaded with gimmicks ala wii / wiiu / kinect / move also we REALLY dont need people just taking gifs from the comments on that article and posting them here
Good. One of the few shining stars of the game industry that actually knows what we want and how to go about getting us what we want may finally have its own platform to stand on.
Like I said, Valve aren't stupid, so I'm sure it would be marketed more towards the people that aren't computer-literate enough to build their own htpc's. It'd just be an htpc with a steam interface designed for it, and a certain set of specifications and whatnot. A gaming htpc I suppose. It's also still rumors anyways.
I'm a bit apprehensive about this, i'm just going to sit back and see where this goes before i judge.
I'm a bit apprehensive about this, i'm just going to sit back and see where this goes before i judge.
to be honest at this point it really is just pure rumor. gabe said recently they would make hardware if they REALLY had to.

I think he is talking more future tense in the next gen consoles. They are already in the door for this gen and it is winding down.

I saw a ton of threads on /v/ about this, and now here, still find it hard to believe If they ever release a console they can have my money, all of it.
people need to stop calling this a console. and even then why should we as gamers support yet ANOTHER console, with its own exclusives and shitty ports (to and from it). even then if the RUMORS in the article is true then it seems like it will have to run windows so it really isn't a console.
Now Sega can announce the Dreamcast 2 and a new console generation shall reign.
in order to keep it running you have to fuel it with water so it makes steam that was terrible

I just hope to God Valve knows what they're doing. By going into the console wars and directly competing with the evils of that realm, they run the risk of corrupting themselves...
I'm really confused if this is a console or just Valve Pre-built PC or something.
What a bad choice.
Sounds fake.
This is probably a product targeted at the average "Console gamer", who does not know nor care about the intricacies of constructing a majestic gaming PC. It'll probably be as close to plug and play as you can get, and either come with a Valve-developed controller or a mouse and keyboard. I could also understand something like a wireless keyboard and a nunchuk-style joystick. That actually sounds kind of cool, and helps shatter the barrier between consoles and PCs. I do find it kind of funny, though, how we instantly criticize Razer for stuff like this, but the first time Valve tries it it's met with almost unrelenting applause.
So its essentially a computer that can't do everything a computer can do? Yay?
