http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/30/rick-sanchez-calls-obama-_n_699616.html [release]Rick Sanchez referred to Barack Obama as the "cotton picking president" on CNN Monday (h/t Mediaite). Sanchez made the comment in a discussion with CNN correspondent Jessica Yellin on "Rick's List" about the many falsehoods that have been spread about Obama, such as the claim that he is a Muslim or that he is not a citizen of the United States. His voice rising in frustration, Sanchez asked Yellin why people continued to believe the false rumors:
"He is the cotton picking president of the United States! If the president of the United States doesn't have enough of a bully pulpit to convince people that...a lie is a lie...what the hell is going on here?"
After a commercial break, Sanchez immediately apologized. He said that soon after he had used the phrase, people had started contacting him on Twitter, pointing out that he had just used it when referring to a black man -- an insensitive reference, they thought, given the phrase's connections to slavery. "You know I didn't even realize it?" he said. "I was just saying 'cotton picking' because it's a term that I've used because I grew up in the South...however, I apologize for using it, in case it was taken by anyone as an act of disrespect." This isn't the first time people have used--or almost used--the phrase on CNN. Earlier this summer, Newsweek editor Julia Reed said Obama was "out of his cotton-picking mind" on "Anderson Cooper 360." And in 2008, Lou Dobbs almost called then-Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice a "cotton picker."[/release] I'm not quite sure exactly what he meant by it, but that's a fucking retarded thing to say. [editline]5:36PM[/editline] I've realized that he didn't mean it in a bad way at all, it was just the Southern way of saying 'goddamn' nicely. He manned up and apologized immediately for what he said, realizing the possible other meanings. This isn't really a big issue at all.
Picking cotton is what black slaves mostly did, how can you not know that
Because it's a common phrase and he has disconnected Obama so much from black people/slavery that it never occured to him.
Because it's a common phrase and he has disconnected Obama so much from black people/slavery that it never occured to him.
I lived in the South for 8 years, and whenever I heard the phrase "cotton-picker", it was used in a derogatory way towards blacks.
Because it's a common phrase and he has disconnected Obama so much from black people/slavery that it never occured to him.
Pretty much. From the thread title I thought he was directly insulting the president, but with context, it sounds like an honest mistake.
I smell a backfire.
Pretty much. From the thread title I thought he was directly insulting the president, but with context, it sounds like an honest mistake.
Yeah, looking back on it, it sounds more like he was using it as a "safer" way of saying 'goddamn', as in "he's the goddamn President".
yeah the term cotton pickin' is southern slang for "goddamn" or "Mother Fucking", I was very surprised to read this because I never thought rick sanchez would use a racial slur but now I realize its far from it
I agree that cotton picking is a racial slur but I don't think he meant it in that context.
Did he include that he enjoys watermelon and KFC?
People are pretty damn sensitive. It's clear he meant it as in "wait just a cotton-picking minute," as in not a racial slur.
People are pretty damn sensitive. Ive had this happen so much.
It's just the fact that in this day and age, everyone wants to be to politically correct in such an anal-retentive way that if the smallest whiff of any possible controversy is caught, then all of a sudden it's fucking front page news. It's obvious that he didn't mean anything by it, it's just CNN jumped the gun by a mile over his harmless comment. God damn. Oh wait, I guess I shouldn't say that or some Christians will come and force-feed me soap. Then it'll be on my local news at 7.
the term sounds so lighthearted but its origins are apparently deeply rooted in slavery
If someone from Fox said this, facepunch would be all over him calling him a racist, but since he's from CNN, he must've forgotten obama is black or some other insanely stupid reason.
cotton picking is like saying goddamn but in a better way. It's not usualy used in a racial sense. Though in this sense, it may me misconstrued as such

CNN didn't blow it out of proportion. He just happened to check Twitter and saw some people going, "Hey, you might want to think back on what you said." Honestly, when I first read it, I almost thought he was saying something along the lines of Obama being the "Cherry-picking President", as in everyone tries to pick at his faults and attack him for every potentially bad mistake he makes, but the original definition sounds fine.

Not like CNN took him off the air then fired him, jesus.
Why do i have the feeling 4chan is going to troll her ass?

Did not mean that. My bad."
I too have heard it plenty of times in the south as a phrase. He clearly meant "He is the goddamn President" but used a word from his region. And it's not like black people are the only people that ever picked cotton.
Doesn't seem intentional, no big deal.
It's not the Commentator being racist, it's the general public being overtly-PC. In other words, in an attempt to not be racist, people are making this racist. Silly.
It really doesn't sound like it was meant offensively at all. [editline]05:10PM[/editline]
It's not the Commentator being racist, it's the general public being overtly-PC. Well, It depends on the context. If someone was to say " these cotton pickin' cars never work" It's not so bad because its not being used as a racial slur. Now if someone said " fuck off cotton picker" to a black man then THAT would be racist. Which did he use?

He used it in the context of "he's the goddamn president", which is entirely different.
