• Battleship capsizes; Huge losses
CANNES -- Universal and Hasbro Entertainment's big-budget Battleship barely left port in its North American launch, grossing a dismal $25.3 million. That's well below the anticipated $35 million to $40 million that Universal and director Peter Berg were hoping for. Battleship, designed to put the studio squarely in the tentpole game, cost at least $209 million to produce, excluding a pricey marketing spend. Battleship's international gross of $226.8 million provides some cushion, but it needed a strong domestic performance to end up in the black. A $25.3 million opening means the movie might not clear $70 million or $80 million over the long haul domestically, resulting in a notable loss for Universal and sparking plenty of Monday-morning quarterbacking within the studio about what went wrong. There's already speculation that Battleship, starring Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker and Liam Neeson, will follow the same course as Disney's John Carter, which debuted to $30.2 million in March and topped out at $71.8 million domestically. Overseas, John Carter, also starring Kitsch, earned $200.6 million. The pic resulted in a $200 million write-down for Disney. "It is obviously a disappointment, but we will move on. And we have Memorial Day coming up," Universal president of domestic distribution Nikki Rocco said. "The studio has a picture that already has a quarter of a billion dollars in the bank, and it won't die at $25.3 million domestically. We all know that."
Source: http://movies.yahoo.com/news/box-office-report-battleship-capsizes-25-3-mil-163625819.html?fb_action_ids=303558836396230&fb_action_types=news.reads&fb_ref=type%3Aread%2Cuser%3A-G13ESDHUsxgqkxQt65Ply6IDrM&fb_source=other_multiline&fb_upsell=1 What did they expect when they wanted to make an [del]action movie off of a guessing game for kids[/del] aquatic Transformers spinoff? Could you make a more misleading title?
Being in the Navy I was immediately turned off when I saw Petty Officer Rihanna in our uniform, lol.
Suddenly they blame piracy.
It wasn't really a transformers spinoff It actually was nothing like it at all
The only thing I'm interested in concerning this movie is if they ever say, "You sunk my battleship!"
Being in the Navy I was immediately turned off when I saw Petty Officer Rihanna in our uniform, lol.
Looked cheesy as fuck imo.
Where they went wrong: 1) Fucking. Battleship? 2) Transformers-y ripoff monster aliens. 3) Okay, still, Battleship? 4) You're not kidding, Battleship. oh and, 5) Avengers is still in theaters.
I see what you were trying to do with the title but it's kind of misleading. Might I suggest "Battleship movie capsizes; huge losses"? That way it's still clever but doesn't lure the reader into thinking a real life naval tragedy occurred. [sp]though the fact that the film in question received funding is a tragedy in itself[/sp]
They should've made a movie called Battleship that was about a naval war between the US and Chinese/Iranian navy. That would be less of a slap to the face to the original Battleship game and go quite good with the original theme.
It wasn't really a transformers spinoff It actually was nothing like it at all
Alien robots, slow mo, great CGI, no plot, hot chicks, and explosions? It's basically a transformers movie.
They shouldn't have made a movie called battleship, period. They have been useless for decades upon decades.
They should have just not made a movie based on a board game in the first place.
I'd pay to see Crossfire: The Motion Picture. CROSSFIYAH
can they stop michael bay from making movies now edit appearently he isnt invovled in this. coulda fooled me.
They shouldn't have made a movie called battleship, period. They have been useless for decades upon decades.
Only about 20 years. We stopped using them after the first Gulf War.
Only about 20 years. We stopped using them after the first Gulf War.
We didn't use them in the traditional sense before the First Gulf War. They were just a missile platform, mostly.
Thank god! I was hoping the title meant the Movie ratings and numbers.
I'll tell them what went wrong. They made a Michael Bay film based on the Battleship board game, that's what went wrong.
They should have just not made a movie based on a board game in the first place.
They've made movies on worse things, and really a movie with a plot like what he described could be pretty good.
looks like battleship sunk AT THE BOX OFFICE

well no shit the movie looked terrible, so glad I didn't go see it
I actually saw the movie. Personally, I thought it was pretty great. If you're going to see it to have a sensical plot and realistic actions; you're going with the wrong mindset. But if you're going to see a fun action movie, and one that actually features naval warfare in not just passing reference; then it's awesome. Also, seeing American and Japanese destroyers work together; in support with Australian F-18s, is really cool. Rihanna was still terrible, though.
well no shit the movie looked terrible, so glad I didn't go see it
I sort of want to go see it just to see how god-awful bad it is.
No idea why you would see this rather than saving your dosh for the avengers/dark knight rises/prometheus etc.
sparking plenty of Monday-morning quarterbacking within the studio about what went wrong.
I dunno maybe they could have asked a random bloke off the street about what was wrong with the idea before they sunk 200 million on it
